Now that I am up off the floor, I can write to Thank You Jeanette for truly
making my day worth while!! Like you, Sue, I also have UC and learning to live
with that is not easy. How do you explain that to your friends?

 David,
bless you. We all have to make the best of what we were given to deal with in
our life and you seem to do quite well. My great niece had a male instructor
for dance who was gay and when they went on tour, no one in the family was
concerned as she was as safe as she could ever be in his company!!!

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] Bangles

2010-06-24 Thread Jane O'Connor
>Use plastic bangles?<

Ruth, I don't see why plastic bangles could not be
used --- however, be sure the size/thickness of the  bangle is suitable for
the lacing. The metal ones are quite thin so it is easy to get the crochet
hook under them to grab the thread. The plastic ones I've seen here are quite
thick. You can try it and see what you think. Let the rest of us know how it
goes. Oh, and be sure to add more inches of thread to your bobbins if using
thicker bangles as the sewings around them take up a lot of the thread.

[lace-chat] Bangles

2010-06-24 Thread Jane O'Connor
All of you making bangle ornaments - beware that the bangles may tarnish,
discolor or rust in a short time. I've been very disappointed with seeing this
on bangle ornaments I made just a few years ago so now I cover all the new
bangles with clear nail polish before using them. Just brush on the nail
polish on one side, let dry, then do the other side. You cannot see that it
has polish on them but it does help preserve the bangle. I have no idea what
the polish does to the lace threads as far as acidity but I feel more
comfortable giving these ornaments away knowing the metal won't look ugly in
the future.

Re: [lace-chat] Pumpkin recipes

2008-09-24 Thread Jane O'Connor

That looks like a lot of oil Jane.

Yes, it does but it makes a
large pan. I've made it many, many times and it turns out just fine. Over the
weekend, I made a bundt cake and that also called for 1 cup of oil. I
hesitated also but the cake is delicious, turned out just fine. Sometimes when
recipes call for what seems to be too much oil, you can substitute half of
that amount with applesauce. I haven't tried that with this recipe however. If
you try it, let me know how it turns out.

[lace-chat] Pumpkin recipes

2008-09-24 Thread Jane O'Connor
Here's one for the sweet tooth.

Pumpkin Bars

4 well beaten eggs
1 cup
vegetable oil
2 cups sugar
1 cup pumpkin, cooked
2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon
salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup chopped nuts [walunts
or pecans]

Combine all ingredients and pour in greased jelly roll pan. Bake
350 degrees, 20 to 25 minutes. While still warm, frost with cream cheese
frosting, top with nuts.

Cream Cheese Frosting
1/2 box of powdered sugar
1/2
stick margarine
4 ounces of cream cheese
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Mix all
ingredients well.

For a faster frosting, you can purchase a can of cream
cheese frosting in the bakery aisle at the grocers.

[lace-chat] Moravia starch

2008-01-09 Thread Jane O'Connor
Dear Spiders,

There just might be a cause for my unhappiness with the bottle of starch I
have and want to know if any of you might have experienced a change in the
quality of your starch with temperature changes. This bottle accompanied me to
the desert where it did get very hot for a number of days while we were
traveling. Could this heat, then cooling cycle for 6 weeks have done in my
starch?

2008-01-08 Thread Jane O'Connor
Hi Bev,

Thanks for the help on Moravia starch source, everyone. I hate to say this,
but trillium has the very same starch I did purchase earlier this year and it
is like water. Same bottle, etc. Truly. It gave my Christmas ornaments a bit of
body but it sure didn't stiffen them very well. It is like if the air got very
humid, they'd be limp as a dishrag. I didn't even put the one part water to the
starch finally and it still wasn't all that stiff. Perhaps I'm asking too much
of starch or this bottle isn't quite up to snuff.

I would like to know if Mayra's Lace Threads is still in business. She is out

starch. There isn't a starch comparable that I have found yet and really would
like to find a source for it without having to resort to ordering from over the

[lace-chat] postage

2007-11-30 Thread Jane O'Connor
This is late getting to chat for the topic, but I just visited a web site in
Colorado, USA and this was their shipping information for Canada and overseas
postage rates. the container does make a difference but also finding out the
rates jumped in cost last Spring.

""the shopping cart will charge you USA shipping rates. Your package will be
mailed International Priority Mail. International rates increased dramatically
May 15, 2007. If your order can fit in a 9.5" X 12.5" envelope, the rates are
$9.00 for Canada/Mexico and $11.00 for Other Countries. If your order has to go
in a box, rates are likely going to be at least
  $20.00.""

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] silk thread/yarn

2007-07-22 Thread Jane O'Connor
Just one correction: Village Spinning and Weaving is in Solvang, in
central Santa Barbara County (about 2.5 hours NW of where I live in NW
Los Angeles). Weaver's Cottage is east of Newhall/Valencia/Santa
Clarita/Saugus, in eastern Los Angeles County (about 1.5 hours E of
where I live).

Both are really great places, but the Cottage is in the boondocks on
the edge of the desert and is the one that is only open a couple of
days a week. The shop is a house, full of funky and wonderful stuff
piled everywhere.

Both places have fibers and equipment for spinning, weaving, knitting,
crochet, dying, and whatnot. Weaver's Cottage does not have bobbin
lace or tatting supplies, but Village Spinning and Weaving does.

.
Thanks for the correction, Robin. I thought later I might have gotten those
confused but wasn't sure.

[lace-chat] silk thread/yarn

2007-07-20 Thread Jane O'Connor
Whoaho!! This search for tussah silk 20/2 has been a delightful time - after
the weeks of pure frustration! Here is a list of what I have found for all you
who are anxious to know.

www.aururasilk.com - out of Portland, Oregon has hand spun & machine silk,
dyeing is extra cost

www.treenwaysilks.com out of BC, Canada 1-888-383-7455 has the silk

www.habutextiles.com/webfile/yarnstorefront.html out of New York, New York
212.239.3546 has silk

For any kind of yarn or crochet thread you can think of try
www.weaverscottage.com out of Solvang, CA - U.S. only - 888-686-1192 (they
have the bamboo yarn) Only open Thursday, Friday and Sat. Pacific Coast time

Best of All - tada. is www.redfishdyeworks.com out of Acton, CA U.S.
only - 800-916-0353 All her yarns are hand dyed silk with choices of type.
Price per skein is very reasonable compared to the others. She is currently out
of town doing a show in Durango, CO till next Thursday so call her after that.
Word of mouth is that they are the loveliest silk and most gorgeous colors.

For interesting Pearle Cottons try www.villagespinweave.com under weaving
yarns. Good prices. Also have bamboo yarn.

Have fun and enjoy as I intend to do. Again, thanks to all who have helped in
this search.

You spiders are excellent with information!!
A question about finding tussah silk has resulted in many answers and
suggestions. Thank you one and all!! Treenway silks in Canada seems to be the
favorite, however, another possible U.S. place was given me. They are only open
3 days a week so until they are open, I cannot tell you if it will be a place
to go to. Once I get all the info, I will post it on arachne for all the others
who seem to be searching for the silk too.

  Many thanks spiders!!

[lace-chat] Find a thread/yarn

2007-07-16 Thread Jane O'Connor
Dear Spiders,

Can anyone in the U.S. help me find tussah silk 20/2 in colors from a place
that would mail order to me? I have exhausted Google and various knitting web
sites. They either have it for spinners or not in colors. I know it can be
ordered from Germany but with the exchange rate, shipping costs plus the time
it takes for the ship to cross the big pond, I would be better off getting it
here in the U.S. or so I thought. However, it seems next to impossible to
find. If it just isn't available here, is there an adequate alternative that
can be had in the U.S.?

You can contact me privately and many, many thanks.
