Free CAD program

For those who use a computer to design what they make, here is a site where
you can get a free CAD program that is 2D only. They use this freebee to
entice you to buy the 3D version of the program. It is almost identical to
autocad (so I'm told by someone who uses it a lot). You do have to register
your name and e-mail address to use it. There is also a user manual that
you can download from the website as well.

Neat new dust collection set up.

2012-06-29 Thread curt george
Hello Everyone

After a lot of testing of this idea, I think I am ready to let everyone in on
the BIG trick.

This may be a big surprise to all of you. but Dust Shields do not work very
well on the Legacy..(shock and disbelief, Right? I'm not kidding here. ;-P. )
And to make things worse ,they block the view of the router cutting, so I don't
think the trade off is all that good.

I made a very simple jig that anyone can make in just a few min. that stops
most of the wood chips from flying around the shop. (note I said Most not all,
the very fine dust still gets away.but I am willing to deal with the trade
off's)

this jig is really only 4, 10-32 screws and a piece of 3x 18 vinyl window
screen. That's IT!

Now I've made 6 different types of dust shields, (two of them look factory
made. I was so proud of them, That was until I found out thay did not work. ;-(
. ) but only this simple screen trick really worked for me.

Here is the concept. The router cutting the wood makes lots of chips, a normal
dust shield only stops the chips/air/dust from moving in one direction, and
then it is forced into another direction, (its like tiring to trap a cyclone,
It just cant be done, well.)
I have to admit the better dust collection units use shields and vacuum in
order to try to stop the dust. And these do work, but at what trade off? Loud
dust collectors, hoses, and screens that block your view of the wood being cut.
It becomes a very real mess.
My concept, uses a simple hardware store vinyl window screen, this screen only
need to hang 3 below the router carriage under normal cutting operations. The
screen allows the air to pass through it, but stops most of the chips, which
then fall into rows/lines of wood chips under the Legacy, Its awesome! and
better yet the wood chips do not build up on or in the Legacy's alum. rails or
gears.(which was the hole reasion why I started on this project in the first
place.)

Now how did I do this? My Legacy has 4 10-32 screw hole in it to hold the
plastic dust shields that came with my machine. all that I needed to do was to
place a screw in each hole, then rap the screen around the carriage, (pushing
the screws onto and through the screen, holding it on to and under the router
carriage.)

NOW when I work in my garage, I have a fan blowing air on me, to keep me
cool,(ITS HOT OUT THERE!) but this air also blows the fine dust that gets
through the screen away from me and my work place, so the fine dust dose not
bother me at all.
But for you and your work space this might not work for you, but for the price
and the ease of using/making this, It is really worth the effort to try it for
your self.
Please let me know what you think.
talk to you all latter.

2012-06-29 Thread carsten stigers

curt pics are in order if you would. I have been contemplating something like
this for my 900 and have not finished my design. I am looking at a u shaped
bracket that mounts to the router base with roller blind material anchored to
either end of the machine. That way the material winds on each side protecting
the rails in the back and material drops to the floor. I already hang dollar
store shower curtains around the unit from the ceiling so that the material
does not shoot all over the basement shop. Plus I have mounted a piece of
screen over the floor drain so that I no longer clog up that.

The newer model do not have these screws. I picture would help us adapt the
idea. We do have four screws that you don't have that I think will work the
same.
