LL:DDN: Reconciliation Week Forum

2001-05-15 Thread Dilum Dassanayake

Reconciliation Week Forum
PUBLIC FORUM:
TREATY - WHAT IT MIGHT MEAN FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS
Continuing the conversation on Reconciliation

UTS staff and students, and members of the public, are invited to attend a
forum between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to explore the
question of what a treaty could mean for all Australians in the 21st Century.

Speakers
Justice Elizabeth Evatt - Judge, World Bank Administrative Tribunal, former
Member of the UN Human Rights Committee
Professor Marcia Langton - Chair of Indigenous Studies at the University of
Melbourne
Dr Suvendrini Perera - Senior lecturer at La Trobe University, Melbourne

A 'Treaty' is often talked about with little reflection on what it might
entail, how the concept may have changed over the years, or how different
groups may perceive it. This forum seeks to increase awareness surrounding
the issue of a Treaty for Australia, both within the university and the
public of the issues involved. We invite your participation in the event.

When: Thursday, 31st May 2001, 2:00 - 4:00pm
Where: Tower Building, UTS, Level 4, Room 1.406

Further Information/Bookings: Dilum Dassanayake, Equity and Diversity Unit, UTS

LL:AA: appeal for support for Melbourne Uni occupiers

2001-05-15 Thread NIBS

At present, fifty-nine Melbourne uni students are facing expulsion
following a peaceful occupation of the Vice Chancellor's office on April 5.
One student has already been suspended for six months!

Those who participated in the occupation -- as part of a campaign against
corporatisation of education -- were invited by police to leave the Admin
building. Those that did so were immediately arrested.

All the occupiers now face disciplinary action, not for any particular
action, but for their collective participation. In blatant disregard for
natural justice, the uni is refusing to allow students any kind of
representation at the disciplinary hearing.

Today, a climate of repression and intimidation seems to be building. The
recent arrest of protesters at the Nike blockade for simply handing out
leaflets is another facet of this same intolerance. If the Melbourne Uni
admin is able to victimise the occupiers it will be one more nail in the
coffin of free speech.

Support for the Melbourne Uni occupiers is growing. The list of backers now
includes Senator Bob Brown from the Australian Greens, Dean Mighel from the
Electrical Trades Union, Craig Johnston from the AMWU, Eve Bodsworth
(President of the Melbourne University Student Union), academic Verity
Burgmann and Kate Davison from the National Union of Students.

To add your name -- or the name of your union or organisation -- call 8344
4808.

There will be a demonstration in support of the occupiers on Wednesday May
23 at 1 pm at Melbourne Uni.

LL:DDV: Rally in Support of Arnotts Workers

2001-05-15 Thread Jacob Grech

REMINDER - COMMUNITY RALLY IN SUPPORT OF ARNOTTS WORKERS

2.00pm SUNDAY 20 MAY

DALLAS BROOKES HALL, EAST MELBOURNE

This circular is a reminder of the community rally in support of the Arnotts
workers this Sunday 20 May at Dallas Brookes Hall, East Melbourne.

I urge all affiliates to ensure they are represented at this important
rally.

Also I would seek that the details of this event are distributed widely
through affiliates email and fax contact lists.

A large turnout of concerned unionists and community members at this rally
is vital during this period of the LHMU's campaign to save the jobs of over
600 Arnotts workers.

More information regarding the campaign is available at out website
www.vthc.org.au

If you have any queries regarding this circular please contact Jarrod Moran
of Trades Hall on 9659 3544
