A lot of work but I'm sure you have left a lot of knowledge with those young minds. Jane O'Connor New Lenox, IL USA From: Janice Blair To: lace Sent: Tue, April 9, 2013 12:14:44 PM Subject: [lace] Lace Talk Yesterday I gave my lace talk in the Textile department of a local large junior college. It was like walking in to room on Project Runway with all the sewing machines around the room and large cutting tables. I was able to set up a slide show of photos of all sorts of laces including contemporary pieces. I spread out a display of my pieces, lots of books, and magazines so there was lots of eye candy for the students. Some of them said they did not know where to look first but the tutor directed them to the slideshow as that was showing on the big screen before I started my talk. I was given 3 1/2 hours but told I could take less time. I was there for over 2 hours. I gave an overview of lace history, talked about lace in fashion, and with the help of a smart desk I was able to show pictures on the big screen and they could see my pillow while I demonstrated making the snake. A smart desk has an overhead camera that projects onto a big screen. About half way through some of the kids started leaving and I thought I must have been too boring, but it turned out they had another class to attend. They did come back later. After my talk, I had the remaining students have a go on a couple of pillows. One student has taught himself to make lace from Gill Dyes book so he was happy to see other books, etc. I turned him loose on my Buckspoint pillow but unfortunately I had taken the wrong Bucks book. The one I had was just patterns, no instructions. Also he had taught himself hands-up method and I do hands down. He was able to manage my spangled Midlands bobbins on my roller pillow. I asked the two tutors present to have a go and I am sure the photos taken of them are probably on Facebook already. I think I got a good reception and after I had packed up, they came back to help haul everything to the car. I had a good day and I hope they did too. [lace] lace talk
Mark "So fun to chat and research about all this :) " This is what I value about arachne. Many people add their little bit to the story, and it soon becomes the large picture. [lace] Lace talk
Hi Spiders, I gave my lecture to day at the women's club. I was amazed how well it went. The ladies kept quiet for a whole hour, were very interested and asked a lot of questions at the end. The talk was this time only about bobbin lace. Some of them were in Bruges and have seen the demos there but most of them had no idea what it was all about. The organizer told me later that she has never seen the group so quiet for such a long time. I told them that I'll be willing to come again and tell them about other type of laces. Mostly people here know what crochet is . Then I went over to the museum to see the curator of the next exhibition. This time it is only women artists.I decided to go this time with my lace on the CDs. Decided that it was a good idea to show also some method of recycling. In the past I made my 2 CDs for the CD 2000 and then added another two when they moved on the US. But during the years a added a few more and now I have a collection of 9 CDs. Curator was delighted. The exhibition will be for a whole month and during Passover which hopefully will bring a lot of visitors into town. Just felt like sharing the news with you, Miriam in Arad where it is still rather chilly. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
