..whereas I (bev) visit frequently two such boards, one for gardening,
one a women's arts exchange, both fascinating, informative pleasant
vehicles of discussion, with international subscribers, many whose first
language isn't english.

I guess we could debate pros and cons until bored -

..via *public* webshots - and best accessed if folks remember to put the
link in their message. It isn't that I can't bookmark it and check it out
- but that step makes it once removed from the message.

But that is the beauty of the message board - graphics can be used, and
lacefully so, if it is 'our' group - as to the smileys, they *do* help
convey emotion and intent, for instance, would probably have saved a lot
of angst
and discussion regarding the last such episode on chat, re the London
bombinbs (for instance). The emoticons are easier to understand than ASCI
smileys, which can easily be missed in a line of text, or misunderstood...

This works for those who can handle a lot of individual messages, and
subscribe to the reflected list. For those of us having to process a lot
ofmail, where subscribing to the digest is better, then message managing
becomes a lot of cut and paste (no big deal, really - but no graphics
either). and for what it's worth, I'll mention for me it is better to
keep subscribing to arachne via my plain text server, and visit the
message boards of my choice via the Windows interface.

Somebody did set up such a message board for lace, here, called the Lace
Forum (more for those in the state of Virginia)
http://lace.jasidog.com/index.php?s=6719e4b1cacbbb5d5857ce4a1d52653d&act=idx
and though I signed up, few else wanted to play - I believe there are
other lace e-mail groups who use the board system, the arachne one is
quite special, and I can envision a lace-topia, where the nature of
arachne
could transfer to the message board system for better accessibility to
archives, graphics, topics re lace, topics re chat - that's all.

Despite that it is a moot topic, I just thought I'd mention it ;)

And that's one of my nightmares. I have used some of these web based
message boards, and find their interfaces very slow compared to a good email
client with threading. They frustrate me so much that I end up posting much
less than I would on an email list. Having to be online to compose messages
and transmitting higher amounts of data for the same information for all the
pretty message interface graphics would limit the opportunity for
participation of people who live in countries where flat rate internet
access doesn't exist.

My ideal is somewhere for pictures as a complement to the email list, like
some members use webshots now.

A fond wish of mine is that the nature of this list, both lace and chat,
could be transferred to message board software, controlled by an Admin.
(often a small team, when the topics become many and varied) with
including being able to post pictures in one's message, or at a gallery on
the site. These can be made fairly private, to subscribers only, and even
subscription can be controlled, so as to discourage moles and others who
would be unfriendly. Further you can do private messaging without
using e-mail. I subscribe to several, non-yahoo groups, run by private
individuals using such software - it is accessible, doesn't even require
fast dialup, and even, and especially, Mac users participate.

There can be public access for some threads, for instance anything to do
with encouraging newcomers to lace, and there are members-only threads,
for special interest stuff, especially member surveys, or more private
chat with each other that wouldn't interest/shouldn't interest the
'public.' As far as I know, when the forum is locked to members only,
there is no other access (such as if you google your name - and surprise,
you see yourself in a message you've written...).
