RE: Gazebo plans

2018-09-13 Thread Michael Kratky
Tracy,

I had build a gazebo similar but a little larger (12X18) some 30 years ago for
my then father-in-law in Schenectady, I used hand split cedar shingles for the
roofing over 2x4 skip sheathing and 2x8 rafters with decorative tails I
routered out, other than the pressure treated wood framing warping in the hot
summer sun and the multiple compound angles were the primary complications.
Back then compound miter saws were not available so I use a radial arm saw and
a hand saw for most of the compound cuts familiarizing myself with the
carpenters square to lay out the head scratching angles.

The fancy turned posts and balusters were turned on an old Oliver spindle lathe
with 8’ between centers that a friend of mine still has gathering dust and
rust.

Enjoy the build as some day when your time on this earth is running out you’ll
have fond memories of those times.

Cheers,

Michael in Northville, NY

Hello all,

Here are the rough plans to the gazebo I'm building. It should give you a good
idea of what I'm doing. I've got most the balusters complete for the main rails
now and will post pictures once I've sanded them up nice. I'm getting ready to
do the main posts and needed to finalize the top rail to know what space I have
on the posts to mill into.

Other than the size and rough dimensions, I haven't fully figured out what I'm
doing with the roof. My primary concern with the roof is strength with the
span I'm planning. We can get some good snow so I need to make sure it is
plenty strong to withstand many winters.

Feedback appreciated and very welcome.

Thanks,

Tracy
