Yes Richard, I think the Wood Chuck is a more adaptable machine but is 
also less stable.  I have made many jigs and stabilizers to get a 
quality project from this machine.  Everything from 14 foot ropes to 27" 
diameter turnings. Things a modern Legacy could only dream of.  But as 
others have proven, anything is possible given enough spare part and a 
liberal amount "no matter what" attitude.  Hats off to the go-getters!

On the legacy the cross bars are your centers, head and tail, on
the Wood Chuck the head stock and tail stock are bolted to the
cross members and rise above them 6 inches to allow for the 12"
turn radius.  The top bars are only 9 inches apart so the 8 inch
stock I was using crowded the bit right into the rail.  I unbolted
the head and tail stock and re-mounted them to lean away from
where I wanted the milling to happen.  This center movement is not
possible on the Legacy, but since the Legacy is wider, this job
could have been performed in a stock configuration.  The bit
length would still have to be extended though, we still have to
reach the center.
