After a bunch of mail with Martin Hejl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> we figured out what the problem was: the version of syslinux on my laptop, which I was using to prepare the CF card, is too new! The version I was trying to use is 2.10.1 (Debian testing); it's apparently incompatible with the Net4501 in some way (BIOS, I assume; no I didn't try upgrading since 1.15 works for me otherwise.) The version in hdsupp.lrp works fine.
