Re: [lace] using multiple threads as gimp

2015-07-28 Thread Maureen
This idea of using multiple threads for gimps has been around for quite a few
years. I was first told about it in the early 80s by Alex Stillwell and indeed
used it in 1985 when I worked a tray cloth and didn't have the appropriate gimp
to hand.

Hi,

About 20 years ago when I first attempted Point Ground my tutor at the
time, Karen Blum, taught us the multi-stranded technique of gimps. She
also taught us how to carry the unwanted threads to the next element via
the gimp strands. It is a very tidy solution to excess threads.

Hello Marianne and everyone

This is an interesting technique that Ulrike outlines. I first encountered
multiple threads as gimp when I tried Chantilly from Lia's book.
Traditional Bayeux and old Tønder also have this kind of gimp. It is handy
for pairs leaving the ground or motif with nowhere to go but join the gimp,
until they are needed again in the design.
You are right, it is also a good way to deal with stops and starts of the
gimp, so that the lace looks nicer.

Like who would ever come up with the idea of using several plies of the
fine thread for the gimp and then splitting it onto 2 bobbins (4 per
pair of gimps), so that you can easier move the gimps around to avoid
having to end and restart them for different parts.
