[lace-chat] parking cars

2004-02-24 Thread nicky.h-townsend
Reading Ruth's account of parking her new car reminded me of when my car had
to go to the garage for repair. I'd got an important meeting to attend in
Norwich, but no means of getting there (forget public transport it's a joke
where I live!), so a friend loaned me their car for the day having first
checked insurance etc. I parked the car in the multi storey car park and
went off for the meeting. Several hours later I returned to collect the car
looked around couldn't find it on the floor where I'd left it, so started to
hunt. Began on the ground floor and checked every level but still couldn't
find it. Panic was beginning to set in, but the car park attendant realising
something was amiss came over and asked what was wrong. I duly explained
and he asked me what type of car it was? Blank look in return, I hadn't a
clue, I'd only borrowed it after all. What colour was it? Another blank look
I couldn't remember. I had to phone my friend and ask him! Boy he was
impressed. So now armed with the knowledge of make and colour the car park
attendant helped me search the car park again, still no car. The attendant
then asked me You're sure you parked in this car park? Er but this is the
only car park in this block - No luv there's another just next door! Yep a
little over an hour later I found the car just where I left it, but in the
neighbouring car park.

Last time I borrowed a car.

Sounds like the time I parked in Birmingham.
DH was working up there for a couple of weeks, I went up for the
weekend and we visited his sister, then on the way home I stopped in
Birmingham and did some shopping. OK so far.

I was all alone, heavy shopping (floor tiles) and 150 miles from home
with the car parked near the exit of the car park with the big yellow
signs. Not having any NCP car parks in Kent I thought it would be a
doddle to find it, but how wrong i was. ALL the car parks in
Birmingham city centre were NCP with big yellow signs.

It is easy to recognize our generic blue stationwagon by the little doggie
nose prints on the front window and the big doggie smudgie prints on the
back windows, except of course on the day the car gets washed.

Hi everyone

I have been disoriented enough after shopping to forget where my car is,
but here's another twist:

In the days when every guy around here drove a pickup truck, one got used
to recognizing them by little details - the trim, the style of canopy (or
lack of one), something on the antenna, a particular dint. One hot day at
a busy parking lot, my FIL came out of a shop to see a fracus at a pickup
truck...which looked a lot like his, which he knew wasn't his, but he knew
the dog inside it *was* his. The dog was defending to the teeth this
pickup truck, against its rightful driver. What had happened, FIL left the
pooch in his own truck, with window down - the dog saw a truck it
'recognized' pull in (and they tell me the two trucks were very nearly the
same), and after the guy parked it, dog leaps out of its own truck, climbs
in through the open window of the duplicate (sort of) truck, and claimed
territory.

Highly embarassing as the dog was putting on quite a vicious performance.
I don't remember the real name of the dog; FIL called the poor thing
'pinhead' after that ~

Bev, My laugh for the day! What a dog, and you must have a great FIL who will
take his dog with him in his pick-up...

Isn't that what pick-ups are for? DH takes our dog (a Lasa Apso) with him
often, the dog is offended if he has to stay home.

Most certainly! When I was young, our dog went with Dad in his vehicle
all the time. The only way Dad could go without the dog was if he took his
work bag with him. It looked weird -- dress up clothes and the work
bag-- but the dog knew he had to stay home.

Alice in Oregon -- wet, windy and dreary. No end in sight.
