LL:DDV: Skilled Six Defence fundraiser

2003-07-08 Thread Sue Bolton
FUNDRAISER FOR THE SKILLED SIX DEFENCE CAMPAIGN

The struggle to defend the Skilled Six and the unionists charged as a
result of the Johnson Tiles dispute is not over.

Eighteen AMWU and ETU members face charges arising from protests outside
the Skilled Engineering offices and the Johnson Tiles factory in 2001.
The protests were against Johnson Tiles’ sacking of 29 maintenance
workers and the outsourcing of those jobs to Skilled Engineering.

The unionists charged include a number of rank and file union members
from Johnson Tiles whose jobs had been outsourced.

It looks as though all except Craig Johnston are going to be part of a
deal which involves the defendants pleading guilty to the charge of
unlawful assembly. The upshot of this will be that the defendants,
including the Johnson Tiles workers who lost their jobs, will be fined
between $500 and $5000 each.

The Skilled Six Defence Committee has organised a benefit on Friday 1
August to raise the estimated $40,000 required to cover the cost of the
fines. We are asking you to show solidarity by purchasing tickets or
making a donation to the Skilled Six Defence Fund.

These unionists are guilty of nothing but trying to stop the loss of 29
maintenance workers’ jobs. Details of the fundraiser are below
