Security issues change. Just a tip - to be on the safe side for international flights, check with your airline before you go. Their website will have a link about carry-on items. While I was in Europe I had been told you could not bring in or out straw filled pillows, but then we were moving back to Canada at the time. Not many people would bring such heavy pillows on a trip. I don't think it depends entirely upon the airline! It also depends largely on the security restrictions at the airport you are flying from. As I have already posted to MariCarmen off forum, Malvary normally knits on her way to the UK but isn't allowed to knit on the way home. This is nothing to do with Air Canada, but the higher security at the UK airports which will still not allow scissors, nail clippers, tweezers, knitting needles or anything that could possibly be considered to be a weapon (or possably a detonator?). Although you *may* get through, is it worth the risk as your hold luggage is long gone, so you have no choice but for the item to be confiscated. Lately I tend to make wire lace. It needs few pins and is easy to repin so a miniature pillow is enough. So I wrapped a fleece shawl and placed it in a food container, pinned wire lace on it and arranged it as shown on http://www.xs4all.nl/~falkink/lace/hang-EN.html Imagine how all that metal looks on an x-ray image scanner... I had to open up and explain but otherwise no problem. The pillow can actualy be smaller than the pattern. To have a larger working space, I pin a 'skirt' on the pillow. A kind of semi-circular cover cloth padded with undercarpet. There is always something at hand to put as extra padding under the 'skirt', another sjawl, gloves...
