[LU] EFL finally approve the takeover

2023-07-17 Thread Wiggy
   From the official site…

   Statement.

Today, Leeds United Football Club can announce that the EFL has
approved the sale of the Club to 49ers Enterprises, paving the way for
   the immediate transition of ownership.

Paraag Marathe, previously Vice Chairman and Board member of the Club,
will take over as Leeds United Chairman. In this role, Marathe will
oversee all aspects of the Club, including football and business
operations, and drive the strategy to fight for promotion back to the
Premier League in the 2023-2024 season. Marathe takes over
from Andrea Radrizzani, who has been majority owner of Leeds United
since 2017. Angus Kinnear, CEO of Leeds United and Board member, will
remain in his current position, and continue to direct the Club’s
day-to-day operations. Rudy Cline-Thomas, Founder and Managing Partner
of MASTRY, will join the Board as Co-Owner and Vice Chairman of the
   Club.

“This is an important moment for Leeds United and we are already hard
at work,” said Marathe. “This transition is a necessary reset to chart
a new course for the Club. We have already appointed a highly-respected
First Team Manager with a track record of success, and we are confident
Leeds will field a competitive squad to contend for promotion next
season. It’s a privilege to carry this torch as I know we have a
responsibility to ensure this Club makes our staff, players,
supporters, and the Leeds and Yorkshire communities proud."

Cline-Thomas added, "With my family hailing from Leeds, it's an honour
to be able to uplift this incredible community. This is more than just
an opportunity, it's a personal mission. The chance to reinvigorate the
cherished Leeds culture, to create a platform that attracts the world's
finest players, and build a truly global brand that celebrates
diversity, is a prospect that thrills me.”

49ers Enterprises, led by Marathe and 49ers CEO Jed York, has steadily
supported and increased its investment in Leeds United over the past
five years. Moving forward, the group will look to enhance all aspects
of the Club both on and off the pitch. Marathe, Kinnear, and the Club
recently announced the appointment of Daniel Farke as First Team
Manager. The Club's leadership has also been laying the groundwork to
build a successful squad by retaining key players from last season’s
team as well as bringing in new talent.

“49ers Enterprises is bringing fresh leadership, management, and a
commitment to investment, which I’m confident will meet our ambition to
compete for promotion and remain in the top flight as an established
Premier League Club,” said Kinnear. “I know Paraag, Rudy and 49ers
Enterprises will keep supporters central to their plans during their
custodianship and I am excited to work in realising the true potential
   of this great club.”

Radrizzani said, “It has been an honour to guide Leeds United over the
last six years and to spend so much time with the best fanbase in the
world. 49ers Enterprises have been fantastic partners for years and I'm
confident they will take Leeds to the next level.”

For more information about Paraag Marathe and Rudy Cline-Thomas, their
bios can be found on the Leeds [1]Website.

[LU] Orta gone

2023-05-02 Thread Wiggy
From the official site…

Club statement.

Leeds United can confirm Victor Orta has left the club by mutual consent.

Victor joined the Whites in the summer of 2017 and helped oversee changes at
the club that led to Leeds United being promoted back to the Premier League in
2020.

Over the years Victor and his team have been responsible for recruiting players
and staff that have gone on to become legends of the club.

Owner Andrea Radrizzani said: “I am deeply saddened by the way that this
chapter closes as Victor has been responsible for some of the best moments of
my time as owner of Leeds United and I thank him and his people for all they
have done in the past six years.

“However, it is clear that it is time to change direction and therefore we have
agreed that Victor will leave the club.

“I understand supporters are hurt and upset, but now is a time for unity.

“We have four cup finals left to play this season and working together, I
believe we can survive.

[LU] Meet the new boss...

2022-02-28 Thread Wiggy

not quite the same as the old boss...

https://www.leedsunited.com/news/team-news/29569/jesse-marsch-appointed-leeds-united-head-coach

or to save you clicking on the link...:

New head coach confirmed.

Leeds United can today announce the appointment of Jesse Marsch as the
club’s new head coach, pending international clearance.

The 48-year-old has signed a deal at Elland Road running until June 2025
and his first game in charge will be Saturday’s Premier League trip at
Leicester City.

Marsch, a former USA international midfielder, previously played for
D.C. United, Chicago Fire and Chivas USA in the MLS.

Following his retirement from playing, he became an assistant with the
USA national team, before being named as the first head coach of
Montreal Impact in 2012.

Three years later, he was named New York Red Bulls boss and led them to
the MLS Supporters’ Shield and was also named the 2015 MLS Coach of the
Year.

In 2018, he left New York Red Bulls as the coach with the most wins in
the club’s history, joining German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig as
assistant to Ralf Rangnick.

Ahead of the 2019/20 season he was named head coach of sister club Red
Bull Salzburg and went on to have great success, winning both the
Austrian Bundesliga and Austrian Cup in consecutive seasons.

This led to him returning to RB Leipzig as head coach last summer, which
was his most recent position, prior to parting ways in December.

He will now be looking to guide Leeds United away from the Premier
League relegation places over the final 12 games of the campaign.

Speaking about the appointment, Leeds United Director of Football Victor
Orta said: “We are delighted to welcome Jesse to the club and excited
for him to lead us into this new chapter.

“Jesse is someone we identified a number of years ago during his time at
Red Bull Salzburg and we believe his philosophy and style of football
aligns with that of the club and will suit the players very well.

“We have a long-term plan and firmly believe he can take Leeds United to
the next level and are excited for what the future holds.”

Chief Executive Angus Kinnear added: “We are really pleased to have
quickly secured the services of our first-choice head coach.

“Whilst the short-term objective for Jesse is obvious, we believe he has
the courage and ambition to build on the strong foundations we have
created over the last four years and elevate the performance of the club
over the long-term.  He had a great deal of success with New York Red
Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg and has demonstrated during our many
meetings that he is a great fit with the footballing culture of Leeds
United.

“At this challenging time, it is important that the club remains united
from top to bottom. The fans have been amazing throughout Andrea’s
tenure and we have no doubt they will unite behind Jesse and ensure the
team quickly returns to winning with style.”

I did it by car a few months ago, just before the trust had released the
map. If you're without a car, then aside from Pablo (Duck & Drake) and
Kalvin (The Calls, just round the corner), they're quite spread out.

There's a multi-player mural at Pudsey Bus Station, and a Bielsa one at
Hyde Park Corner - both of which should easily be accessible by bus from
Leeds itself - but the others, such as Bielsa the Redeemer, Speedo etc
were a fair bit apart from what I remember. You'd have to check which
buses, if any, go across the outskirts to see whether that works for
you. Otherwise, you may need to get a taxi to some of them to avoid
having to go back into town and out again.

Yup, Alan and I had the same chat at the time. He wondered where the f**k he

Given what we also saw against Fulham, we need the likes of Cooper etc to reign

[LU] Transfers (was Spurs)

2021-01-05 Thread Wiggy

Matt wrote

Transfers - most obvious reason is we might not have the money. We
spent £100m in the summer, we probably expected some gate receipts this
year when budgeting and now even full crowds for next year are looking
uncertain. Its probably more sensible to wait and see what the finances
look like in the summer.

2nd reason would be that player are generally over-priced in the Jan
window as desperate clubs try to save their seasons - we are not in that
category

Also, most new signings don't tend to brought into the first team squad until they are
"Bielsa-fit". If we signed someone right at the end of January, what's the odds
on them actually playing before March?

If folk are thinking about us buying a new CB, then by the time they were ready
to play, you'd hope that Koch and Llorente would be available again.

It was 9am today, and was sold out by 11 apparently...

There were a lot of problems with the website - option to buy didn’t show for

[LU] U23 3-0 winners at FT

2019-03-04 Thread Wiggy
Same 11 started the second half, though only 10 were out when the whistle went!
Guessing there was a queue for the shitter.

Lively start, Brown got sent through wide twice, both times getting good
crossed in , but nowt came of them.

Shacks seems to have moved into central midfield with Gotts dropping into RB.

FK from Oduor on the right got to Brown at the far post, neat touch crossed it
back, but Oduor dragged his shot wide.

Oduor booked for late challenge in LB position on our bye line. Another
free(ish) header went just wide. Phew.

Brown looking a little weary 15 mins into the half. Possibly explains why he’s
not got a run in the firsts. (In his defence, he may have got a knock )

Male’s kicking from feet generally good. Always trying to find a man rather
than wildly hoofing upfield.

Edmondson not had much of the ball so far. Took a couple of players on at the
edge of the box after an hour. Got put through one on one after 65 mins, but
keeper saved. He’s pressuring the keeper well when he has the ball which has
led to dodgy clearances.

Nice spell around 60-70 mins with a couple of half chances.

Great move after 70 - Gotts played a nice pass wide, kept running for the
return, pulled it back for a shot by Bogusz, which hit the post.

2-0 . FK put in from the left, nodded in on the line by Struijk!

A minute later, Shacks was put through inside right, unselfishly pulled back,
though just behind Brown, who couldn’t get a shot in.

Edmondson replaced by Mihaylov.

Good work by Stevens (after a lovely cross field ball by Brown) to get past a
defender wide and cross in, but no one was there to get onto it.

3-0! Another great ball by Brown for Stevens, who put in a lovely low cross for
Mihaylov to score!

Diaz replaced by Hosannah, who’s dropped into Rb

Brown put through centrally, but dinked it over the keeper and wide.

Kick from hands from Male put Stevens through inside right, stayed on his feet
after being fouled, went for a corner. Nowt came of it.

Brown (looking knackered) replaced by Kamwa, who’s gone wide right , with
Stevens switching to the left,

Great build up play almost led to a comedy own goal (went wide for a corner).

Looking lively again after the subs.

Went to sleep briefly at the back, but luckily their number 10 shot wide.

Some good young prospects here. The future’s bright (and white!!).

[LU] U23s 1-0 up at HT

2019-03-04 Thread Wiggy
Lineup - Male; Shackleton, Oduor, Struijk, Halme; Diaz; Stevens, Gotts, Bogusz,
Brown; Edmondson.
Subs: Rae (GK), Kamwa, McCalmont, Hosannah, Mihaylov.

Diaz sitting in front of the back four
Brown wide left, Gotts and Bogusz central, Stevens wide right

Male constantly talking to the defence, which is good.

Shackleton making good early runs down the line. Looking lively all through the
half.

Nice passing in the main. Bogusz split the defence for Stevens to cross in, but
Watford cleared. Brown shrugged off a defender, but his shot went wide .

Brown scored after 23 mins. Got ball out wide after FK outside our area sent
Gotts in loads of space in the middle, came inside past a couple of defenders
and slid it home. Initially thought he was a bit greedy, but he finished well.

Gave ‘em 2 free headers from corners - a little worrying.

Brown getting caught offside more than Alioski.

Liking the look of Shackleton , Diaz, Stevens , Gotts and Bogusz . Brown a
little hot and cold (had another mazy run where he should have passed/crossed
but dribbled on and had his shot blocked). Like he’s trying a bit too hard. He
and Oduor occasionally lost a man down our left.

Most instructions from the sidelines are in Spanish for Diaz.

Overall am fairly impressed so far...

While I in no way condone what Saiz did , to those on the interweb calling for
him to be sacked, without his earlier performances we'd be nowhere near as high
up the table. Often he's been the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

Good news is that teams are probably less likely to go for him during the

[LU] Monk and Wagner get fine and ban

2017-02-27 Thread Wiggy

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39106444

Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has been given a two-match touchline
ban and a £6,000 fine after his altercation with Leeds counterpart Garry
Monk.

Wagner sprinted down the touchline to join his players in celebrating
their late winner before clashing with Monk.

Monk has been given a one-match touchline ban and fined £3,000.

In addition, both clubs have been fined £10,000 for failing to ensure
their players "conducted themselves in an orderly fashion".

The FA said in a statement: "Mr Wagner admitted entering the field of
play in or around the 89th minute, in contravention of FA Rule E3, but
denied a further breach that his behaviour upon his return to the
vicinity of the technical area amounted to improper conduct.

"However, this breach was found proven following an independent
regulatory commission hearing."

Both managers will serve their bans with immediate effect meaning Town
boss Wagner will be in the stands for his side's FA Cup replay at
Manchester City on Wednesday and their league game against Newcastle on
Saturday.

Monk will watch serve his ban in his side's match at Birmingham City on
Saturday.

I only just spotted the sevens squad by chance when I was leaving the Olympic

to add to the one I got with Siobhan O'Connor and her family the other day !

Off to the athletics tonight for super Satdi.

Been great so far, despite all the scaremongering in the press.

[LU] Uwe does Dallas

2015-08-04 Thread Wiggy
Officious site reporting that Dallas is now in on a 3 year deal with an
option for a fourth.

The Northern Ireland international, our seventh new addition of the
summer, joins for an undisclosed fee with the option of a fourth year on
his contract.

Dallas, 24, is capable of playing on both flanks and arrives with a
glowing reputation in the Championship after making his name in England
with Brentford, where he worked under head coach Uwe Rosler.

Rosler took Dallas to Griffin Park back in summer 2012 after a string of
award-winning displays with homeland club Crusaders as a youngster.

Dallas was named as the Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Player of the
Year and Young Player of the Year for 2011, earning himself
international recognition along the way at Under-23s level.

He was made to be patient for his chance at Brentford after making the
switch the following year, heading out on loan to Northampton Town to
gain experience, before returning to form part of their
promotion-winning team of 2013/14.

Dallas starred in the Bees’ impressive Championship return last season,
featuring 43 times and scoring eight goals, including their Goal of the
Season winner at Fulham, as they reached the play-offs with a
fifth-place finish.

He featured at Elland Road back in February this year, helping Brentford
to a 1-0 league win.

Dallas now becomes Rosler’s seventh summer signing so far – following
Charlie Horton, Lee Erwin, Sol Bamba, Chris Wood, Tom Adeyemi and Ross
Turnbull through the door at Elland Road – after passing his medical at
Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon.

The winger could make his United debut in Saturday’s 2015/16 season
opener against Burnley at Elland Road this Saturday (12.30pm).

Don't forget the right back playing at left back and the centre back at right

Sloth seemed to improve things when he came on at Reading the other week. Don't
understand either why he's not getting a start...

Not sure what happened to Zac Thompson? I saw he was with the u-21's the other
night, but thought he was on the verge of breaking through over the past year?

Don't get we wrong, I love that Redfearn has brought a lot of young 'uns in ,
especially that they look fantastic! A bit worried that we may knacker them out
with them playing most matches, but they're doing well!

I'm hoping he has more (some?) of a say with transfers when it comes to the
summer.

We're still playing with no width though, even with 5 in the middle. That was
apparent on Satdi, with everyone bunching centrally and no outlet out wide.
Charlie Taylor did his best on the left but he's not got the positional
awareness right now to be effective going forwards. Didn't help that one of the
5 - Murphy - spent most of the game chasing shadows around the centre circle.

Packing the midfield and hoping that one of them breaks forward to score -
which at least this season they're doing - still seems a negative formation to
me..

Adapting the system to fit the players would seem a better bet for the rest of
this season rather than watch us attempt the opposite. Hopefully come the
summer, Redfearn will be given an opportunity to update the squad to fit in
with the system he wants to play.

[LU] RE THAT shot by Morison

2015-03-18 Thread Wiggy
Frankly I don't care if Morison "puts a shift in" (sounds like sommat
from the Hockaday school of coaching that!). He's a striker and he's not
scoring goals, and has had far too many opportunities. His "shot" on
Satdi was for me the final straw. Took us ages to stop laughing.

Antenucci should be brought in alongside Sharp. At least he can:

a) Hold the ball up
b) Score goals (a requirement of a striker in my book)

Looking forward to Fulham tonight. Well, the list meet, anyway.

[LU] Haigh nicked in Dubai

2014-05-21 Thread Wiggy

From the beeb...

Ex-Leeds United managing director David Haigh has been arrested in Dubai
after the former owners of the club accused him of alleged financial
irregularities.

GFH, a Dubai-based private equity group, claims the alleged wrongdoing
is directly connected to their ownership and subsequent sale of Leeds.

Haigh, 36, was employed by GFH in December 2012 but resigned as an
employee earlier this year.

He strenuously denies the allegations.

However he was arrested shortly after landing in Dubai and has spent the
past three nights in custody on the strength of the allegations.

A close friend of Haigh's told the BBC: "David has done absolutely
nothing wrong or illegal. He is appalled to find himself in this position.

"However, as someone who knows Dubai well and respects its institutions
he is confident that the authorities will see these allegations for what
they really are and clear him from any wrongdoing."

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the arrest of a
British National in Dubai on 18 May 2014. We are providing consular
assistance."

GFH sold the club to Italian businessman Massimo Cellino in April.

This is one thing that Reading did very well that I don't recall us ever
doing in recent years. Even if they thought a player was going to f**k
off they rarely let a contract run down, but renewed it way before it
ran out. That way, they would always get something for the player to
compensate for the remainder of their contract.

[LU] Rich and Becchio

2012-09-24 Thread Wiggy
Watching Becchio reminds me a little of David Healy. If the ball is
played up to him in the air, then 8 or 9 times out of ten he'll play for
the free kick/clumsily fall over (delete as appropriate) rather than try
and win the challenge. That is *incredibly* frustrating to watch.

Seeing him fluster in the build up towards Poleon's goal reminds me that
Becchio isn't an instinctive finisher. He hasn't got the pace of someone
like Beckford to create chances either. He doesn't seem to have anything
in him which can change a game (*) unlike someone like McCormack, Diouf
- who was brilliant on Satdi - or Somma. When neither Diouf or Macca
have been on the pitch, we've struggled to create that many chances.

As Rich points out, the majority of his goals are reactions to moves
started by others, hence all the tap-ins and headers from 6 yards out.
All goals are important - I don't think anyone is arguing with that -
but he's not going to be the scorer of 20-30 *quality* goals, which is
what we'd all like to see.

Wiggy.

* - unless he gets subbed.

Folk seem to have forgotten Betty's request from a couple of weeks back
to trim their posts back to the list, particularly today:

> Absolutely not Dave its just that this list (and every other one I'm
involved with) has as
> part of its population a fair proportion of lazy twats who in the
main don't give a flying
> fuck for people on digest. There was a time when people saw
netiquette as de rigueur and
> saw it as an integral part of internet communication. A quick trawl
through this month's
> messages will show you that it is normally down to a few people who
clog up the system.
> There is only one sanction and that is to tell 'em to piss off but
the list being the list
> we don't want to do that. That leaves us with only one alternative:
TRIM YOUR BLOODY POSTS
> you know who you are!. 25% of list subscribers are on digest so it's
an issue for a lot

> of people.

What he said.

It's bad enough reading some of the shite on the list once, let alone 5
or 6 times. ;-)

PETE CASS (1962 - 2011) Rest In Peace Mate

[LU] palace

2012-01-14 Thread Wiggy

A quick summary from earlier today...

A good meet in the pub, though plod suddenly told the landlord to call
time at 215 with no warning. Big Al tried to persuade both plod and the
landlord to reconsider, but it was to no avail.

Slow out of the blocks from the start, we sat back and let 'em come onto
us far too often. One of those moments led to their goal. Was frustrated
to see us revert back to type and hoof it in the air, rather than try
and play football , aside from Clayton, Macca & Townsend who at least
tried to play football.

Playing it up in the air to the strikers can work if they're able to
hold the ball up and bring the midfield into it. Except we played
Becchio up front. His control was Palmer-like, managing to trap it
further than most can kick it. Anyone still disagreeing with Rich Walker
should actually try watching Becchio play for 90 minutes. Painful. I
think Forsell should be given a go with Macca next week.

After they were down to ten men, we should have gone for it at HT.
Palace left only 1 man up front, so we needn't have kept so many
defensive players on , such as Pugh and Brown. Going 3 at the back, and
also swapping Becchio for someone with slightly more control/pace could
have made the second half much more interesting. As it was, Snoddy was a
welcome sight in the second half, and got us our equaliser.

A draw seemed a fair result.

Having Snoddy and Townsend actually running at defenders was a welcome
sight.

Oh and SG should tell the likes of Brown & Pugh not to try blasting
shots from 40 yards out. They were in more danger of going out for a throw.

Back to lurkdom.
