Yes, I've heard about these systems. Quite clever.

However, from a practical sense - the HG is the confirmer of truth.
Mathematics is merely a language that describes natural processes
with both precision and accuracy.

They are both handy tools, but I fail to see where such an effort to
analyze articles on JS will yield anything of real value and move the
mission statement of the Church along in a meaningful way.

As one of my prof's (Fred Gruenberg - RAND fellow) used to say
about technology: "Just because we can, does not mean we should..."

There's been a bit of research in this in the past five years. There
wastwo talks I heard at a recent Computational Lingustics Conference
on this topic. The systems they talked about did quite well. One I
think achieved around 98% accuracy at deciding was written by a
pakestani or israeli point of view. Of course, these systemsworked
with a small set of articles and a small set ofdomains so applying
this research to internet scope tools probably would be quite
challenging. But, I could see a tool like this as a possibility in the
future.

That kind of debating nonsense is best left to people that enjoy that
sort of thing, and
those whose knowledge is far greater than what I've seen on this list.

This list is better off focusing on solvable problems that bring order

and efficiency to
the Church today (or near so).

Re: [Ldsoss] Scout Tracking

2006-06-25 Thread Oscar Schultz
Since you already put in a lot of time and effort you should better know where
the problems are in a web based system. Outlining the problems would save
anyone just starting a lot of time and false starts. .

Please outline what requirements you believe a tracking program should satisfy
and what features you believe are needed (perhaps level 1,2 and 3 level
requirements/features).
Please outline the security/protection requirements (rather than
implementation methods) you found.

thanks

Although this message is not in reply to a specific message, I'm going to

Having put some serious thought and energy into development of a web based
troop tracking system, I have been following this thread with a great deal
of interest. This has helped me to gel some of the concerns and ideas that
I've had in the past together.

First; if someone is to sponsor a central database, we should *not* look to
the church for a scouting oriented database. We should offer our efforts
to BSA. This way, the program could benefit all scouts and not be viewed
 exclusively as an LDS thing.

Second; DTG should become part of MIS, or at the very least, be centralized
through the clerks office. This way, all of the features that have been
touted of the etrailtoeagle program can be realized via the church email
 system.

Third; to alleviate the concerns that have been expressed about the volume
of personal information stored in an online database, I would suggest just
not allowing for the storage of that information. What is the requirement
for tracking all of the things that TroopMaster tracks? Personally, I
think TroopMaster suffers from massive feature creep. Things like
insurance values, license numbers and parental contact information should
either be tracked completely offline or on paper. Although the improved
security garnered by this approach is dubious, the fact that we're trying
to track progress and not all the ancillary things associated with scouting
should serve as a primary focus. I think that the discussion has been
healthy but that there are definitely different views of what the scope of
the project is going to be. Without some definition of this scope, the
discussion to date can have *very* different meanings for each person on
 the list.

I think that Tom [0] should set down some initial criterion for the project
before anyone decides to spin off yet another scout tracking system
 (YASTS).

Re: [Ldsoss] I don't know if this has a software solution or not...

2006-06-25 Thread Thomas Haws
Perhaps it is my Wikipedia background, but I see point of view sorting as highly beneficial to the work of bringing souls to Christ. When a person is yearning to learn the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, a high-quality point of view sorter is invaluable in making sure he gets the complete vista of the matter before making judgement.
If I want to know and learn from the greats of days gone by including Joseph Smith, Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Lucy Mack Smith, Ghandi, Tolstoy, etc., I want to be sure that I am not getting my info from the likes of Fawn Brodie alone. But such as Brodie may have a thing or to to teach me along the way if I am humble enough. I say this without having read Brodie herself.
I would give nothing but encouragement to those who work on any kind of information sorters in good faith.Love,Tom-- Tom Haws 480-201-5476There is no way to peace.Peace is the way.
