This idea of using multiple threads for gimps has been around for quite a few years. I was first told about it in the early 80s by Alex Stillwell and indeed used it in 1985 when I worked a tray cloth and didn't have the appropriate gimp to hand. Hi, About 20 years ago when I first attempted Point Ground my tutor at the time, Karen Blum, taught us the multi-stranded technique of gimps. She also taught us how to carry the unwanted threads to the next element via the gimp strands. It is a very tidy solution to excess threads. Hello Marianne and everyone This is an interesting technique that Ulrike outlines. I first encountered multiple threads as gimp when I tried Chantilly from Lia's book. Traditional Bayeux and old Tønder also have this kind of gimp. It is handy for pairs leaving the ground or motif with nowhere to go but join the gimp, until they are needed again in the design. You are right, it is also a good way to deal with stops and starts of the gimp, so that the lace looks nicer.
