RE: [lace] Interesting item on ebay

2006-09-16 Thread Faye Owers
They are used to secure continental bobbins out of the way while working.
You slip the open end under the bobbins and they slide into the gap and then
they are pined upright in the pillow.

They are not really dividers more bobbin holders.

I am sure someone that use them constantly will explain better than me.

Cheers

Dear Jean and all
I have 10 of these dividers, you put them on your pillow so that they stay
up at a soldier, then you can put your bobbin, best danish tønder or english
so that they do not use much space f, ins. when you have 1200 bobbins on
your pillow

Hello Jean

For once an ebay seller does seem to have the description right!

They are used for stacking bobbins in an orderly fashion whilst working
on another section. The photo doesn't show how long the pin sticking
out of the round end is but it should be fairly substantial so that the
divider will stay upright at the side/back of the pillow.

is indeed for lacemaking of some kind.

I think it may be an old writing desk, since the open side is at the hinged end.

The first thing I thought of was the top of an old treadle sewing machine.

"Another intriguing lace item on eBay No 280531829911?"
What is used to hold fields/backgrounds/foundations when motifs/medallions are
applied afterwards (vs. the fields being worked with the motifs)?

I don't see the hinge someone else did, but it is propped or askew, so could
imply such?

The leather lashed half rounds could be removable, so something could be
basted to it while working?

The routed hand grips seem unlike any desk top I have seen, and something
toteable tends to be lighter (thinner) and smaller (circumference).  For
writing, they could have had three ends to keep from sliding off, and wouldn't
the edges have been more squared vs. being rounded?

How many things evolved and were made for an exact task, and sometimes
pre-existing things recycled for another use?

Best,
Susan Reishus

Maybe it shows a mis-spent youth, but the first thing I thought of when I
saw this object was the business bit of a 'shove-ha'penny' board, without

Re: [lace] Interesting item on eBay web site item# 3285954173: Rare LACEMAKER'S OIL LAMP

2004-04-08 Thread Clive and Betty Ann Rice
I bought the same thing from the National Park Service (USA) some years ago for around
$45. Mine also has the exact same "Pontil mark" on the bottom and is the exact same
size as described by the seller. The National Park Service also sells them with a
wick and a metal cover, also described by the seller. She/he apparently got all their
information from the NPS. No amount of persuasion by me could get the Park Service to
change their description or stop selling them as patio lamps, even though they are
described as "18th Century reproduction of a Lacemaker's Lamp." I kept the catalogue
from which I bought the lamp so I am certain of my description.

They are handblown in Jamestown and Williamsburg, Virginia for the NPS.

I can't remember which National Park gift shop I was in last year (FH Clive and I go
to alot of Civil War battlefields managed by the NPS) and they had the lamps in the
gift shop for around the same price, including the wick, if I recall.

Lordy, someone will think they have a rare antique (3 of them??) and pay foolishly for
them.

Betty Ann in Roanoke, Virginia USA

2004-04-08 Thread Paul and Dona Bushong
Hi Betty Ann,
I also have one of these reproductions from NPS at Jamestown, VA, except
that mine has a handle. They are hand blown there at the park and based on
originals that were found in the area. The person I spoke to there admitted
that these probably we not used as the light source, ie; an oil lamp but as
the water globe, hence the hole in the top to add the water. But in order
to sell them, they have added the the metal cover and wick to make them
useful as oil lamps, since not many people have a use for water globes these
days. I certainly didn't pay $100.00. I too chuckled at 3 of the same
"rare" items.
