[leaf-user] Suggestion/request

2006-10-18 Thread Lists dumbware
Hi Bering-uClibc Team!
I'm wondering if it could be possible to think to a backward compatible
function that save a modified lrp package without configdb intervention.
(BuC 2.x like)
This because in BuC 2.x I use a custom lrp package that I WANT to
consolidate with some modifications in its files!

Thanks

[leaf-user] ipsec

2006-10-18 Thread Andrew Nance
I was wondering if there is any documentation for using ipsec or some form
of vpn and Bering uClibc.

Specifically, I am using 3.0 beta 2 BuC with a standard 3 nic setup. I was
wanting to setup (a secure) remote desktop to multiple windows servers on my
dmz and possibly also a workstation on the local network. I have read that
a vpn will be the most secure way to access these machines.
Any help or tips you can give me will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

[leaf-user] Wireless access point with Bering uClibc?

2006-10-18 Thread Jim Ford
I'd like to use an access point I have with my Bering uClibc box. I
guess that because of security issues with wireless networking, what I
need to do is to hang it off another ethernet card, with the network
configured as a DMZ. Tom Eastep describes a 3 card setup, but does
anyone know of other howtos that might help, please? Also, any 'gotchas'
spring to mind?

[leaf-user] Why to use uClibc?

2006-10-18 Thread Rob Ogle
I've got a customer that is prime for a uClibc installation using OpenVPN.
The head of IT is against user supported/GNU software.

Are there any sites where I can show him that uClibc is safe and reliable
(since my word isn't good enough)?

This because in BuC 2.x I use a custom lrp package that I WANT to
consolidate with some modifications in its files!

It's not possible to create a backwards compatible option in BuC 3.0,
the config system got a complete overhaul.
But why does your package need the modifications internal?

You can still use custom packages and if you really want, you can
store the changes in the package in a tmp directory on the router,
make the changes and repack.

He is against GNU Software in general ? Well, in that case, it wouldn't
be better if we did use another libc like glibc...
Do you know why he is against it ? Is it because he thinks this kind of
software is of bad quality ? Or does he need someone to blame for if it
does not work as expected ? Or does he just want to pay for it ;-) ??

Are there any sites where I can show him that uClibc is safe and reliable

I don't know of any special site about this. But almost every linux
based commercial router out there seems to use it (together with
busybox)... You could look at the uclibc.org page or the mailing list,
though.

Re: [leaf-user] Wireless access point with Bering uClibc?

2006-10-18 Thread dmb.leaf-user
Hi Jim,

This sounds exactly like what I do - I have a wireless access point connected
via a cross-over cable to a separate NIC on the Bering-uClibc box. In fact I
have 4 NICs - Internet (WAN) connection, Internal (LAN) connection, a DMZ and
also the wireless LAN connection. I don't mind so much if somebody gets onto my
wireless LAN and connects to the Internet, but I'd rather keep them off my
wired LAN.

Basically you need to add another Interface, another Shorewall Zone and then
define Rules and Policies like you get by default for the loc Zone. You'll
also need an entry in /etc/shorewall/masq to NAT the wireless traffic out to
the Internet. I've set things up so the wireless connection is more like the
loc zone than dmz.

I'd like to use an access point I have with my Bering uClibc box. I
guess that because of security issues with wireless networking, what I
