[lace-chat] the President's condolences

2005-07-09 Thread mmouzon
I know this is a day late, but unless I'm terribly mistaken, the speech
begins with the President's condolences.

[lace-chat] not your typical Sunday morning!

2005-05-02 Thread mmouzon
from [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This makes two! The first time was last year when my son casually
mentioned that there was an alligator resting at the lake near his
campus. Not long after that, he needed work done on his car, and I had
to take him to class and go drop off his car. Having forgotten all
about the gator, I was surprised when he pointed it out to me. I only
saw it once more after that. They probably relocated him. He was small
and was causing quite a traffic problem as other people started noticing
him and slowing down as they drove by. The lake he was staying at is on
a 4 lane highway!!

You would think that I would be ready for it to happen again, but
yesterday really caught me off guard. My husband and I were on our way
to church and this time the gator was on our own street!! About a mile
from our house!! And it wasn't small. This gator was 9 feet long!!
When we saw it, the police had already spotted it and put in a call for
help; for someone to come and take it away.

I think we'll pass on having any outdoor pets for awhile.

You can see the latest gator at

[lace-chat] Armenians

2005-03-15 Thread mmouzon
> (Karen wrote) Hitler had learnt however that noone remembered the
Armenians. Now if this had come up last week, I would have no idea.
This week, I have been watching 1914-18 with my son, and I have learnt
so much about WW1.
> (Tamara wrote) we sort-of knew what the Turks did to the Armenians
during WWI

This morning, I was skimming the chat-digest, and came across the emails
about the Armenians. I walked away from the computer for a minute
because my son was getting ready to leave and I wanted to spend those
few minutes with him. We were talking about all kinds of things, when
he mentioned a friend of his at school (they both tutor) and how much
fun this person is. He was talking about things this young man had said
about his family background (his father fled to the US as the result of
a massacre in their homeland in the 1980's), and my son was trying to
remember what his background was. I said, "Armenian?"

I was right.

(Always the student, I did a google search after he left.)

[lace-chat] Mayberry towns

2005-02-03 Thread mmouzon
It is interesting to hear how and where we all live. I am seeing my
hometown in a new light this week since we are the host city for the
29th Super Bowl game (the American football championship). The sports
press and athletes seem to have found a new activity called
“Jacksonville bashing”. Some of it started before they even arrived in
town! It’s interesting to hear things about your city from someone
else’s perspective. It’s also sad! I love my hometown. Sure it has
it’s faults, but those of us who live here have grown used to them and
see them as the crazy little quirks that make it what it is.
Mayberry? If there is a town with 1,000,000 population that can be a
Mayberry, then this is it! We are a Florida town, but we love our
country roots and yes we are on the ocean, but the original settlers
first decided against ocean front property to make their home on the
river 15 miles inland. We have a character that is more than a little
hokey (as evidenced in slogans, restaurant names, hometown news), but it
is what makes us who we are. We have lots of urban sprawl, but then we
are the largest land area city in the US. Lots of room for more
neighbors to move here. Lots of traffic, of course, but it just means
you have more time to listen to the great radio stations in town! And
lots of traffic has a way of forcing you to slow down your lifestyle
just a bit. There are churches on just about every corner and come
Sunday their parking lots are full! It’s in Florida, but close enough
to Georgia to resemble coastal southern cities more than your typical
ocean view resort. Our river is one of two that runs north instead of
south; and it’s many tributaries run all through the city...waterfront
property abounds! It gets cold here! It has even been known to snow!
Where I buy my groceries, there is a bowl of peppermints at the check
out, and the cashier calls me “honey”. I like it like that and I don’t
want it to ever change.
The sports writers who are here now as our guests will be treated with
that wonderful thing known as southern hospitality, even while being
critical of the very things that make us hospitable! If they gave it a
little more thought, they might change their base of operations and
settle down here and learn to call it “home” – with every meaning that
the word conjures up!

Debbie in Florida – and loving every minute of it!!

[lace-chat] if only I could have said this...

2004-12-31 Thread mmouzon
Some people have such a way with words that as you read their writings,
you feel like you are conversing with an old friend. Peggy Noonan is
that kind of writer. I have read her articles for years now, and each
time I feel richer because of it. Her piece on our present disaster is
no exception. It's one of those things that you read and say, I wish I
had said that!

Let me warn you, a registration may be required. These days she writes
columns for the Wall Street Journal. It's been so long since I started
reading her column that I don't remember. If you would like, email me
and I will send you the piece. There is a link on the page for emailing
the article to others, but the article is too long to post here.
The link I am listing here is her archives, the column I am referring to
is "Disturbances in the Earth"
http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/archive/

As on 9/11, I do not have anyone in my close circle of family or friends
who was involved in this event, but still I feel personally affected by
it. Perhaps it is because we all are.

[lace-chat] Enjoy!

Joy-
I loved your response to the question...
>(Do American waiters really say "Enjoy" as they

It took me awhile to “get it” though...I scrolled on down through my
chat digest and suddenly it hit me...
“enjoy” meant “in Joy” :-)

[lace-chat] draft legislation

2004-09-25 Thread mmouzon
I got the impression this draft email is just a hoax...or maybe it began
with some misunderstanding.
E-mail hoaxes run in abundance these days it appears.
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/d/draft.htm
I didn't respond right away because I thought most people already knew
about these house bills...they were introduced over 18 months ago and
have been buried in committee since!
I did not give this mass email much credence since the two bills were
introduced by Democrats... hardly the partners you would suspect for a
trick by this administration to sneak draft legislation into law. Also,
it amends automatically the present draft legislation by introducing
women into the draft.
Anyway, before it can become reality, the President has to request it,
and then it must be approved by Congress. If you decide that you need
to write your congressman or senator, please check out the Thomas web
site
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:HR00163:@@@P
and look at the names of the congressmen who sponsored or cosponsored
this bill.
As far as not hearing about it before the election, people may say that
you won't, but so far, I know of two politicians who have discussed it
in their speeches, so I'm sure it will be well discussed.
If you are alarmed by it, do take action and write those senators and
congressmen who stand behind it and let them know of your opposition!

[lace-chat] enjoying the "list"

2004-09-13 Thread mmouzon
I am so glad to have this lace chat list! It has been a great place to
retreat lately. I think everyone needs distractions at one time or
another in their lives, and this list is just such a place to “get
away”. I love reading everything people write about. The poem about
grandma is cute, and the quote from David about family history was one
that I will copy and keep.
The distraction is greatly appreciated because we are just under a lot
of stress down here in Florida these days. After four major storms in
one summer, if there is one thing that I am an expert on... it is how to
prepare for a hurricane! The forecasts seem to include everyone at one
point or another, so tensions are on hold as we all wait to see where a
storm will make landfall, and how it will impact areas around it. You
begin to wonder if you will need to evacuate, and what you will take if
you do. After a while, it all works together to begin to wear you down.
When Ivan showed up on the scene, and the evacuations started again down
south, I could already sense the frustration setting in up here. Most of
my neighbors have not taken down the wood from Frances...which was only
put up on their windows because they went through effects from Charley
without any wood on the windows. There was a rumor going around Friday
that gasoline was going to be rationed. Just a rumor, but people at
first were lining up 3-5 deep at the gas stations. Things calmed down
the next day. I think keeping a sense of calm is one of the hardest
things facing those of us in Florida right now. It doesn’t matter
whether you will be in the path of the storm or not. Even when you find
out your area will be spared the worst, you hurt for the ones who will
not be spared. It has been a tense month and a half.
I have never watched the weather channel as often as I have lately, but
they have been very helpful in keeping everyone informed, and it amazes
me how brave these pilots are who fly right into the storm!
I have really enjoyed reading my Bible, especially the Psalms. I read
things there that seem to say exactly how I feel, and then take my
feelings right on up to God. There is great peace available there to
anyone who asks.
We have spent more time with our neighbors...even helping each other cut
up the trees that have fallen, etc.
It is a summer we will not soon forget.
Thanks!
Debbie ... in Florida (and still loving this place!)
