[lace-chat] :) Fwd: The trip to Rome

2004-04-01 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
Not a *new* one -- not even to my imperfect memory -- but a "goodie",
nevertheless, and not recently re-hashed; I think it dates to the time
when the US dollar was still alive and kicking (before '01), and
travelling to Europe was possible without getting oneself in hock
forever... This month's Consumer Reports came today and DH -- spotting
an article on "travelling abroad, managing money" thought it would be
of interest to me, since I'm planning to go to Prague and Poland this
summer.

Well, I read it (he didn't), and the advice, in general, was: "don't go
to Europe; stick to the areas where the dollar is still strong: South
America (except Brazil) or Asia (except Hong Kong). But, given the gas
(and, consequently, the *flights*) prices, your best bet is Mexico, as
you can reach it by car". Muy gracias de nada :) Even Canada -- which,
like Mexico, can easily be reached by car -- was on the "not-advised"
list...

From: T.H.
A New York woman was at her East Side hairdresser’s getting her hair
styled prior to a trip to Rome with her boyfriend. She mentioned the
trip to the hairdresser who responded, "Why would anyone want to go to
Rome? It’s crowded and dirty and, worse yet, full of Italians. You’re
crazy to go to Rome". But a few minutes later, "So how are you getting
there?"

"We’re flying Continental," was the reply. We got a good rate."

"Continental," exclaimed the hairdresser, "that’s a terrible airline.
Their planes are old. Their flight attendants are ugly and they’re
always late." And again, a few minutes later, "So, where are you
staying in Rome?", asked the hairdresser.

"We’ll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome’s left side
called Teste"

"Don’t go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks it’s gonna
be something special and exclusive but it’s really a dump - the worst
hotel in the whole city! The rooms are small, the service is surly and
they’re way overpriced." And yet again : "So, whatcha doing when you
get there?"

"We’re going to go to see the Vatican and we are hoping to see the
Pope."

"That’s rich," laughed the hairdresser, "you and a million other people
trying to see him. He’ll look the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on
this lousy trip of yours. You’re sure going to need it."

A month later, the woman, all smiling, came in for her hair
appointment. The hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome.

"It was absolutely wonderful," explained the woman, "not only did we
arrive on time in one of Continental’s brand new jets but it was
overbooked and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were
wonderful and I had a handsome 28-year old steward who waited on me
hand and foot."

"And the hotel - it was fabulous! They’d just finished a $5 million
remodeling job and now it’s just a jewel, the finest hotel in the city.
They too, were overbooked so they apologized and gave us their owner’s
suite at no extra charge"

"Well", muttered the hairdresser, "I know you didn’t get to see the
Pope".

"Actually, we were quite lucky because as we toured the Vatican, a
Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder and explained that the Pope likes
to personally meet some of the visitors and if I’d be so kind to step
into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally greet me.
Sure enough, five minutes later, the Holy Father walked through the
door and shook my hand. I knelt down and he spoke a few words to me."

"Really?" asked the hairdresser, her mouth hanging open, scissors
forgotten, "What’d he say?"

He asked, "Where did you get that crappy hairdo?"

My technology hadn't caught up with your technology... :( My Mozilla
said she (I think of it as "she", because it has a dragon for a logo,
and because the name ends in -a; a clear indicator -- in Polish -- of a
feminine noun or name) didn't know what to do with the URL; apparently,
the .exe bit bothered her...

OTOH, I expect I know what my home looks like from a satellite: a
speck, not worth all the money we're paying the taxes on

People see museums buying paintings for millions (because those sales make
the headlines), and assume that sky's the limit. While -- and Devon will
correct me if I'm wrong -- probably most of the museums' collections are
based on gifts, with pieces bought only to "round off" a particular
collection. So, a "museum quality" piece ought to be free :)
BWWWHAHAH

Your logic is impeccable - I like it! :->

If you can't be a good example, you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

[lace-chat] Dorothy bag

2004-04-01 Thread Jean Nathan
I've always understood a dorothy bag to be either a simple bag made by
putting a drawstring around a circle of fabric, an inch or so from the top,
then tightening the drawstring so you get a pouch with a frill around the
top edge and the draw string loops for handles, or a more sophisticated
drum-shaped bag but still with a draw string and frill at the top.

If you do a google, you'll find other bag shapes called dorothy bags, but
they all have a gathered top.
