Also for this New members, here is a link to our old archives.
https://ornamentalmills.com/turningaround/index.html  Just go to the photo and
click on it to start reading some of the old topic.   Its a lot of fun, and I
personally have used this for a good deal of info. or as+ a refresher for new
ideas. (sorta like a spin-off, Something Old becomes, New again .)The New
archives are not as easy to excise as the old one where ,(mainly due to the
size and amount of info, in it.)But I hope the goal can still be used by
others, who want to re-read or look up a topic that we have talked about in the
past.
I'm going to bed now, talk to you all more tomorrow.Have a good night.

discussions here over the past several months, I think it worthwhile to remind
everyone PLEASE keep any postings relative to the SUBJECT line topic.

We realize we all have things we want to ask about, contribute to The Group,
etc. - but PLEASE make them relaitve to the SUBJECT at hand.

If some of the discussions set your creative juices flowing and you want to
bring up an off-topic thought - feel free to do so when ever you want.  Just
PLEASE start it by giving it a "SUBJECT" line that will best represent the meat
of your input.

Our reason for asking this is that it will make it MUCH EASIER for a Group
member to search back through The Group's archives to find previous discussions
related to your topic.

Hopefully one of our Group members (Tim K., Mike P., or Curtis?) will chime in
and further discuss our Archives, how to search through them, etc. - and the
importance of the above request.

They will (hopefully) provide us with a hyperlink to the archives - making it
easy for all of us to access them and conduct searches.

One other admin request:  When replying to a subject - please cut off all the
"unnecessary stuff" relative to your reply/input - usually found towards the
end of the email.  A good example being:  "You received this message because

Re: Replacing the Legacy's lead screw

2023-04-11 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
 Hello Everyone.
This Lead screw replacement MOD is a Very easy project for any one to try.
It is not the End-All-Be-All of MOD's, but for small turnings this MOD can
really help you out.And for the price? ($11.01 for a 3' acme screw.) I think
it's well worth the effort.  And the really neat part is, I can go back in min.
to what My Legacy originally had.  For my Legacy 200 its only two sets of
set-screws that need to be loosened upso the leadscrew can be removed. And IF I
did the same thing on my 1000ex. it would be just as simple. (the acme screw is
longer, but only two set of screws are only needed to be loosened in orderto
remove and replace this acme screw.) the split nut is easy to make, and even
easer to switch form oneto the other.Something for everyone to think about? Why
not try it ???
I plan to try to get  into the shop tomorrow morning and do some more testing
on this MOD.If I do I will let everyone know more, If I cant, my next day off
is Sunday. And I promise, that I will be in the shop then. ;-)
I think, Legacy Slogan is true.   "Legacy, Where your only Imitation, is your
Imagination".
Have a good night.

Hi Tim

Yes I do own a 5/8-8 Acme tap.  Its the easiest part of the job.  just drill a
1/2" hole on the plastic.

Then tap it, cut in half, and then sand to fit, once fitting is done just drill
a 5/16" hole and tap 3/8" for the set-screw.

Its the same process for cutting the 5/8-4.  Supper EASY. ;-)

I see no reason it will not work. Yes you will have to explain how you threaded
that split nut too. I'd assume you have a

tap like many of us do for the larger one. Except you have 8 TPI instead of the
4 TPI

Hello Everyone.

"Well" I works! ;-)

Before We go to far, Its not been fully tested yet. but it dose work on the

test that I have done today.

This morning, I started by removing my 5/8-4 Acme screw on my Legacy 200.

And replacing it with a 5/8-8 Acme screw.

Now what this is suppose to do is,  It slows down the pitch by 1/2. What use

to give me 4 rev. pre inch, it now take 8 turns to cover the same distance.

So by using this idea, my smallest pitch will be being 1/2"  on the chart,

it will now be 1/4". (basically what ever the chart states, it will now be 1/2
of what the chart states.)

I started off my day, by making a new slip nut for the 5/8-8 screw, (very
simple

process, We can go over the process latter if anyone likes.)

Then I cut the new Acme screw to size, turned the ends to match the original
5/8-4

Acme screw on my 200.

And then putting the hole machine back together, in the afternoon.

OVER ALL it was a very quick job to do.

NOW the reason why I did this?  The Legacy was Originally made for making
furniture.

and other lathe type of work, The 4 threads per inch was prefect for large
spindles, But when

I started working on the small side of things with my 200, I found that the
pitches were just to

big. making a small rope on a Magnifying glass handle, The 1/2" pitch, did not
look right, It was

almost to large for the small spindle.

Now this idea is NOT new, But it is the first time that I have tried it.  Years
back We (a number of

people in this group) tried to find a better way to make a smaller pitch so you
could get a finer/cleaner

looking cut when using the drive motor and the Legacy's gearing.

As a general rule of thumb the more cuts pre rev. the cleaner the cut.

I found this Acme screw on Mc Master Carr web page. for  $11.00.
https://www.mcmaster.com/products/screws/acme-lead-screws-and-nuts/?s=acme+screws

I figured? what did I have to loose if it did not work?  I still have all my
original parts and it is a easy

repl
