The step by step process would be of great help to me and perhaps others on the board that have not tried template work on the LOM. Hello Denson.Im here if you need me.  The only thing you need to remember the templates are general. meaning they are not meant for fine control, so small details will not fully show up. Its not like a Vaga lathe duplicator (making exact copy of spindles.) It give you the general shape and control of the cut, for  general shape and for roping or fluting on a curve. If you like I can write up a step by step process, Its not hard, its just not the same process as you are use to. I know once you try it, You will find a hole new world in the way you make parts, and spindles.I wish you luck. Please let us know how it turns out. ;-)C.A.G.

Found a good use of my LOM this week on a job and it worked extremely well.

used 2 Rockler hold downs and to LOM mounting hubs to hold it in place.

Mounted my stops on the rails to control my length of the groove. I manually
controlled the Router and Carriage to minimize burning.

As you can see the finished result was good.

Re: Using the Template follower on the Legacy Ornamental Mill

2023-05-31 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
ONE LAST NOTE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfgtlxe7X9s  This is NOT a
Legacy video. but it clearly shows the power of the template and being able to
follow one in OT/OM turning.
Have a good night.

  Hello Everyone.
I just got home form work.
Before I forget I did note on the shims and or bushings that can be used to
make small changes in your template following.
Have anyone ever shimmed a grinder's, grinding wheel?  on the wheels arbor
there are normally a set of plastic round shims so you can get your wheel trued
up on a number of different sized shafts."Well" This is the idea. build up the
bushing on the template follower . This way when you get to the size you want,
you can remove one more small shim, making the follower  slightly smaller so
you can adjust for the finer(finishing) detailed types of cutting. This is one
method that I have used many times over the years.
Legacy made a number of adjustable template follower guides for there
larger/production machines, and latter sold this follower to any one who wanted
there new Z axis on there Legacy's.The MAIN IDEA is to gain more control of the
movement of the follower, (Again On my 200, I used a depth mic. to make the
distance change.) I am putting three photos of different ways that I have tried
to get this control done. ON the Front mounted template follower I used a
router circle adjustment screw/arm to work as my adjustment. ON the middle pix.
I used a set of large saw blades and a spring to maintain the tooth locking
everything in place.I also made a plexy glass adjustable follower (but I can
not find a photo at this time.)
Have a good night everyone.talk to you all more latter.

Here are some step by step photos. As you can see in the first photo the
templates are not very detailed, they need to be smooth and in the general
shape of what you want to make, but the fine details are not there, those will
have to be put in after the general shape has been turned.the 2,3 photos are
aligning the router with the center of the work piece/center of the machine.
form this point you lock the machine in place and then align the template to
the machine. The last two photos are the Legacy cutting form the side, 1/2"
straight router bit (a spiral bit cuts nicer then a straight flute carbide bit,
but either will work.)The Y axis needs to move freely so it is touching the
template while cutting. You will have to hold the router by hand while cutting,
Make light cuts down the spindle to get to the depth of cut you want to
make.NOTE: In My 200 video, I use a motor to turn the spindle. A hand crank
will work just as fine as the motor. BUT, You can lock the indexing head in
place and cut the blank locked in place as well, and just index the part over
and over to reach to final shape. You may find this faster and less nerve
racking at the very beginning of template work. Now the fun part. once the final
shape has been reached. you can adjust the template follower slightly to make
designs such as tapered rope cutting and any fine detail.NOTE: in the past I
did not want to adjust the template or follower after the set shape was made,
moving either of the two can greatly change the shape of the part, so you need
to be careful. (this is why I use a mic. on my 200's template follower.) but
you can do the same thing by using shims or making adjustable followers. (we
will cover this idea latter.)
PLAY as much as you can before "TRING" to make anything important to you. There
is a learning curve that needs to be explored.
LAST NOTE:  I am using these photos to help demonstrate the process. MY 1000ex,
No longer look like it did when I bought it. Since my Modifications to
it/adding linear rail.  My machine works the same way, but looks to different
form the original, I hope my showing old photos will help others, start
exploring the NEW Possibility'sthat template following offers. Good luck.talk
to you all more latter.
