EDITORIAL

Last Saturday was an International Day of Protest Against Israel's
"Apartheid Wall", called for by leading Palestinian activist Dr Mustafa
Barghouti .The wall - or 'security fence' as Ariel Shannon's government
euphemistically call the solid slabs of concrete over 20 feet high, is a
symbol of the apartheid system being imposed on the Palestinian people.

The Israeli- Palestinian conflict is, as we all know, one of the most
contentious issues on the planet, and in it's own way exposes in
microcosm the central problems facing humanity. There are many shades of
grey in the escalating spiral of violence and reciprocal violence, of
war and oppression, and both sides have to make real concessions if
there is ever to be a resolution. Building 360km of fences and walls to
imprison the Palestinians at a cost of over three billion American
dollars, however, doesn't address the causes of Palestinian violence -
and indeed, looks set to intensify it as a whole nation is shut off from
the world.

The Wall will eventually shave off 14 percent of the West Bank, trap
274,000 Palestinians in tiny enclaves and block 400,000 others from
their fields, jobs, schools and hospitals, according to a critical U.N.
report released last week. Moreover, the world will have a new symbol of
oppression unrivalled since the Berlin Wall. As Australians face a new
wave of government harassment and media exploitation of refugees turned
back from our shores, spare a thought for Palestinians made to be
refugees from the world and sealed off inside their own borders.

Peace,

Rak Razam

LL:DDV: Conversations on Nonviolence

2003-11-13 Thread Anthony
*** Please forward this to your contacts and networks - thanks***

You are invited to Pt'chang's series of open-forum discussion nights

CONVERSATIONS ON PEACE AND NONVIOLENCE

Wednesday 19 November 2003
6.30pm
Marcus Atkinson,
International Peace Pilgrimage
With International guest walkers

Topic: On the eve of their departure for Roxby Downs and Japan, veteran
walkers from the International Peace Pilgrimage will talk about past
experiences on Peace Walks in Bosnia, Serbia, USA and Africa,, creative
nonviolence from around the world and the power of peace walks as a way
of creating dialogue, building hope, solidarity and resistance to the
global nuclear industry. An amazing and inspiring night of grassroots
nonviolence.

Wednesday 10th December 2003
Time: 6.30pm to around 8.30pm
International Human Rights Day
Jacques Boulet, Borderlands

Topic: On the 2003 International Human Rights Day, renown community
activist Jacques Boulet will lead a discussion on the origins of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, contemporary interpretations and
controversies, uses and misuses. Is there a 'bias towards western
values' and therefore the need to have a more careful approach to them
we refer to them? A lively and fascinating discussion for all those
interested in human rights, social justice and how they are applied.

Wednesday 21st January 2004

Jason Macleod,
Free West Papua Collective

little known history of popular nonviolent struggle in West Papua and

LL:DDV: UNITE Dob in a Boss rally 6th December

2003-11-13 Thread sp
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON UNITE DAY OF ACTION FOR 6th DECEMBER 2003

Dear UNITE supporter
At 12 noon on Saturday 6th December the most aggressive workers'
campaign in recent times will be launched in Melbourne. Employers who
are ignoring their legal requirements re paying award minimum wage
rates, implementing Occupational Health & Safety Act in terms of a safe
workplace, undertaking unpaid trial work, discriminating against staff,
or not paying legal minimum superannuation or penalty rates will be
'Named and Shamed' and a boycott campaign begun against them in the
run-up to the luctrative Xmas period. The campaign is centering on the
Brunswick St, Fitzroy coffee shop strip but will later extent elsewhere.

In the run-up to the 6th December, UNITE activists are visiting every
shop and pub on the street, organising workers (see enclosed leaflet)
and presenting bosses with a form to read and sign (cosigned by two
staff members) to verify that they are sticking to their legal
obligations as employers.

Those who do (already 12 have signed) will receive the enclosed sticker
on December 6th. Those who don't will either go on a Yellow Card List
(questionable behaviour) or a Red Card List (grub list). On the 6th
December casual and permanent workers and UNITE activists will meet
outside Black Cat Cafe, 252 Brunswick St, Fitzroy at 12 noon, and march
to ethical shops to present their sticker, and also to grubby bosses to
undertake non-violent direct action and 'out'/'name and shame' them.

UNITE was established two months ago by casual workers in Melbourne. It
is based at a Trades Hall office in Carlton South.

For more information or to help the compaign contact our office on
96399111 or ring our co-ordinator Billie Brown on 0400898336
