It took him several seasons to recover his confidence. Revie played him
because he was expected to be good enough for international football but it
was unfortunately a case of being dropped in too deep just a little bit too
soon.

I recall he became a stalwart playing for many seasons at Bristol City
including their period in the old First Division. So really he had a good
career.

Yes but it was playing the keeper from the Juniors which really went badly
wrong.

I was at the game.
Firstly Revie was not too bothered about a long European run that season, and
the first leg was won so comfortably away that he thought a greatly reduced
team would at least get a draw at home. Putting the young kid in goal was the
big mistake. He let in four in a disastrous first half and his confidence was
completely destroyed. Tragic for him and for his career.

I could be wrong, but I think The Don tried an early version of squad
rotation and it badly misfiredI've a feeling he put some kid in
goal (John Shaw?) who never played again.

Re: [LU] Lierse SK

2017-01-18 Thread Damian Walsh
BTW this is in Wikipedia under Lierse SK:

"21 September 1971 is a day that Lierse supporters will never forget. Two
weeks earlier, Lierse had lost 0–2 at home to the far superior Leeds United
 in the first round of
the UEFA Cup .
Nobody expected that Lierse would win in Leeds, but 90 minutes later the
scoreboard read that Lierse had improbably won 0–4, and Leeds, the Cup
holders were knocked out."

[LU] Lierse SK

2017-01-18 Thread Damian Walsh
I was trying to find a match report for the Sutton game in 1970 when I
noticed a 1971 UEFA cup tie against Lierse SK.

We won the first leg at their place 2 nil, but lost the return at Elland Rd
4 nil. One way or another, quite surprising results. I don't have any
memories at all of this tie (there were more important things to remember
from 71)

Does anyone have any recollections, especially of how we got beaten 4 nil
at Elland Rd?
