When I first encountered an "afghan" - 1973, shortly after arriving here - I didn't know what to make of it. It was a bit like a "blanket". But it was also a bit like some "counterpanes" (the ones made from leftover pieces of fabric. I think they're called "crazy quilts" here)... And, of course, I was unable to think of either as a "quilt" which, to me, is what's called a "comforter" in the US.
