Last year DH got told to produce his documents at the police station and was
only given 3 days to do so; I don't know if the time limit varies. I
thought it was a bit of a cheek, as the reason the police were talking to
him was that a hit and run driver had hit the side of our car while it was
stationary, so there was no way that DH was to blame.

[lace-chat] Reply from Ford

2005-01-29 Thread Jean Nathan
I received a reply from Ford Central Office this morning. They don't deny
that keys cost only a few pence to produce, but say it's up to the
dealership what they charge for the keys and for their activation. They will
continue to provide one set of keys only with a new car, but "have put on
file for consideration at relevant meetings" my suggestion that instructions
should be detailed numbered steps able to be followed by a chimpanzee rather
than a descriptive paragraph and agree that the instructions for activating
keys aren't totally clear. They have "also noted" my suggestion to provide a
list of accessories available with each model with current prices "although
these might vary between dealerships and change with time".

At least they bothered to reply.

On Lace the subject of thieves obtaining keys by reading the vehicle VIN
number from the dashboard was raised. Doesn't apply to the UK. Although we
need the VIN and the registration document to get new keys for modern cars,
the VIN is usually situated somewhere inside the engine compartment, and the
bonnet on mine can only be opened from inside the car, so they'd need keys
to get into the car to open the bonnet to get the VIN to get keys. If you
leave you're registration document in your car, your insurance is invalid.
If the police need to see the vehicle registration document, insurance
certificate or your driving license, you can produce them within a certain
number of days (I think 14 days) at the nearest police station, so there's
no need to carry any of those with you. I do carry my driving license, but
only my insurance company name and address and insurance certificate number
in case I have an accident - makes it simpler to have at least those details
with you. The insurance documents and vehicle registration documents are
locked up at home.
