Re: [LU] Ticket?

2024-05-23 Thread Steve Gillen
I think we all know you tried Richard and it was a great idea, but as always
has been with the national stadium teal fans come second to what the stadium
owners can get. Wembley has more than 10,000 tickets of one type or another to
disperse as they wish

I want to know if Rishi Sunak will pay for his seat (and his accompanying
security staff) as he is not an indifferent neutral but a stated passionate fan
of one of the clubs - and he's only a multimillionaire not a Billionaire (yet)
so has to save money somehow

Re: [LU] Sunderland

2024-04-10 Thread Steve Gillen
"We don’t have to finish above both Ipswich and Leicester, just one of them
will do."

Which is what I've been saying for weeks. We Need to be in first position
otherwise we become the sole target. To get promoted tgey only have to achieve
second place. First would be great but second still gets promoted. Our current
second position with both our rival above and below having games in hand (yes I
know games are not points) makes us a prime target for (at this moment Ipswich).

I'm pleased we are where we are, but it is a dangerously precarious place to be.

Re: [LU] NON-LU - Michael Benjamin?

2023-10-10 Thread Steve Gillen
Hi all..

I wrote to Mike on Saturday evening enquiring after his situation and that of
his family and close friends. He replied the next day that he is ok and that he
and his family are not in Gaza and for the moment quite safe. He had his
standard, and in the circumstances quite understandable, short rant about the
situation, and more personally how he finds it difficult and embarrassing
interacting with his Arab secretary, whom he likes and respects a great deal.
He was comforted by the fact that people outside of his locality are moved to
show concern for him. He also mentioned that he saw Saturdays game and still
thinks we are not good enough, but a win is still a win 🤷🏼‍♂️

With permission, I shall let Mike know people here have been asking after his
safety.

Re: [LU] Watford

2023-09-24 Thread Steve Gillen
I can't say that I disagree with what you say, but I think our hew owners would
want to see a return on their investment and look to fund the planned ground
improvements. That's not even considering that we are enjoying this league as
we have the young talent to perform to our hopes and expectations; if we don't
get promoted or at least very near as a springboard for the following year to
get promoted, then as we have already learned, that talent will either be
picked off by the bigger boys or will move on for the benefit of their own
careers. We all may have been loyal fans since God was a lad, but our current
full grounds could well become what we've all seen an experienced before - a
midweek drizzling night game against the likes of Crewe with a gate of 17000
and thinking that's good.

We may not like it but it's now become the nature of the beast. Money is the
only way forward in football and the only measure of success.or we can just
become a club that "was good at one time"

Re: [LU] Fwd: Cardiff

2023-08-08 Thread Steve Gillen
My main frustration from Sunday was watching our talented and skillful front
players tip tapping it from one to the other. Towards the end I was literally
shouting at the TV (I was unable to go to this game) "for f***s sake will
someone shoot"? - people have been awful to poor Paddy but I have always rated
him, I have known very few with the skill to hold things until support arrives
as well as he does. And he does shoot, even if he misses, he at least has a go.
If Paddy can't be brought back and soon, then Sunday taught me that a proven
goal scorer has to be our priority.

Thank goodness Summerville took the advice and tried a shot.

Personally I see no reason we can't or won't win. Arsenal are good this season
and I would not at all be surprised if they do beat us; however, there have not
and will not win every game home or away, some will be lost, likely more drawn
(which I'd gladly accept for this game), so there is always a chance we could
do something good Another Wolves away result would be tremendous.

Re: [LU] Brighton

2023-03-12 Thread Steve Gillen
I pretty much agree with all this except to add that yesterday's performance
was about as poor as I've ever seen of Leeds. I mean insofar as we have players
of talent who are excellent and may be enough to save us but those players are
just that. They are not playing much as a team, I'm pointing to Utter and to
some degree Harrison, they try to do it alone it felt. The exception being
Gnonto, he did play for others and was the spark we were looking for often. I
very much got the feeling that our coach has laid the law down that we don't
all fly forward and leave ourselves open at the back (Ayling take note) which
meant that we were not as exciting to watch as we have been, but not the
walkover we used to be - well not as much as we used to be, we still had our
moments of squeaky bum - sadly though that meant that we struggled to force
ourselves upon Brighton. I honestly could see no way we might score until up
popped Bamford, but even then he didn't receive service so much as he had to
make it himself.

I struggle to see how we can make it this year as everyone around us is doing
something and we aren' - sigh. I am so disappointed.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the loss to the list, Leeds United
and, most importantly, his family, Dave Dowden. I did not know Dave personally
and to my mind we never met, knowingly. I suspect we may well have met on one
or other Lards outings at the Worldnet tournament latterly held in Adel.

My deepest sympathies I extend to his family and hope they might find a little
comfort in the fact that his real and virtual friends will likewise miss him
and honour his memory.

RIP Dave. The list remembers you.

OK your point is taken that it was not a penalty as Bamford had fouled first,
I accept that.. HOWEVER, the red card should have remained as whether the
ball was in play or not that was a studs up kick out attack and would be
classed as violent conduct and should still be a sending off. Am I right or
what? Or are the players now allowed to chin each other to no consequence
because the ball is in touch and not in play?

Happy retirement Kevin Prepare to find yourself busier than you were at

Enjoy more than I did - after the first few months we had 2 years of lock

Hands off or not Alex the pulling of saka back by his shirt neck WAS dangerous
play and could potentially caused damage to his windpipe. No question for me
that should have been a red card. I think even Cellini (spelling?) expected it

Re: [LU] Burnley

2020-12-28 Thread Steve Gillen
.”.maybe Burnley, knowing this, were doing a great job at covering every player
in
that area who was trying to get open.but the fact was that just
about every one of his medium to long passes went to them”

Actually it seemed to me to be not just Meslier, too many cleared balls and
often passes from outfield player were simply picked off by Burnley players,
just bringing the pressure back on us again.

Frankly I thought it was a pretty awful desperate game, the sort that it is
good to come out of with all three points, but let’s be honest, how many of us
would have accepted a daw as a fair result? Maybe not even a draw, our penalty
was not a penalty, well in my opinion, and their goal should have stood.
Frankly we got the points by some piss poor refereeing and then hanging on by
our fingernails.

The good to take from the game. We had the league specialists and playing and
scoring from a dead ball against the worst performing team at corners and dead
balls. Yet still we held them off.

So on to the Baggies. Let’s hope their new found form (a point from
Liverpool)is not yet set in stone and we come back all guns blazing.

I would be very disappointed if LUFC didn't start legal action against any
disproportionate penalty, in particular points deduction. Nothing illegal was
done, no damage was caused to property or trespassing. So any penalty could be
argued to be illegal and grossly unfair. If it is so important that this is
secret training then it should be behind closed doors or high fences, if not
the are not Derby partially culpable for not guarding their so called secrets?

Re: [LU] Millwall

2018-09-15 Thread Steve Gillen
I'm pretty sure Middlesborough would have snapped up a similar result
themselves. The Don always used to say the mark of a great team is not that
they always ride over every other team but how they hang on and prepared to
slog it out when they are clearly not playing near at their best. Of course I
would have preferred a win but I'll surely take the draw today.

[LU] LU: support for depressed fans

2018-03-27 Thread Steve Gillen
I've just heard on the news that Lincoln City are starting a mental health
programmer to help fans who may be suffering from depression and/or anxiety.
Good for them, but surely LIFC should be doing this too, as I can't think of a
group of fans anywhere who don't find themselves as depressed as we (regularly)
do! During the matches the anxiety levels could fill the stadium many times
over.

Joking apart, good for you Lincoln, any approach to help people who suffer from
this mostly invisible problem is a step forward.

If major footballing completion location awards have been made under an
umbrella of corruption and lies then the results of such should be deemed
void.
If all this has substance and can be proved, then FIFA has to be sanitised
then a restart process should be established to see which venues are
selected on a level playing pitch. Ahem. What a mess. Alternatively, disband
the shamed FIFA and expose how long this has been going on for.

Qatar, you can tools down for now, although what a tragic waste of human
life in the meantime - thanks FIFA (The Official World Governing Authority)

The only thing I am pleased with Bradford winning
is a guy I know at work hade a 40p treble running
on 3 outside chances (one of which was Bradford of

Re: [LU] Steve Gillen

2014-05-06 Thread Steve Gillen
Mea Culpa

John is quite correct I am around but simply have
had no time (or much inclination) to trek upstairs
to the mail computer to indulge in the list
(Paula's computer is downstairs so when I was in
hospital. she could pretty much write updates
fairly comfortably). I have been on facebook using
my phone to be honest.

Well as you know I was rushed into hospital
unconscious and suffering from what I am now told
was/is Toxic shock syndrome and I was in an
induced coma for nearly 4 weeks, during which time
I am told I was a breath away for totally cashing
my chips in (dying) - my liver and kidneys closed
down and my heart was wavering. I had multiple
infections, but the main one would not react to
most antibiotics. All credit to the medical staff,
they put me on temporary dialysis and somehow
figured out what I had - apparently its ladies who
mostly get this, though men and children can also
get it -0 they also got me started on the long
road back. Eventually they brought me out of the
coma then after a while I went from the ICU to the
high dependency Unit and then to a ward where I
was in Isolation and on then to a normal ward. The
last 2/3 weeks were spent in a nearby care home in
what is termed as a "Kick Bed" (Strange as I
couldn't have kicked a balloon at the time)
working with Physios - I learned that everything
they showed on last week's Panorama is not just
confined to those 2 homes featured. to learn to
walk again and use my hands (another reason I have
not been on much, it hurts my fingertips to type)
as my muscles had atrophied when in a coma and not
being used. Progress is definitely happening, but
frustratingly slow. I can now walk short distances
around the home, my writing is crap as there is no
strength in my hands and my fingers are constantly
sore. I have ulcerous wounds on my lower left leg
which require dressing by the district nurses at
least every 2 days - soon to be every day for a
week which they try compression dressings. I have
passed a test for me to drive as we have an
automatic, but I am really sparing with this as I
don't feel entirely safe for other road users.

Just to complicate matters Paula hurt her foot
treading on some glass and the wound got infected
and worsened and she has now been in hospital for
the past week and has had her right big toe
amputated! We expect her to still be in for up to
the next 7 days (Visiting her at the LGI is the
sparing use of the car I mentioned - thankfully we
have a mobility scooter and hoist in the car so I
can get around the hospital) - even the cat has a
kidney problem and has to have medication daily!

>From all of this you can probably see why I have
not been around, but from this believe me I am
keeping up as best I can and am always checking
the results however I can. I apologise for not
telling you all this earlier (Sorry Guy)

I will be properly back, but it may take until
next month yet .

Best wishes and grateful thanks for your care and
concern all

Steve Gillen (a lifelong, and hopefully much
longer, Leeds United fan)

Haven't posted for some time, don't suppose
anyone's noticed but then things have been so
depressing I suspect others didn't feel like
posting as well. However the principle for reason
for the lack of posting has been (another) period
of incarceration in hospital and it's been enough
of a problem trying to keep up with things and
access mail and the internet, never mind actively
mailing.

All of which leeds me to the purpose of this mail.
Before I went into hospital I had seen the news
about Steve and Paula's mails updating us on his
condition. In fact one of my last mails to the
list was a reply to one of Paula's posts. However
I haven't seen anything for some time. As I've
missed a lot of list mail as well this is probably
not surprising but can anyone update on Steve and
how he and Paula are?

Hello Leeds List,

I am not sure how to contact you all so hopefully

tell you that Steve is in ICU in very, very
critical condition. He has infections that the
doctors cannot identify that are attacking his
body and are trying to find an antibiotic(s) that
will be able to kill it. So far they are only
managing barely to keep him from dying. He is on
dialysis and has been put into an induced coma and
is on a ventilator. They are doing everything they
can. My email address is pgil...@ntlworld.com. I
have sent this email to my computer in case things
go horribly wrong and I can let you know. Please

[LU] Non LU: British Humour at its best

2014-02-07 Thread Steve Gillen

For those who do not listen to the 'Today'
programme on Radio 4, this is English humour at
its best.

Right at the end of a programme recently, there
was a discussion about the obscene cost of entry
into Premiership football games, the cheapest
price of £60 and £100 per game is not uncommon.

An older chap being interviewed said he could
recall many years ago arriving at the turnstiles
(it was probably West Ham United): "That will be
ten quid, mate".
"What?!" the old chap said "I could get a woman
for that!"

The guy on the turnstile retorted, "Not for 45
minutes each way with a Marching brass band and a
meat pie in the interval, you wouldn't!"

No.. I never said that - I simply said that as
those companies chose to sponsor a certain team
then I choose not to support their products - this
I was agreeing is a risk companies take if they
sponsor something which generates passionate
feelings in people - some you will over and others
will hate you for it.

With the big pay cheques professional sportsmen
collect also comes a big responsibility in that
they are the face of the club and continually they
forget that.

Zoopla pay a huge amount amount of money expecting
the advertising of their name to gain a beneficial
return. But if some idiot wearing their name
upsets their customers (even just a small
percentage) then its not money well spent from
their perspective.

And its not just the player's behavior in the
first place, if the press keeps the story alive
then Zoopla's name will continually be associated
with this act as the photo is continually
reprinted.

We're a basically a nobody when it comes to the
American market.  As uninformed as many American
sports/soccer fans are they all know Chelsea,
Manu, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Shitty after
that...it drops off. When I mention Leeds I have
to explain who we are. We are almost on the same
level on transatlantic fame as Rochdale,
Gillingham, etc.
The gulf in fame and finances between us and the
top boys is massive.

[LU] NON LU: Recommended Conveyancing Solicitor

2014-01-10 Thread Steve Gillen
HI Guys,

Just an off the wall shot, but does any of you
know (or possibly me be one yourself) a decent
local solicitor for conveyancing?

My wife Paula and I are about to purchase a
property and have no experience in these matters
at all and rather than stick a pin in the phone
book so to speak (Google really) I thought it may
be best to start with the fountain of all
knowledge, my friends on the list.

Any and all suggestions (printable ones that is)
would be gratefully received

Cheers

Steve & Paula Gillen

Re: [LU] United Announce 49'ers Link Up

2014-01-10 Thread Steve Gillen

Wow! I've been a 49'ers fan for years and years -
well since it started to be shown on UK TV in the
days when Joe Montana was the quarterback - so now
my favourite US team is allied with Leeds United
my only real sports interest - Am I a happy bunny
or what?

[LU] LU - John Grampa Sykes

2013-12-02 Thread Steve Gillen
I am so saddened by this news even I can hardly
believe it. I will miss John, despite the fact
that I never met him, but he always spoke with a
passion for Leeds United and a love of all things
Yorkshire and Leeds in particular. The world is a
lesser place for the loss of him. My sincerest
condolences to his family and real life friends.

RIP Mate until we are all reunited again and

My wife is a college lecturer and occasionally
sends the students out to do research or FOFO
(fuck off and find out) before the next lecture.
She used to be a nurse and there are hundreds, if
not thousands that relate to bodily functions.

NORWICH is a bit like CHINA.

Re: [LU] is the list dead ??

2013-11-25 Thread Steve Gillen
Personally I have been on redecorating duty for
the past 5 days - or was it a decade? It certainly
feels like it - so I have hardly approached the
computer except in the dark of the night and by
then am too knackered to do much more than read
what everyone else has to say...

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it

Only saw the snippet of the game on TV and read a
few reports, but I share you unease tbh, we're
getting results against weaker teams but we are
not a convincing promotion team, we've all got
remember that it's still work in progress and
accept the rough with the smooth. All in all the
best thing so far has been the rise of Mowatt, so
that he's now an automatic pick for the first
team, lets hope BMcD brings on some more
youngsters.

Asking if it was snowing Mr Walker wondered why
the yellow ball. Well ...

YELLOW WINTER FOOTBALLS FROM THIS WEEKEND

>From this weekend all 72 Football League clubs
will use special yellow footballs up until the end
of February following the introduction of a new
official match-ball by the Football League from
Mitre.

Mitre, the Official Ball Supplier of The Football
League, have launched the new hi-visibility
match-ball today (Friday) but Parkinson's side
have been training all week with the new
footballs.

The Delta V12 Fluo is the hi-visibility version of
the most advanced FIFA approved quality match ball
ever made. The fluo yellow colour is
scientifically proven to deliver speedier player
reaction times in poor visibility. The combination
of 12 panels and textured grain surface keeps the
ball stable at over 70mph.

All matches in the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet
League 1 and Sky Bet League
2 will use the state of the art new Mitre
footballs from this weekend, up until the end of
February.  The ball will also be used in the
Johnstone´s Paint Trophy for the Area Quarter
Finals, Area Semi-Finals and Area Finals.

***
Weather prediction:
There will be an exceptionally mild christmas and
winter with generally clear skys and little
precipitation until the end of February when the
country will be hit by severe snowfall and ice
lasting till the end of the season.
