Subject: 36th Candle Light Walk - Treaty-Bill Of Rights - NO SA NUCLEAR DUMP - Friday 4/4/03 - 6.45PM - Around Government House, North Tce, Adelaide20
THE CANDLE LIGHT WALK HAS AN ON-LINE FLYER AT: http://www.country-liberal-party.com/pages/adelaidemob.htm Just a reminder that the 36th Candle Light Walk for Justice & Peace is on Friday 4 April, 2003, in Adelaide - starting at ex-daylight saving time: walkers gather from 6.45pm for a 7.15pm start. Feel free to use the item in italics below as a template for your publicity for the Justice & Peace Candle Light Walk in support of a Treaty & Bill of Rights. JUSTICE & PEACE CANDLIGHT WALK: "Australians can show their support for a treaty with Australia's Indigenous peoples. Candles will be lit for justice and peace advocating an Indigenous treaty on Friday 4 April, 2003, and every following first Friday of the month throughout 2003. Walkers can gather with candles at Government House from 6.45.PM for a 7.15PM start. The walk aims to protect Ngarrindjeri culture, spiritual beliefs, lands and waters, to stop any nuclear waste dump on traditional lands, and from affecting the environment via a Treaty & Bill of Rights." Candle Light Walks are held in Adelaide at Genocide Corner in front of Government House on the first Friday of the month. These walks express the concern of those who wish justice for Indigenous peoples. There's an opportunity to listen to Ngarrindjeri, and other Indigenous Elders speak on issues affecting their people. The microphone remains open for anyone to offer their thoughts on current issues, to sing a song, or to share stories of struggle. Please feel free to attend, and show support for a Treaty with Indigenous people, a Bill of Rights, justice and peace, as well as opposition to any nuclear dump in South Australia. Another monthly Candle Light Walk is to begin in Sydney, and soon Candle Light Walks in other States may follow. Don't worry if it will just be a small group of you to start with.... as Vincent Lingiari said: "from little things big things grow" ! Respect Indigenous people's traditional land and waters. Light a candle and walk for justice and peace. Join the Indigenous call for a TREATY. Respect Indigenous rights. Recognise Ngarrindjeri culture and spiritual beliefs. Look after the Coorong and its wildlife. Protect this unique Australian wetland. Look after Lake Eyre. Conserve this unique cultural environment. Protect its cattle and tourist industries. Have these gubs no shame? Don't they get it yet? How much more serious mental harm has to be caused here? When will they stop imposing conditions of life likely to destroy Ngarrindjeri, Arabunna, Kupa Piti and other Original Owners of the Land? Keep walking. Good poster too. -----Original Message----- From: Annie Pettitt To: The Bigger Picture Date: Tuesday, 7 August 2001 4:39 It's really exciting to see these community events happening. I was wondering if there is anyone that you know of in Victoria organising similar events. VCOSS is really keen to support something similar in Victoria and it'd be great to be put in contact with anyone here who might be organising or thinking abt organising something similar. One suggestion I have is to hold similar walks in all capital cities at the same time. I would be happy to organise that in Perth. ... I wish you well in your campain. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Dear Friends in Peace, Thank you so much to all of you who attended last week's Peace Vigil! It was a very beautiful, unifying experience, and really helped me to feel that hope for peace really is still burning brightly in our world! Those of us who attended have decided that we definitely will continue to meet on a weekly basis, at least until the war against Iraq is over (and I pray that will be NOW!!!). I have received Adelaide City Council approval for us to meet together at the War Memorial (and surrounding areas) each Sunday evening from 7:30-9:30pm, however I was not given sole booking rights for this time and place as that would have meant that I would have to pay Council $55 a week, and that is really not something which Anthony and I can afford at this time. Therefore, the agreement between myself and Council is that they are very happy for us to meet at the War Memorial (and surrounding areas) each Sunday, but if they do book it out to paying clients then we will have to work around these clients and make sure that we do not get in their way. They really didn't think that this would be too much of a problem for us, and I believe that they are right about this. The format which those of us who attended the Peace Vigil last week have decided to adopt for the Peace Vigils in the future is as follows: 7:30pm-Sarah and Anthony light the Peace Vigil Candle at the Reflection Pool behind the War Memorial. 7:45pm-We all gather at the Gates of Government House to join together in a walk around Government House. I have asked Patrick to write an explanation of his reasons for this walk, and when I receive this letter from him I will pass it on to you all. 8:00pm-We pause at the War Memorial and sing together the Peace Vigil Anthem which Kay has written for us. (As soon as I receive a copy of this Anthem from Kay I will forward it on to you all.) We then continue on our walk around the block and then disperse by around 9:30pm. I feel that it is very important that those of us who attend these Vigils all feel that we are able to contribute something of ourselves and our longing for Peace to the pattern of the Vigils. Therefore, please do not hesitate to suggest anything which you would like to add to our Vigils. As you can see, so far all suggestions and offers have been accepted by the group and these suggestions/offerings have added greatly to the over-all beauty and harmony of the Vigils. In keeping with this concept, it was suggested at the last Vigil that we also create a Web Page that all of the members of the Peace Vigils can send articles, artwork, letters, poetry, etc to. This is a wonderful suggestion and Patrick had offered to organise this for us, but now feels too busy to continue following this up. I will be endeavouring to do this, but have been flat out all week with work and plumbing (our sewage was completely clogged with roots and so I spent all of Friday attacking this problem with a friend of ours), and so I have not yet been able to organise the webpage at all. If any of you are interested in being the webmaster for this page in an on-going capacity, once I have got it up and running (with the massive assistance of Patrick's friend, who will be hosting it for us), then I would REALLY appreciate you letting me know, as this is not at all an area that I am proficient in! Thank you for your continued support of the Candle Lit Peace Vigils, and I pray that Peace will always dwell in your hearts and minds. Yours in love and peace, Sarah!:) "Unity comes through embracing diversity, not through enforcing uniformity!" :) Ngarrindjeri Land and Progress Association Camp Coorong P.O.
