Re: [lace-chat] Hurricane Isabel -- safely past (long)

2003-09-21 Thread Louise Hume
We are OK - only about 4 inches of rain in 4 hours Thursday night and winds
about 40 mph.
I had no power outage, but there was some in the city and adjacent counties
due to trees down on power lines.

The coastal areas of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware
received the full force of the storm which hit them as class 2 hurricane.
All of the barrier islands and beaches were evacuated. There was much wind
damage and storm surge flooding on coast.

DH and I drove down (2 hrs) to Richmond, capital of VA., Sat afternoon to
take my entry to State Fair and most of city and surrounding area was
without power and many without water, as the municipal water system uses
electric pumps. The main streets have been cleared of downed trees, but
still stacked on edges. Traffic lights not working and saw a few fender
benders at intersections. ( We know that the car on the right has the right
of way, but which is the right one when there are cars at all 4 points ?)

There was no power at the fair grounds, but the hard working volunteers were
set up near the front window and door, taking in the entries as usual. (We
had to get a flash light from the car in order to use the toilet)

Washington, DC shut down at noon on Thursday as the Metro (Bus and
underground) closed to avoid high winds over turning buses and trains
getting stalled between underground stations, (as happened in NY City when
they lost power several weeks ago. They probably won't start up until Mon.
There was widespread power loss in area. DD is still without power in VA
suburb.

Across the Blue Ridge Mt. in the Valley of Virginia they had 9 inches of
rain in a few hours. As it has been a wet summer the ground was already
saturated and the runoff caused serious flooding. More flooding is
expected in the next few days down river as the water makes its way out to
the sea.

This storm started as class 5 hurricane, but weakened as approached land.
Most Atlantic storms move up the coast and swipe the edge of land and then
follow the gulf stream out to sea. This one hit head on and moved inland,
ending up in Ontario, Canada. This is equivalent to the distance from
southern Spain to Scotland ! So many more areas were affected than is
usual. Fortunately, there were relatively few deaths, (about 23, I think,
overall,) considering the amount of physical damage.
Florida, which is frquently in the path of hurricanes, was spared this one.

So we have survived another storm. We had good warning for this one and were
able to prepare. It is a good idea to have an emergency kit supplied at
all times, as stores sell out of batteries, propane gas canisters, lamp oil
, and even candles in days before predicted storms. I couldn't find propane
for camp stove we haven't used for over 10 yrs, so just laid a fire in
fireplace. Didn't lose power, but have cooked over grate fire many times,
so wasn't worried.

DH has phoned BT because of the problems we have to be told they are
awash with viruses. I have had six messages saying that my messages
could not be sent, as I had not sent any messages I knew something
was wrong. DH has had many more of the same messages.

Jean and the spiders,

Last week I was sending emails direct from aol (rather than from my account
by via the web) - and I kept being told that my email was taking too long to
send.

Suddenly this just stopped

I was led to believe that there was too much traffic at that one time, so now
I tend to go on line when it's more quite - it also stops mum and dad moaning
about me being on the phone all evening.

Regards

Liz

[lace-chat] secret pal

2003-09-21 Thread nicky.h-townsend
A huge thank you to my Secret Pal,
What a wonderful surprise parcel. The calendar and the souvenir book of Las
Vegas are very special and are a really lovely reminder of the nice side of
our stay in Las Vegas. It is an amazing place. My son enjoyed the lollipop -
we'ed not seen one quite like it before, needless to say it didn't last
long.
I just love the writing set, itis such a pretty design - shall use it
tonight to write to my cousin who I have recently discovered and will meet
for the first time in about two weeks time. As for the really cute squirel -
well he is hanging onto the side of a plant pot in my lounge so I can keep
an eye on him, we know what mischief they can get up to after our trip to
Yosemite.

Hope that you all had a wonderful time at your daughters wedding. I'm really
looking forward to next months revelations! Thank you for being such a
special secret pal.

[lace-chat] Battle of Britain Lace Panel

2003-09-21 Thread nicky.h-townsend
Hi spiders
It has been a very hectic week or so. Alice, I haven't forgotten about doing
a write up about the trip to America - it really has been hectic - son
getting married, daughter moved to Leicester, husband demolishing our
cloakroom, teaching, helping with the organising of our lace day yesterday
(Saturday with Veronica Main which was hectic but a good day) and a few
other matters to boot including the exhibition of the Battle of Britain Lace
Panel at The Forum, Norwich, (Norfolk, England) all last week.

It was a fantastic week, beginning with the RAF Central Band and a Guard of
Honour from RAF Coltishall parading outside City Hall in Norwich, there was
then a flypast by a spitfire over the city before the parade made its way
escorting the Lord Mayor of Norwich to The Forum, the Colours were presented
and the Mayor unveiled the Lace Panel. Reg Sheppard then gave a talk on the
history of the Battle of Britain and the lace panel.

Reg did a magnificent job of displaying the lace panel. Two thousand
exhibition brochures were printed and these had gone in two and a bit days,
a further 1500 were produced overnight! Reg was overwhelmed at the response
of the various lace groups/guilds who contributed to his appeal to help fund
the exhibition. He told me that had it not been for the response of the
lacemakers the exhibition would probably have not been able to go ahead -
and asked me to pass on thanks to all those who responded. It was a very
emotional time for him a dream come true, (by the way Reg is fine, he was
kept in hospital overnight as a precaution, but was back Wednesday giving
his talk twice a day). Thank you lacemakers.

Several thousand visited the exhibition during the course of the week, many
were lacemakers, and many came out of curiosity having seen publicity about
it in local press etc -everyone thought it stunningly beautiful.

The lace panel is absolutely exquisite, quite breathtaking. I have never
seen machine lace of such superb quality. There were also press photos taken
during the bombing on display, and it was these photos that Harry Cross used
for designing many of the sections of the panel. I particularly loved the
image of Bow Church which has the reflection of St Paul's Cathedral in its
window.

It was lovely to meet Jean, the owner of the panel, she inherited it from
her father John Sloman, who had been behind the panels tour of Britain back
in 1946-48, when Reg Sheppard accompanied it around the country. Bill Rowe
(who has written a book about it called The Battle of Britain in Lace)and
his wife, Evelyn also travelled up to Norfolk for the week and it was great
meeting them as Bill has helped me with information about the panels that I
have used for various articles that I've written and am about to write!). We
enjoyed lunch on the Monday with Jacqui Barber - Chairman of the Lace Guild
who came up for the day, and it was great to talk to the various lacemakers
who came Carole Morris and friends from Burwell lacemakers, Audrey from
Littleport Lacemakers, Sheringham Lacemakers, Norfolk Lacemakers, Suffolk
Lacemakers etc etc (excuse me for any I've missed).

I was also able to get some really fantastic photos of the panel with the
digital camera I bought in America - I got an album put together Friday
night so that it could go on display at our lace day on Saturday and I hope
to add a page on Suffolk Lacemakers web site in the near future (have a few
gremlins to sort out on that thanks to that nice bug that did the rounds a
few weeks ago).

If you get a chance to see the panel do, photos just don't do it justice. It
is beautiful.

Nicky

in a lovely autumnal but sunny Suffolk, where I hope to touch ground
soonOr I shall be in need of another holiday - dream on.
