[lace-chat] Scanners

2004-06-16 Thread Joan Whitfield
I was congratulating myself on having a scanner that worked until I switched
it on - I'm making posters for the summer fair with a forties theme which is
happening, hopefully, at the end of July in the care home where I work, and
someone has given me a leaflet with wartime recipes. So thanks for the
advice (can't remember who it was) to reboot the computer whilst the scanner
is switched on. It worked.. So now I can copy, print and scan, but fax?
Just the thought of trying to work out how makes my eyes water.

I've been trying to set up the ability to fax on my computer runing Windows
98. I only need to send a fax about twice a year, eg if I need to send my
credit card details in hard copy, which I won't do, even in small chunks, by
email. I installed Microsoft fax - only works with Win 95 and Win 98. We've
probably got a fax program with the modem software, but I didn't want to
risk upsetting what's already workig OK.

I tried sending direct from Word, but that just wanted to try and send an
email, even though I'd instructed to 'Send fax' and had all the correct
details in the person's address in my address book.

Then I tried the scanner. Worked a treat at this end. Very simple. Just
selected 'Fax' for the scanning operation and followed the instructions.
What arrived at the other end was almost illegible. Perhaps it needs to be
sent at a very high resolution.

Then I tried Windows Messaging. I couldn't see exactly what I'd sent from an
appearance point of view, but it was very simple to do and the recipient
said the fax arrived perfectly and looked very professional.

Jean I had the same problem with trying to use the fax feature, perhaps I
will also try from windows messaging. The more complicated and advanced
things become the more they are prone to not complying with their features.

Must be something about scanners. Since the new year, our multi purpose
machine, will scan, print, and copy but won't fax. Given that the line for
the internet goes thru the machine, it makes one wonder why the line is fine
to go online but not fine to fax something. David, just where is the best
place to kick?

Whew!! Janice, sounds as if I had a narrow escape...imagine trying to solve
your scanner problems via the email!!(Perhaps I should explain that I run a
Help Desk for Lace 2000 and Janice is one of my customers!)

Wish I knew where to kick mine. When I try to use it through the correct
route it thinks that it is already being used so won't initialise (something
like that), I have to mess about taking the lead out of the back and sticking
it back in. It takes about 4 tries before it starts to warm up the lamp.
However I just found out that when I scan a background into my Lace 2000
program it works usually on the first attempt. After that I can scan through
my scanning program no problem. If I switch everything off for a couple of
hours and go back in it seems to remember that it was working and continues
through the regular route. I have complained to my pc guru (DS) but I
usually have to bribe him with a meal for him to come round and then he just
blames me and says its allergic to all that lace stuff I do!!
