Re: Bone turning

2022-01-27 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Hello Everyone. (I just got home.)Tim those look pretty good. I cant wait to
see what and how you get this done.  What I've done in the past worked for me,
but Who knows? You may find a better way?   Keep experimenting and try
different methods. What you learn just may help a lot of people who want to try
bone turning in the future.
When I first tried to true up the bone disks that I cut, I used a dowel and my
collet chuck to make sure the bone disks were all at the very least at the min,
thickness that I was looking to make. I put the dowel inside the collet chuck
so the flat side of the bone would hit the dowel, the part that was sticking
out of the collet chuck was what I trued up. IT Did work.I was thinking of
trying another method to true up the bones, something like a small sanding disk
held in the tail stock of the lathe, and the flat of your bone disks, being
held in the collet chuck? Its slower then what I have been using, but then
again, it just might give you a better uniformity of your bone disks? Perhaps
something more like this video? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrFdPWwQDb4 )
There are no rules here, Like I said earlier, "TRY" everything you can think
of. You never know what will come from it? "A master has failed more times than
a novice has ever tried. "Don't ever give up, and Keep trying.

 Hey Bill, Curt and all,
So the bone turning I am working on is currently facing one side to get it
flat. I chucked up each piece in my Beall Collet chuck and faced one face very
successfully. I did the roughing with my Easy WoodTool rougher and finished
with a small skew I had. (not carbide) nor big enough but worked fine..Some
disks I had drilled with the hole saw and arbor set up others I had used a
diamond hole saw without the pilot bit.The bone turned extremely nice with the
rougher. I am now looking for a carbide skew if possible. Now I have the one
face flat I will need to determine my process for flattening and keeping the
discs even so I will be able to glue them together and create a handle. The
disc sanding process did NOT work as it may be too soft of backing pad as you
can see it become conical.
Stay tuned see pix below.

Hey Bill,

So my intent is to face them holding them in a collet chuck on one side then
trying Curt's

method on the second side by attaching several to a plate of sorts with hot
glue or some

other method and sanding several flat at the same time.

I still may work on the hole saw and pen barrel trimmer together to get the
first side flat,

then true them up just like Curts process.

Doing some tests currently.

Here's my start of the discs.

All need to be flattened yet but that's where I'm at.

If you find a good way to do that, Please let me and everyone know?  I use the
sander to flatten, what was not cut true.  I'm always looking for new ideas and
methods for the best way to get the job done.
Wish you luck, and cant wait to see what you come up with.

Bone turning

2022-01-27 Thread Tim Ziegler
Good morning LOM group,

Curts bone turning is a process I am trying to learn and is worth talking
more in detail about.
Time to change the subject and move on from lub's.

I have been communicating with Curt extensively on the bone turning that
Curt
has become quite a master at and has created some beautiful handles.
I am currently working on cutting discs using his concept and having some
great success. I have only accumulated some discs so far but continue to
move forward anxiously waiting until I have enough to turn a handle of
sorts.
Here's my start of the discs.
All need to be flattened yet but that's where I'm at.
I also recently found another source for buying deer antler,
and yes I'm sure some of you have bought from here already.
