Man this sit is so cool!!! I gots to get me one of them! You probably
thought about this but you could use a photo laser tachometer to verify
your rpms, I use one on my lathe and it works great. Just be careful with
the import stuff, some of them are garbage. Thanks for the pictures.

Re: Spindle Drive set up.

2015-12-28 Thread CURTIS GEORGE
Hello Harvey
I would say anywhere form 88 rpm to something like what Ive been running MINE,
let say under 300 rpm.

By the way, I also use the spindle drive motor on my Legacy for sanding as
well.

C.A.G.
P.S.
The only thing you do need to take a look at is, if your Legacy has the
bushing, the motor might cause the plastic to ware out quicker due to the extra
heat build-up. But the newer units are all ball-bearing head-stocks,

Thanks

Not bad with a corbox bit either so good in fact very little if any sanding was

Curtis,

I like it, now all I need to do is sell my extra General 26020 VD Canadian made
wood lathe to make room in the shop for the 1200 LOM which I had to put in
storage to make room for the Powermatic 4224B I bought 2 ½ years ago, anyone
near upstate NY I’ll make you a deal.

Hello Everyone.

This is a topic that I keep bring up, but no one ever says anything about it,
So I thought I would try one last time. ( This year.)

This is the easiest modification you can make for your Legacy,

Its the missing link from what we Have, to what we thought we bought form
Legacy, all those years ago.

You get a much cleaner cut, (faster too, than using the gears.)

You want the Legacy to do some template following? "Well" This is

a must...( if you want to try following a template and cutting from the side of
the spindle.)

What I did today was play with some rough cut poplar, Yes there is some
spalting and some rot. but this is to show you the ability the the concept.

I found out years ago, before I made my motor drive, that if I spun the spindle
twice (or more ) for every one turn of the drive handle I got a much
better/cleaner cut.

The motor dose not need to spin fast, mine has an adjustable speed, ( a 110 AC
motor.) but I run the spindle at appx. 300 rpm (I'm just guessing? but its much
slower than what I normally run my lathe at...And much faster than what the
Legacy will turn the spindle using the gears.)

If I used step pulleys, I could run at any speed I liked, AC motors are cheaper
to buy/find. and you don't have to be an electrician to figger out how they
work.

You don't need the spindle to go fast , the cutter dose the work, But the more
RPM's the spindle makes per cut, the cleaner the cut looks. Its just that easy.

Even if you don't have a motor drive, this method speeds up the turn rate, and
makes the spindle cut, look much better/easier...

AND NO this will not help you out with Roping and fluting. (directly ) But it
will give you a much better spindle to start with, So in that mind-set it dose
make your roping and fluting better as well.

You know that funny thing here is? I did not come up with this modification.
Legacy did. BUT for some reason, they put it on the woodchuck, and not the
Legacy until the model 2000 and 2200 were made. and then they never talked
about it. Its the Best keep secret in town!!!

OK I'm done with my rant now!

If all I hear this time ,is the sound of crickets chirping to my message .

I will let this topic die out. (at least for this year,) ;-)

I really think this one, is the icing on the cake.

Have a good night everyone.

Re: Spindle Drive set up.

2015-12-28 Thread Harvey Matyas
Hi Curtis

How fast is fast? If you could control the motor, what would a good range
for RPM be?

Thanks

Harvey
