Height gauge

2020-05-24 Thread jwb...@windstream.net
Does anyone know where Legacy got the height gauge for the carrier upgrade? I
have somehow lost one of the little buttons on mine (I have had them fall out
several times but most of the time I find them right away)

It has been a few years since I have used mine. But when I did I drew a circle
slightly smaller than the turning capacity of the machine, then made sure the
parts would fit inside it.

Has anyone calculated what are the largest sized pieces of 2x material you can
run with Pilaster mounts on a LOM? Assuming a 4-sided Pilaster Mount.
It appears to me that if you go to a pentagon shaped (or more) Pilaster Mount,
you will reduce the max size that will fit between the rails.

These custom parts were created for a member that wanted to make larger
pilasters. Although we suggested make a core box to turn them, he thought it
would be better to create metal mounts like Legacy’s but in the 5” and 6”
range. So I created these.

To turn the 6” pilaster trimming of the wood on the table saw was required. I
also suggested to flip the mounts for the inner rails to gain an extra ½ which
was all that was needed. I don’t have a picture of that.

I even did a quick study of being able to turn more pilasters at once. I looked
at 6 and 8 and decided the added cost of material and difficult level off
setting up the brake was not worth it. If the modern models had more space
between the rails and depth under the rails, the 8 sided model could have
worked, but again, it was expensive to build.

Another custom template that I made for the same member wanted a simple way to
mark his wood stock. He wanted to be able to see if he could get the most out
of his wood. So, I created this tool. It was good for up to 6”. The Legacy bolt
pattern was also easy to mark out.

In the case where the wood is a difficult shape is where this tool comes in
handy.

That’s it for today. I hope it gives some food for thought.

Re: Setup Blocks

2019-03-15 Thread jwb...@windstream.net
Thanks for the information.

I have the F.A.S.T. set. I love the magnets in them. I dislike the number of
blocks in the set. I use them for man things (More for a router than a band
saw) For about a year I have been considering a set from Infinity tools (I
think on sale they are about $100) I have just had difficulty justifying the
price. This set I have placed an order (Well will before most read this reply)

From: "MWF"

Sent: Thursday, March 14, 2019 11:50:30 PM
Subject: RE: Setup Blocks

The Carter ones are called their " F.A.S.T.™ Fence Alignment System Tool". Yes,
they have a magnet in each and can be stacked together. The magnets attract
each other to make them stay together when stacked. The magnets are
strategically placed - next to a vertical slot/channel. This allows the magnet
to flatly adhere to the blade - while the vertical slot accommodates the
offset/protruding teeth. Without the channel, the setup block would skew out -
and not give you the proper alignment for the blade to the fence.

The Carter F.A.S.T. combo pack includes 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" bars.
All 5 stacked together will give you a max thickness of 1 7/16".

On the other hand, the iGaging "set" (from ChipsFly.com) consists of 15 blocks
- from 1/16" thru 3" - and stacking them will give you even more, a LOT more.
The two "drawbacks" with these (the iGaging set), as mentioned by Tim and
evident by the above info:
1. No magnets - so they won't "stick" to a band saw blade or other types of
blades.
2. When used to align fence on a band saw: No slot/channel in them to
accommodate the protrusion of the teeth on the blade.
(If you never plan to use them on a band saw, then number 2. is of no
consequence.)

Both sets of "blocks" are well made and will server many purposes in any shop
and with many tools. If you don't plan to buy both sets, do your homework and
get the set that will meet most of your setup needs. If cost factors in: The
iGaging are listed as $59.95 and the Carter set is listed as $49.95. Neither
price includes taxes and shipping.

I hope the above is useful.

To All,

I noticed that Legacy has now posted router bit profiles in the CNC portion of
their website. Does this mean we can now create our own router bit templates
since they no longer make the Design Kit available for sale?

Our local library has a laser engraver/cutter available for public use that
would work quite well for this task.

Just asking.

Has anyone made a sign with the Legacy. I'm asking about something like a park sign. Someone at work want me to engage a sign on cedar. He wants the letters to be about 4 inch. He gave me a pantograph where I would make the letters one by one. Each time I finished a letter I would have to move the wood. I was wonder about having the wood laying flat on the Legacy and have some board off of the front parallel to the Legacy. You would have a sentance on the board, place the router at the beginning of the board and on the first letter. Each letter would have a drill hole the size of the router bit so that when the router was plunged, it would be in the hole and the pointer would correspond to the first letter. Start the router, follow the letter, when down, stop the router, move it to the next letter and place in the hole. Basically each printout would be printer twice, one for the piece being cut so that you could drill a starter hole and the second would be the letters to be copied. Does this sound like it would work or has someone tried something else that worked. I need to get the sign done before the end of September.
Thank you.
