Re: [LegacyUG] Fan Charts Custom Printed

2006-06-26 Thread Cathy

A Fan Chart is simply one (nice) way of presenting Direct-line ancestors.
Take a look at the Pedigree Chart for 8 generations. Put the pages
together and see where the gaps are.

If so, let me ask this: How were you able to verify you had everyone
necessary to fill the chart? I -think- I have gone back eight generations in
every direction, but short of checking each direction with a pencil and
paper, is there a "Legacy-way" to verify you have filled in all the 'slots'
needed for a complete chart? And perhaps make a list of empty slots so you
can work doubly hard to fill in before Christmas?

Hope that was clear- I looked at tagging but that is not telling me what I

Hi Brian

Thanks for your reply.

The MyTrees works fine but I only received one CD in the package # ALA3 3005
215 (the other packages in the store also only have a single CD) so when I
am promted to insert the Legacy CDs nothing happens.

There is a GeoDB.gdb file of 434.572KB on the disc, is this where I find the
1 Billion names.

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Tree Ver 5

2006-06-26 Thread Support
Myrna,

IMSI Software did produce two Legacy products - Legacy v4 and Legacy v5. I
know for sure that there are index CDs with the v4 product as I have a copy
of that, but I don't have the v5 product, so I don't know for sure if CDs
are included.

It's quite possible that they're referring to the search features in Legacy
v5 - "Search Internet for Current Person" and "Search the IGI", which would
give access to one billion names.

We don't have a copy of the v5 release by IMSI and I haven't seen it in the
stores around here. If I can find it, I'll check it out - unless someone
else has the v5 release and can report back to us.

What they're offering is a bit different than what we sell in our Online
Store.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Uncertain of relationship

2006-06-26 Thread Cathy

Hi Nick,

I also enter uncertain people as unlinked individuals or families.
I also document in notes for both people of the possible link.

For my own benefit, I sometimes link them in adding 'Probable' or
'Possible' to the Given Names.
When doing a report for others, I unlink these people - they're easy
enough to find by searching on the Given Names for <'P>.

I have only had a quick look at it in Open Office and it will open the file
but iI found it needed to be renamed from a ".fdb" to ".mdb" before it would
open. I used the quickstart and then Database and selected Access as the
file type. It is necessary to save it as an ".odb" file and it opens itself
automatically.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do you record someone acting as a witness? Changes in County boundaries?

2006-06-26 Thread Sandra Williamson

I also do something similiar.
I have create an event called Gravesite and record the information in
the following way

Event name: Gravesite
Event Place : Eaglehawk Cemetery, Eaglehawk, , Victoria, Australia
Notes
"Location Section: MON G, Grave Number: 34

Transcription of Headstone
This Plaque had been laid to commemorate / the arrival from Cornwall
140 years ago / on the SS Great Britain 24 Dec. 1861 of / Martha
(Carbis) / Died 1882 / John Bassett Died 1868 / Both are Laid to rest
here. / They laid the foundation for our future. / Remembered by the
descendants 20 Jan. 2002 / At a Family gathering in Eaglehawk.

Interred at this site
    John Bassett
    Martha Bassett"

If there is no headstone I just put No Headstone instead of
Transcription of Headstone.  This has the effect of standardizing the
information in the event and the look. This standardization looks good
in reports and is also clear to non-geneologists.  In somecases I also
attach a photo of the grave site if I have it.  It also helps if I go
the cemetery and I can print off an Event Report for a paricular
location do some research and/or take photos.

Hi Dave, in Legacy I currently only use the grave marker information as a
source for facts/events (i.e. St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, Ogdensburg,
Sussex County, New Jersey, grave marker for William C. Nestor,
photographed

I
include the inscription in the detail text, but do not attach the photo in

The reason for not attaching the photo is that the citation detail is
copied
and pasted as a source for several events/facts and I thought it would be
very redundant to paste the photo mutiple times. Instead, I import all my

photos (pictures, documents, and grave marker phots) directly to TNG.
Each
cemetery has the all the photos where I have them available. I also put
the
transcriptions there and attach to the appropriate individual(s) in TNG.

For transcriptions where I do not have a photo or where I found the photo
at
FindAGrave or elsewhere on the net, I merely list the transcription and
then
create a link to where the photo and/or transcription originated. It
probably makes better sense if you check out a few of my cemeteries
online.

For all photos I own, I scan them at an archival size and place them in
the
appropriate folder on my hard drive. Then, I create a web-sized copy of
them and place them in a single folder (sorted alphabetically by last
name)
to be uploaded to TNG. Therefore, I never have to worry about long file
names caused by them being buried in subdirectories.

I hope this gives you some ideas. There are lots of ways to do this, but
this has worked well for me (aside for the tedium of having to make two
copies of every photo!).

So do you record 'headstones' in Legacy? If so, how?

I'm going to (I think) use Legacy events, attach the picture to the

  source

and then manually link them in TNG to the correct individual. I think

will get me there with the least amount of (re)work.

But to do this I need to move my TNG Headstones directory to my Photos

  If

Start Legacy; click the "Legacy Home" tab just below the menu bar; on the
right side of the screen see the box labeled "Updates"; click the update

Re: [LegacyUG] Uncertain of relationship

2006-06-26 Thread Susan Daily

Nick,
Like Glen and Ivy, I have entered the second family group into my
database, but they were unlinked. Remarkably, a granddaughter of one
tree married the spouse of a granddaughter in the other tree. (One
wife died young.) I don't think the spouse knew the two women were
related - maybe they were 5th cousins. But that ended up joining my
two trees, just not in the way I wanted! (I think the two heads are
2nd cousins, but Irish records are non-existent for the time period I
want.)

When I do publish a family report on this family (Murphys,
coincidentally, Ivy), I plan to show the cousins and their
descendants, too, as they are descendants of the same
who-knows-how-distant unknown ancestor. One cousin stated in a
depostion of a Civil War Pension file that he knew the other back in
Ireland, and that they were distantly related.

So, Nick, I'd suggest going ahead and entering the data. You might
start to find coincidences in the two families that might help you to
connect them at some later date. Good luck!

The Article on putting your family file on CD with a copy of the
Standard Version of Legacy is on the Tips page Here:
http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Tips.asp

You can create Individual Reports for everyone in your file. Reports >
Report Menu > Individual. click the Record Selection button beside the
name and select everyone in the family file. You might try a sample for
one individual though to see if the report has what you want. I doubt
that it will include "every" picture but the sources and notes should be
there.

You do not import it, you open it.

First, I would recommend you play with a copy of your database, not the
real thing.

Start Access and click File|Open. At the bottom of the Open dialog
change Files of type to All Files. Then navigate to the proper folder
and select the Legacy database (*.fdb) that you wish to open.

You can make your database unusable if you don't know what you are
doing, so heed my warning and play with a copy of your database first.

feel that they will link one day and the other one is because I have two men
born in the same year both called Edward Dorrell and both born in the same
town, in both cases when I find some new information the first place I look
on Legacy is the Index duplicates show up very easily there. When I do get
the final answers I can either link or delete, incidentally I also have
added notes to the loose families just in case it is one of my children that
finishes my work.

Nick,

Until I can confirm a relationship, I enter the person(s) as unlinked. If
you have a family group Mother / Father & children, etc... Start by entering
one unlinked individual and build that portion of the family around that
individual.

When you can confirm the relationships, you can just link the families
together. I have 7 trees. 6 of the trees have 2 or 3 individuals. I found
marriage announcements of family members. I know they are family as they
are from the right area and have the right surname, but I don't have the
bride / groom or their parents in my database. I am leaving in a couple
weeks to visit this area and plan to contact the family to see which
ancestor is the common connector.

Hope this helps.

Also: To see how many trees you actually have in your database, click on
View / Tree Finder... And once in Tree finder, click on the refresh button.
Unless you have known individuals that are unlinked for a specific reason,
you should only have one tree.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do you record someone acting as a witness? Changes in County boundaries?

2006-06-26 Thread Gail Rich Nestor
Hi Dave, in Legacy I currently only use the grave marker information as a
source for facts/events (i.e. St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, Ogdensburg,
Sussex County, New Jersey, grave marker for William C. Nestor, photographed
by Marghie Nestor Howard, 16 Jun 2004.). This includes the master source
portion (the cemetery info.) and the citation detail (the stone itself). I
include the inscription in the detail text, but do not attach the photo in
Legacy.

The reason for not attaching the photo is that the citation detail is copied
and pasted as a source for several events/facts and I thought it would be
very redundant to paste the photo mutiple times. Instead, I import all my
photos (pictures, documents, and grave marker phots) directly to TNG. Each
cemetery has the all the photos where I have them available. I also put the
transcriptions there and attach to the appropriate individual(s) in TNG.

For transcriptions where I do not have a photo or where I found the photo at
FindAGrave or elsewhere on the net, I merely list the transcription and then
create a link to where the photo and/or transcription originated. It
probably makes better sense if you check out a few of my cemeteries online.

For all photos I own, I scan them at an archival size and place them in the
appropriate folder on my hard drive. Then, I create a web-sized copy of
them and place them in a single folder (sorted alphabetically by last name)
to be uploaded to TNG. Therefore, I never have to worry about long file
names caused by them being buried in subdirectories.

I hope this gives you some ideas. There are lots of ways to do this, but
this has worked well for me (aside for the tedium of having to make two
copies of every photo!).

I'm not sure if this answers your original question, but I see you have
posted to the TNG list where the gurus there can probably better answer your
technical question.

Hope this helps!

So do you record 'headstones' in Legacy? If so, how?

I'm going to (I think) use Legacy events, attach the picture to the source
and then manually link them in TNG to the correct individual. I think that
will get me there with the least amount of (re)work.

But to do this I need to move my TNG Headstones directory to my Photos
directory. No problem but since my directory structure is broken down by
State - County - City - Cemetery name I exceed the 64 character limit. If
I

can't get that changed I'll regroup.

Hi Dave, well I wouldn't say that I could publish on paper without too
much
editing! I definitely would want to start from scratch and build a case
or
story by copying stuff from my event notes and then pasting them in a
word

processor. That's just me.

I do sort of put my event notes in sentence form. However, if I were
writing a sort of genealogical proof article (either to address
conflicting
evidence or to correlate several bits of indirect evidence to prove
kinship), I would carefully craft my prose as I reexamined each source
and

the information it contained. The text would combine the bits in pieces
in
the order that best told the story, very clearly and very concisely.

This is *way* different from database formatting where standardization is
important, as is the chronology of events.

All I can say is, all my data from Legacy goes to TNG now except for my
research notes, which contain leads that are unverified and other
personal

e-mails and such. Everything else is in TNG just as is it in Legacy.

I wish I could say you wouldn't have to do much re-editing, but just
focus

on fleshing out more of the "story" in event notes and in general notes.
Good luck!

Yes, I understand that. But I was hoping for a way of seeing multiple

Brothers Keeper?)
In fact, I'm continually switching the starter person (rarely it's myself).

in your case it would be possible

Alas, no, he was a cousin, so that takes precedence.

The relationship "in law" isn't a genetic link and so the "brother in law"
relationship won't show up. But using the relationship calculator for the
husband and wife you do get both relationships - wife and 1st cousin.

I don't think that there is. Assuming that you have set the relationship
calculator with yourself as the starting point then the relationship to you
will always take priority. It can always be temporarily set to someone else
and switched back as required though. Eg. in your case it would be possible
