A pen is made with a 1/2" roping bit and you would do a three start twist ( pitch / router bit dia = number of starts ).

The smaller pitch is used with a cove bit to make your stock round.  It's not the best finish. The flat bit has an okay finish, but it needs to be offset like our big machine. You can only run the bit down the centers.

With my Dream machine, I would go longer, and give the carriage a Y movement, (the 200 only cuts on the center line of the spindle.) I would also like to figure out a way to tilt the Z axis so to cut face-plate type of work... ;-)
