[lace-chat] Mirror Mirror......

2005-05-01 Thread Maxine D
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Do you have to tell it all?

Where do you get the glaring light
To make my clothes look just too tight?

I think I'm fine but I can see
you won't cooperate with me;

The way you let the shadows play
You'd think my hair was getting gray.

What's that, you say? A double chin?
No, that's the way the light comes in;

If you persist in peering so
You'll confiscate my facial glow,

And then if you're not hanging straight
You'll tell me next I'm gaining weight;

I'm really quite upset with you
For giving this distorted view;

I hate you being smug and wise ~
O, look what's happened to my thighs!

I warn you now, O mirrored wall,
Since we're not on speaking terms at all,

If I look like this in my new jeans,
You'll find yourself in smithereens.

Nothing is so strong as gentleness. Nothing as gentle as real strength.

[lace-chat] Re: Getting sticky-label gunge off melamine

2005-05-01 Thread Ann McClean
My sincere thanks to everyone who replied to my original query:-
"Advice, please, on how to remove the residue from sticky labels
from a pair of melamine salt & pepper shakers. The paper has
soaked away, but the sticky gunge left behind is proving stubborn :("
The problem is now solved - I used Lynn's idea of baby oil, and it
worked a treat - BUT am keeping all the other suggestions for
future reference :)

[lace-chat] Lace 'At Home' - Essex/Suffolk, UK

2005-05-01 Thread sealacehaven
I have been asked to post this message openly in reply as was the original
message.

Carol - in Suffolk UK.
As the editor of Suffolk Lacemakers newsletter I would just like to point
out that I am unable to include details of any event of which I have no
knowledge. I am always requesting information about events to include in the
SLM newsletter, because we endeavour to keep our members informed of such
things.

You know me, you have my address, you have sent copy to me before, you are
a member of SLM and so receive a copy of our newsletter and know when it is
published. It is up to you to let me know of your events in writing as is
normal procedure.

Your implication that I did not include your event in our newsletter is
verging on slander which I do not take kindly to.

Subject: [lace-chat] Lace 'At Home' - Essex/Suffolk, UK
Hi All,
A great day was had yesterday! I hosted an 'At Home' Lacemaking Day - it
was
advertised in Essex Lace Makers newsletter, but unfortunately not
advertised
in the Suffolk Lace Makers Newsletter, so we had a lounge full of mainly
Essex
ladies - and my students - making lace, with a lot of gossip, and the new
faces quickly became good friends!

But - because we only had the Essex contingent this time, several there
thought it would be a good idea to make sure that it was advertised a
little
more widely, so if anyone is in the UK, in the Suffolk area, between
Ipswich
and Colchester - or within reach of there - on June 22nd, get in touch
with
me, and I'll let you have directions to find the house. Although we live
in
a very small village (one general shop, a part-time post office, but
umpteen
pubs!) we are easy to reach as the A12 goes right beside the village.
We
met at about 10.30 am, and the last person left about 4.15 pm - they all
brought their lunches, and those who had pillow stands brought them too.
Coffee, tea and cakes were provided, my husband was banished to the study
and
the small upstairs TV room for the day - and it really was most enjoyable.

The idea of the 'At Home' was, I think, formed over twenty-five years
ago - it
was going strong when I joined Essex Lace Makers about 1978, with ladies
coming from all over the county - as well as Suffolk and a couple from
Norfolk, if I remember rightly! - for a day making lace, so I was pleased
to
be able to revive these days. So - if anyone can manage to get to us, do
let
me know and I'll give you directions - we all enjoyed the day, and it
would be
nice to meet other local lace-makers, in a more relaxed setting, where we
can
make lace, chat, and get to know each other.

Re: [lace-chat] Lace 'At Home' - Essex/Suffolk, UK

2005-05-01 Thread Carol Adkinson
Brian,

I didn't make any accusations as to why it wasn't published in Suffolk - I
thought the succeeding paragraph exlained that when I started in Essex Lace,
the system was already going strong, and wished to revive it. It proved to
be popular, and so it was decided, by those who came, that it should perhaps
be widened, which prompted the account to Arachne. And maybe you will find
a similar message to the one in Essex Lace Makers newsletter, re putting the
advert in the Suffolk newsletter - I can't be held responsible for the
vagaries of the ether - as you say, other things have been put in the
Newsletter which I have sent via eMail, and maybe the message sent to you
last Wednesday is sitting there still! Or maybe not - these things happen
to the eMails sometimes, in my experience anyway - but perhaps I have just
been unlucky at times!

I am sorry you feel aggrieved - to repeat, I was hoping to revive a practise
in Essex Lace Makers about twenty-five years ago. The ladies who attended
last Wednesday seemed to enjoy the day, and so the idea was to widen the
circle slightly, hence the Arachne message, and the eMail to your good self.
I have to say, I have read my original message below, and feel that the
second paragraph explains the reason that it was mainly Essex ladies there,
as well as my class members - perhaps if you read it more carefully, you
would agree.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: blonde male

2005-05-01 Thread Tamara P Duvall
While I do not think one has to be a blonde to be stupid and vice-versa
(I used to have more grey-cells than the current two, when I was *was*
a blonde), I admit to certain... Disaffection? Ennui? with the
dim-witted blond *female* paradigm, so a dim-witted blond *male* makes
a bit of a change. Still... The old Polish dim-witted *cop* jokes beat
all the blonde ones by a mile, IMO :)

From: A.N.
A blonde guy gets home early from work and hears strange noises coming
from the bedroom. He rushes upstairs to find his wife naked on the bed,
sweating and panting.

"What's up?" he says. "I'm having a heart attack," cries the woman. He
rushes downstairs to grab the phone, but just as he's dialing, his
4-year-old son comes up and says "Daddy! Daddy! Uncle Ted's hiding in
your closet and he's got no clothes on!"

The guy slams the phone down and storms upstairs into the bedroom, past
his screaming wife, and rips open the wardrobe door.
Sure enough, there is his brother, totally naked, cowering on the
closet floor.

"You rotten SOB," says the husband, "my wife's having a heart attack
and you're running around naked scaring the kids!"

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: Another Blonde Joke

2005-05-01 Thread Tamara P Duvall
OK, so I don't like blonde=dummy jokes all that much... But, when it's
*funny*, I can't resist it :)

From: L.F.
My wife, who is blonde, came running up to me in the  driveway,
the other day, just jumping for joy! I didn't know why she was jumping
for joy but I thought, what the heck and I starting jumping up and
down along with her.

When she said, "Honey, I have some really great news for you!"
I said, "Great. Tell me what you're so happy about."
She stopped jumping and was breathing heavily from all the jumping
up and  down,  when she told me that she was pregnant!

I was ecstatic!
We had been trying for a while, so I grabbed her and kissed her on
the lips and told her, "That's great! I couldn't be happier!"

Then, she said "Oh, honey, there's  more."
"I  asked, "What do you mean 'more'?"
She said, "Well, we are not having just one baby. We are going to
have TWINS!"

Amazed at how she could know so soon after getting pregnant, I asked
her how she knew.

She said, "Well, that was the easy part. I went to Wal-Mart and bought
the
twin-pack home pregnancy test kit and both tests came out positive!"
