I really think we have some photo's of that machine taken from an Ebay ad in
this group. I didn't add it to the history page...or is the MA series really
the woodchuck. If it is, it's on the page.
http://ornamentalmills.com/history/index.html Second machine down. Being the
woodchuck, would be like this machine...

for the group members eye's only. Please do not distribute the link in any

Re: double sided tape

2016-06-06 Thread Tim Krause
Thanks for helping the future search Bill.

To answer the first question, on a late night Sunday, your choice of double
side tapes that is appropriate to use can be bought at most places that have
hardware. Carpet tape is the simple answer. The details is there is two
kinds, one that is cloth reinforced and then simple vinyl type material. It's
carpet tape. The cloth type is outdoor type. Both of these types "sort of
work". I find the outdoor type can be too aggressive so you have to use less.
It is my personal preference of tapes to use. The indoor release better, but
tends to fail if you do not use enough. When I apply both type, I will
"burnish" or hammer the wood down to the waste board. With the cloth type I
will have a slot milled under the piece to be able to pry the wood up easier.
I also clean the mdf with acetone when there seems to be too much adhesive
residue in my favorite milling spot. This help with adhesion as well.

Now, if you have time or a woodturning supply place in town such as a Rockler
or a Woodcrafters, Woodcraft, etc, you have what is known as Turners tape.
They come in different strengths of adhesion. Some of the more aggressive tape
can be cloth reinforced, but that is not always true. The different types do
relate to the added cloth. I do buy the highest tack they have which is the
most expensive, It's properties are like outdoor carpet tape so you can use
less.

Another less thought of tape is found at the Sewing supply places like
Joanne's. It's seamstress tape. It's often found in a clear variety. It
works well generally, but it's so thin and high tack the releasing is very
difficult. You mileage will vary on this type.

That's basically what I know, and welcome to the group Phil.

Bill, I have to give the acetone a try as an accelerant. It makes a lot of
sense.

With the paper and white glue which works well but after you have to sand back
to the wood to remove the paper and glue am I correct? I would prefer not to
have to do that.

And I don’t know about over there but here super glue is like 99 cents a tube
in a craft shop under 2 dollars for masking tape and a dollar for Acetone Or
nail polish remover (Acetone is an alternative for accelerator if you didn’t
know) so for under 4 bucks I have a cheap holding method and it peels off no
sanding I like that.

Curtis and all,

I see it comes down to either:

I need it quick - Use the masking tape & Super Glue OR Use the Hot Melt Glue
(cheaper of the two?)

OR

I DON'T need it quick - I planned ahead -- Use the paper bag & white glue and
wait 'til it dries (Least cost of all options?)

I use paper joints on split turnings quite a bit. but for some reason for
mounting wood on the Legacy,

I like the hot melt glue approach. although having said that, Mike P. has also
recemended to me to try this masking tape/supper glue (CA Glue) idea to me a
while back.

I will be trying this idea out for my self. sometime in the not so off future.

Does anyone else use plain old white glue and a piece of brown paper grocery
bag (here in the USA) cut to at least the size of the smaller of the two pieces
being temporarily joined? Yes, you have to wait for it to "dry" - but the
wallet is willing to wait in many cases. (Plan ahead.)
Then when it comes time to separate the pieces, place a blade (chisel, knife,
etc.) at the joint and strike with a mallet. The paper is "the weak link".
