Hi Everybody.

Still vertical just sold out lock stock and barrel and move to a new location
with a 36’ wide X 32’ deep 3 bay work shop where all my equipment is parked;
needs insulation, wall board, wiring, heat and AC so I have my work cut out for
me not to mention I’m scheduled for both knees to get replaced in 2 1/2 months
which will put me down for 6 months to a year depending who you talk to.

Will be looking to rent a place in Florida for the winter to recuperate if

Re: wood lathe

2023-06-24 Thread Owner
Some good advice from Ron Brown:

How To Become An Overnight Success

As a new turner, you are anxious to become as good as some of the names you
hear regularly; Nick Cook, Richard Raffan, David Ellsworth, Kirk Deheer, Mike
Mahoney, Cindy Drozda, and many more.

So, you develop a plan:

1.You buy a top-of-the-line lathe, a Powermatic 4224, a Robust American
Beauty, A OneWay 2436, a Laguna 2436, or something in that same category
costing between $5,000 and $12,000.

2.Next, you spend whatever it takes to get the very best lathe chisels,
Robert Sorby, Carter and Sons, Crown, Ashley Iles, Doug Thompson, etc., and you
need at least one of everything they sell in multiple sizes because great tools
make great turners, or so you’ve been told.

3.Then you must set up your sharpening station with a slow-speed grinder,
sharpening jig, and not one, but two CBN wheels.

4.You’ve watched untold hours of YouTube videos, including some of mine, so
you have tons of head knowledge under your belt. You have many ideas on how
this turning thing works; now is your time to shine!

Wait! You are still not a turner.

You are a student and you will be for the next several years. Granted, you are
a student with lots of nice expensive gadgets, but you are missing the one
thing you can’t buy: Time in the seat, or hours in front of the lathe. You are
a novice until you have put in the time, made the mistakes, tried something 10
different ways, made 100 pieces of the same thing, and made 10 different kinds
of turned items.

The wonderful thing about turning is that even our first pieces while we are
learning can turn out pretty good and it is just a given that our wives (and
most of our kids) will love whatever we make. But you are still a beginner.
That isn’t a bad thing, it is just a thing. Over the years I’ve met thousands
of folks that had been turning for 20 years. The problem was that they had one
year of experience 20 times over!

Since you can’t get around the time needed to become an overnight expert, a
master, or someone to pay attention to, just put in the time as a student to
acquire those skills, make those mistakes, and perfect those methods and
techniques. It is all part of the journey that will one day result in your
overnight success. Remember that wherever you go, there you are.

Have been turning for 60 years there are more lathes manufactures and models
out there than you can count, my advice is to buy the biggest and heaviest one
you can’t afford or you’ll regret it.
For me my go to lathe is a Powermatic 4224B could’d be happier as there's
nothing it can’t turn big or small it also has a built in vacuum chuck system
and indexing.
Mass is critical if your turning anything bigger than spindles.
Some fellow club members have reported issues with Laguna electronics as has
the local Woodcraft that sells them.

Have a Jet 1220 VS with stand I’m will to sell for a reasonable price with many
accessories I used to take on the road for demos but I no longer do that.

Mac,
The response was to the Crafted Elements mill posted by Craig.
I farm my slabs out to be flattened and sanded as I noted for $1 sq ft.
The Woodpeckers slab flattener I believe is the best but at $1500 total cost
its too expensive not including the cost of the router, bits and dust
collection, electricity, not to mention the dedicated space it requires.

Re: Could be a Legacy MOD?

Have been following this “slab mill” for some time. Most all the components
can be bought on Amazon for 1/3, the round router rails flex and the listed
size is too small for my slabs I mill myself 32” x 102”, to accommodate that
size the price doubles from the base package and he’s always out of them.

For anything up to 24” wide I have helical head planer for that and used a
flattening sled to take out the twists.

Also have a saw mill 30 minutes away with a Wood-Mizer combo flattening mill
and sander who charges me $1 sg ft to flatten and sand the slabs that includes
both sides.

Re: steam saw mill

2023-02-02 Thread Owner
One of the questions being steam I have is how did it operate in that climate
where it gets below freezing 6 months out of the year? They can’t fire it up
with out water in it or even leave any water in it under any circumstances.

Re: Music

2023-01-22 Thread Owner
In the winter of 66-67 I was invited by a long time friend who was attending
Lehigh University in Bethlehem PA to meet and see Simon and Garfunkel perform
including the Sounds of Silence at his Fraternity House, those were the days.
That same summer I saw them again at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Woodworking Shows 2023

2022-12-31 Thread Owner
Whether or not the Woodworking Shows are a go or not is beyond my pay grade as
I keep asking the same thing being a 3 day commitment for me not to mention
lodging and the 5 hour round trip distance to be a volunteer turning
demonstrator.

In years past when they had it we (the Western Mass Woodturners) never got
confirmation until the week before.

All the similar events this year I attended (2022) after recovering from 3
years of COVID shut downs the vendors were very scare and they are the ones
that make or break the events.

We are the 2nd scheduled show January 13-15, Baltimore is the 1st only a week
away.

Happy New Year,

Top of the morningTim,
No, like my LOM 1200 I don’t use it, anyone in the my neck of the woods
interested in them make me an offer.

Interestingly of all the Clubs I’ve belonged to over the years and all of the
symposiums I’ve attended all over the country not a single woodworker or
woodturner has ever mentioned the Router Crafter or even the Legacy Ornamental
Mill for that matter.

The Woodworking Shows are back on track for this winter after being shut down
for 3 years, I will be doing turning demonstrations at the one in West
Springfield Mass Jan 13-15 for the Western Mass Woodturners the only Club I’m
still active with even though I’m 2 1/2 hours away.

Re: Snow Plowing Unit

2022-12-16 Thread Owner
Tim,

Sure thanks for sending it my way got a reprieve over night with rain and wet
snow but the weatherperson says were on track for 20” in the next 24 hours,
have my 60” tractor snow thrower on the ready but it doesn’t like wet snow.

Wrapped up a hugh holiday craft show 3 weeks ago I shared with 3 other Western
Mass Woodturners club members, with the dismal economy people were reluctant
to spend over $25 so I’ve been busy making Gnomes which seems to be the crowd
favorite and cranking out animal shaped cutting boards (mostly pig shaped) my
farm raised wife requested for gifts.

Legacy 1200 sets idle, wasn’t able to sell the house this year due to the
skyrocketing mortgage rates so its still packed away.

9 (craft) shopping days till Christmas,

Unless giving them as Christmas gifts or selling them for under $25 you’ll be

Springfield, MA that cost $8 just to get in and a $500 Vendor fee very little
sold for anything over $25.

Re: Woodmizer has gotten into the lathe making business

2022-12-13 Thread Owner

Hi Timothy,
So many toys, so little time (and money).

The Woodmizer lathe attachment and what it can do has me thinking with 20 acres
of mature red pine and my property and a Timberking saw mill I could be a niche
market if it would work on my mill.

Still contemplating jumping into CNC but can’t decide on how big, how small,
how many axis, laser add on, and then theirs a water cooled spindle or not?

Christmas shopping done?

Good advice thank you, cut and drill all the blanks then put them aside for a
couple of months i like that idea best and any cracks could then be filled with
black ca glue and hopefully look like part of the wood

Olive is a great wood to turn.

Most of the pen kits use a tube inside the wood.

Olive can move a lot, and the tube is unyielding.

There are some glues that remain malleable that can reduce the chances of
cracking.

Something else you can do is drill the hole for the tube, but don't glue it in
for a month or so.

That gives the wood a chance to move after the loss of internal structure and
the heat from the drilling.

Nice job Tim. When I gift pens I have turned I try to match the wood with

the reason for the gift and/or the person I give it to. When I was getting
