9 Where are Chinese gooseberries from? New Zealand Nup, wrong on that one, sorry. Chinese Gooseberries originally came from China. They were a very small, hairy and somewhat tart fruit until the New Zealand orchardists developed them into what they are today, and then marketed them as Kiwi Fruit, then decided that Zespri was a more appealling name. Go figure the last one!, Bbut there is a history lesson for you in a hairy skin :-)
