I know that you are right, Its all about supply and demand. The old
adage,What's one mans garbage is another mans treasure, also comes to mind. I
guess its the Old Yankee trader in me, (let the buyer beware) that keep me
looking for the better deal.( or making it for my self.)
I remember when I bought my 1000. people said that I paid to much for an
alum.junk. and that I should have bought ... X instead. Remember I jumped on
the band wagon when Legacy was the new brand to Phantom ind.
I hope the person who bought this turn table will be happy with his buy, and
uses it to its fullest. (perhaps they will someday be a member of this
group, and they can tell me them self's if the price was far for them or not.)
But as far as it is for me, that is still a lot of money in my book. ;-)

  Curt,

If you've been waiting for a rotary table, you might pay more. Some times
it's worth it to pay and stop looking. In fact, most rotary tables come with
machines, not separate. If someone were to sell an upgraded Z axis on ebay, I
bet it could go for more than the original price, too. In fact, I could say
the same for anything you can't get from legacy any more as an individual item.

But it is a chunk of money.

I don't think it is possible to do this from the side because first
wouldn't you need a rope moulding cutter profile, and second the leading or
trailing edge will be cutting into the piece depending on the contour.

Even the cnc would have to pick the profile out. It would take a while
and need some cleanup.

Re: Is this possible?

2013-03-28 Thread curt george
Woops! I forgot to add (the ovaries) that the reeding bit and template must
be used with the correct pitch from the Legacy's gear chart. it also might
be easer to cut from the side with a straight cutting bit and make the
profile first before cutting with the reeding bit.
I personally would use the lathe to get the shape before I do the side
cutting, but either would work, (I just think that the lathe would be the
faster way to do it.)

gota run.

Hello Brandon
That is a nice lamp. I can think of a few ways to make this, The first
(and easiest way ) being to use a template and cutting form the side, with
a large reeding bit.
http://www.magnate.net/index.cfm?event=showProductGroup&theID=146 like
s7656 would work nicely.
The other way would take some time to explain, and would need you to make
some special equipment. (I'm sorry that I don't have the time to fully
explain now.) but a CNC unit could do it, or a profile following floating
router could also do it.
But for the money I think I would make a template and use the side cutting
bit.

Have a great day.

I came across this lamp at Lowes this evening. I like the profile, but I
can't figure out how to do the rope twist on this type of profile. Is it
even possible? It seems lime you would need a template follower and a
swiveling base for the router.

Re: Is this possible?

2013-03-28 Thread curt george

Hello Brandon
That is a nice lamp. I can think of a few ways to make this, The first (and
easiest way ) being to use a template and cutting form the side, with a
large reeding bit.
http://www.magnate.net/index.cfm?event=showProductGroup&theID=146 like
s7656 would work nicely.

That appears to be made of metal or plastic, so chances are it was made with a
mold. Spirals with an arc can be made with a template and on the side instead
of on the top of the wood. A square spiral is pretty easy to make with the
machine, that you have in the picture I do not think is possible.
