Re: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2011-01-06 Thread Tim Krause
Here's mine.

One button for on and off. I really like having the zero button ( green 0 )
spaced away from the rest of the buttons. I never have a fat finger moment
with this arrangement.

I've looked at shars.com and they have a similar appearing unit but I don't
know for a fact if the position is stored when turned on and off. That would
really suck to loose the numbers or to have to turn the unit on or off
manually. I'm really surprised that the display would burn the batteries out
so quickly if left on.

I've had my eye on this one but again I don't know if it stores the location
when the unit is turned off or if it has an auto shut off. I never bought from
these people before but I like what I'm seeing with the brackets included, a
spare battery, water/oil proof and 1 year battery life. I get about 6 month on
mine.

RE: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2011-01-05 Thread Grant Lasson
I've used Wixey DRO's on my table saw and on the x-axis of my 1000EX. It
looks like Barry's got a new entry:

http://www.wixey.com/remote-planer/index.html

that would work well for a z-axis. Actually, I think I'll email him and ask
if the position sensor can be used on his standard track. I've been
patiently waiting for him to bring out a remote digital readout function.
Currently, I can't see the readout most of the time I'm cranking the mill.
That really limits its utility to work closer to the spindle.

Anyway, Wixey's stuff has worked pretty well for me. He only resolves to
0.005" but I don't think that will be a problem for most OM situations.

800watt makes me nervous everytime I buy something from him. The biggest
problem is zero communication. If you have a problem assume you are out of
luck. It does not matter how much you have spent with him. I had problems
with missing items, damaged in shipping, poor fit and even trying to get him
to send me an invoice for multiple items. Of all of my purchase, I've only
received one response and that was an invoice so I could pay him. All
pre-sale questions and post sales questions which needed problem resolution
where ignored. So, buyer beware. I do see his feedback is looking better
than it has been for a long time and they do a boat load of sales so maybe
communication issues have been resolved.

Back in 2005 there was a note about a scale designed for planers available
from digi-kit. Now I see they have move well beyond the inexpensive
consumer market kits. I bought one of those and they looked identical to the
picture just shown and exactly what legacy was using at the time. The odd
thing is my scale does have an auto shut off and it remembers where it was
when turned on and off. But it still goes through batteries when not in use

RE: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2011-01-05 Thread Grant Lasson
Tim,

I noticed that on some DRO's the green button is for "ON/0"and the red
button is for "OFF"--that's the kind I have. On others the green button is
for "0" only and the red button is for "ON/OFF". I would prefer that
arrangement quite a bit.

In any case, I immensely prefer the light blue/dark blue button style DRO to
the black body version. To me, it would be worth the risk of dealing with
800Watt.

RE: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2011-01-05 Thread Grant Lasson
I have to agree with Tim. I've only ever purchased DRO's from him-- 4 or 5 I
think. The first time I was really nervous. No communication whatsoever.
Nevertheless, the DRO showed up and worked just fine. I haven't worried
about the others. Given the feedback, I know I wouldn't buy anything
complicated or expensive from him. I reasoned that I was only out ~$25 if he
screwed me.

RE: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2011-01-04 Thread Grant Lasson
#1) No. The digital scale remembers where it is at all times. The only thing
that alters that is when I have to change the battery.

#2) No. It won't turn itself off. However, the display draws a very tiny
amount of power so it doesn't really matter very much if it is on or off.

Barry Wixey confirmed this the me in several emails. It uses quite a bit
more power to remember its position than it does to display the position.

It sounds to me like you have a scale much more like the first one I
purchased and use on my woodrat. Turning it on or off resets the position
every time. Also, there is no incremental mode on these scales. I use
incremental mode quite a lot so that wouldn't be acceptable to me on my
legacy.

If you want to hold a certain absolute position while changing the battery,
the best procedure would be to take the mill to the "zero" position before
removing the battery.

A few questions aobut the digital scale:
1) if you turn it off does it re-zero or have the number you left it
at?
2) does it have auto turn off feature or if you forgot to turn it off
does it stay on forever?

I will try to ad a picture of mine which when turned off turns on at
zero every time and does not have auto off feature whixh means of
course i forgot and it stays on overnight.

Re: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2010-12-14 Thread Sanat
Grant, thanks for showing us how you did this. I see that Ebay Seller
800watt has these digital scales available although no 16" ones at the
moment. I am going to ask him/her if a 16" is available as there may be
several individuals here who may be interested.

Search for "*Y-AXIS VERTICAL DIGITAL SCALE" *on Ebay.

thanks again Grant for sharing

Adding a y-axis digital scale was one of the easiest upgrades I've
made to my 1000EX. I took an aluminum angle with the same depth as the
rail and attached it to the non-drive side y-axis rail using the
standard locking tabs and brass thumb nuts. I created a threaded post
on the locking tab by inserting a socket head screw backwards from the
way it would normally be viewed. There is just enough room for the
socket head to fit inside the rail. The final effect here is that the
aluminum angle iron can be removed without tools. I also rounded the
outside corners of the angle iron with a file.

All of the pertinent assembly details are visible in picture IMG_1915
which is an end view.

I used some available plywood as spacers to add the appropriate
elevation to the digital scale. I think it was left over from drawer
bottoms. Attaching the digital scale was easy. Just tap the angle iron
with the appropriate thread size and use the screws to attach. It's
important that the scale be parallel but it's not difficult to get setup.

Attaching the scale to the moving carriage was also pretty simple. I
didn't want a big ugly bracket ("BUG"), so I bought some Lexan and
machined it as my bracket. The best view of it is in IMG_1922. I
shaped it to fit the existing holes on the carriage and used slightly
longer screws to attach. Under normal operation, the bracket is almost
invisible--I like the clean look.

The digital scale has four threaded screw holes in the back. These are
tiny (4mm?) screws that might take some looking to find. The length
must be just right because if they're too long, the scale won't slide.
Once you've got that done, you're ready to go.

A few thoughts on the choice of digital scale. I used a 16" scale that
measures almost 21" end-to-end. I did that so I could use the full
width of the mill without restraint. I also made sure that I got a
"vertical" reading scale because I didn't want to keep tilting my head
to read it. Finally and most importantly--make sure the scale you get
has an incremental and an absolute mode. Some scales have only
absolute (like the first one I bought for my Woodrat). On the y-axis,
incremental will be your best friend but you won't want to lose your
absolute reference point.

I got the digital scale off eBay. No warranty or anybody to stand
behind it. On the other hand, it's the same model that Legacy gave me
with the z-axis and I got it for about 1/3rd of what Legacy charges
for the 6" model. I think the seller was "100Watt"

Good luck,

Grant

Re: Y-Axis Digital Scale

2010-12-14 Thread Craig Turner
Thanks Grant,

The pictures are excellent and I can relate all you say to the
pictures - being as accurate with the y-axis has its place just as
much as depth. Much appreciated - this is definitely something I must
pursue. Thanks again.
