The easiest way currently to pick them out is to export Name and Death Date - and Spouse(s) (or AKA if you put married names in the AKA) - to a csv file (use the Name List - Print) Open the csv file in Word (not Excel - dates are more complex in Excel) Then search for each month. You can enter the names or cut and paste them to on your memorial calendar list as you find them. Re: [LegacyUG] Another source question
Hi Myrna, just open up a master source, start editing it, and click Save. It will ask you if you want to "apply changes to ALL references of this master source" or "apply the changes to a NEW copy of this master source." Choose option B and you will have your new source. This does come in handy with different census years in the same county. Re: [LegacyUG] primary scource and pedigree charts
Hi Naomi, any facts for which I have paper back-up (kids' birth certificate, etc), I cite paper that as my primary source. Although you would be considered a primary source for a birth if you attended the birth, keep in mind that you are recalling this fact at a time probably much later than the event occurred (not that you're going to get the date wrong!). To me (although this seems to be a silly example), one is not a primary source for one's own birth. Although you were present at the event, you would not be able to recall the date without being told. Therefore, a birth certificate is more appropriate as a primary source. For the vital dates of cousins and such, I typically rely on an e-mail, conversation notes, letter, or whatever, as documentation. In Legacy, I cite the name, the relationship, the means of (and date of) communication. None of these communications are primary sources for a person's own birth, although they could be primary for their own marriage. Again, you sort of run into the question of "how long has it been since that date?" The best way is to go and get all those marriage certificates, etc., but then again, we usually do not need to prove these relationships and dates with original docs. unless they are needed to clear up a conflict with our own direct line. I keep all my original docs in sheet protectors and index them. I also scan them into the computer within a complex file structure. I almost never print our group sheets and other reports unless I specifically need them for a research project. Legacy allows you to get a great visual image of family relationships. Hope this gives you some food for thought... Re: [LegacyUG] primary scource and pedigree charts
Naomi, I have no suggestions on the second part of your question. However, regarding self as a primary source, I use this when I know from having been present or have on good information that an event occurred, for example, I just attended a nephew's wedding. I don't feel I need to ask the couple for a marriage certificate to enter it. RE: [LegacyUG] Relationship display window
Hi Ron, yes I did check the start person, myself, by running the set relationship and I had the same result, My 4th great grandfather shows up correctly. But when I check my half-5th cousin nothing shows up in the relationship window. I then set the start person as my half-5th cousin, and set the relationship using Tools>set relationships and I get the same results, ur mutual 4th great grandfather appears where it should. But when I click on my name there is nothing appearing in the relationship window. Re: [LegacyUG] primary scource and pedigree charts
Hi Nick, I hope I didn't come across as being "snooty" with my earlier comments about using oneself as a primary source! :-) I would definitely feel comfortable citing myself if I had just attended a cousin's wedding or something like that. It's mainly those direct lines where we need to get more picky. There is one other motive that does occasionally cause otherwise reliable people to give wrong information. It's that itching need to cover something up. It happens. I've had a cousin give a marriage date which I used in my files. Later, when I was at the courthouse, I happened to pull that record since I was there anyway. Oops - the date the cousin gave me was off a bit. I'm sure it was not due to senility. Again, this is not so important for collateral lines. It's just something to be aware of as we go about compiling our family tree. It's all such a juggling act! Re: [LegacyUG] Clooz 2
Adding a person to Clooz will result in that person being entered in Legacy, but the reverse doesn't happen. If you enter your people in Legacy, you'll have to do double entry to keep Clooz in sync. If you choose to link Clooz and Legacy, deleting some items from Clooz will result in those items being deleted from Legacy, which may not be what you want. Margaret [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The Help file documents a method of importing one's Legacy data file directly into Clooz which supposedly links Clooz directly to Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship display window
Ron and Leo, For Ron: The bug does affect the display. It is the Set Relationship process that has the bug and that is what calculates the relationships which appear on the screen. There are also problems with the relationship calculator which can be used to caclulate the relaionship(s) between any two people. The Set Relationships problem has been reported as fixed by the programmer but no testing of the fix has been completed. For Leo: The bug in the Set Relationships calculator affect those half-anything relationships, that is why your half- 5th cousins do not show any relationship on the screen. RE: [LegacyUG] Clooz 2
Laura, That is the extent of the linking. If you enter a census record in Clooz 2 and link it to ten people - that's as far as it goes. You still have to enter the census as an event to have it show up in Legacy. Since I track my documents through Legacy's MRIN numbers, I don't see the benefit of using Clooz. [LegacyUG] primary scource and pedigree charts
I am really trying to site scources for my research this time. If it is something that I know first hand i.e. my children's birthdates, etc. would I be considered a Primary Source? I have paper proof for many of the events i.e. birth certificates, etc. Are these Primary Sources? Even though I use Legacy I have everything on paper too. I do Family Group sheets for most if not all. I do not do the Pedigree charts for all. Should I? Maybe print them out on as needed/wanted? Thank you in advance. [LegacyUG] Relationship display window
In between the parents name window and the childs name window there is a small window that usually displays the relationship of the person that you are entering to a pre-determined individual, say yourself. In my program, which is the latest up to date version of Legacy 6.0.0.110, I was adding some children to a family who share the same 4th great grandfather as myself but the display window does not show the relationship. When I use the relationship calculator it shows that we are half - 5th cousins. Why does this not show up in the window, is this normal or is it a bug? RE: [LegacyUG] Clooz 2
The Help file documents a method of importing one's Legacy data file directly into Clooz which supposedly links Clooz directly to Legacy. Adding a person to Clooz will add the person to Legacy (and vice versa, I suppose). Depending on how much the two programs are linked, it could mean no double entry. Lloyd, Obviously you're subscribed to both lists as I've seen the emails on both. We do not intentionally remove anyone from the list unless there are serious infractions of the Legacy Users Group Etiquette guidelines. If you didn't unsubscribe yourself, someone else could have unsubscribed you. We've also had instances in the past where the mailing list had a hiccup and a few subscribers were lost, but we haven't had any problems since we switched servers and software. I've also cc'd your email address in case you unsubscribed since you posted this message. Thanks for using Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM Export - A serious bug???
Arnold, As the bug coordinator for Legacy I have great reservations about asking the programmers to change Legacy to allow what you have requested. If you click on the Help button on the GEDCOM export screen the very first paragraph is a step by step procedure for exporting a GEDCOM. Step two in the procedure is selecting the destination, using the customize button to change those selections is step 4. As Sherry explained in her response each destination format has a pre-defined list of items that are included. Selecting the Destination at step 2 sets those pre-defined items. Using the customize button as step 4 then lets you customize the items from the pre-defined defaults for the selected Destination format. If we change Legacy so the exclusions on the Customize screen are kept from one destination format to another I foresee, right after we issue the amended version, another message from a user who says something like: I customized my Legacy destination export to exclude item Y but when I decided I wanted to use the GEDCOM 5.5 list I expected that all the GEDCOM 5.5 items would be included. Instead I STILL lost my item Y data. That is a serious Bug. When I select GEDCOM 5.5 I want Legacy to give me ALL the GEDCOM 5.5 items without me having to revisit the customize screen and undoing any exclusions I made for another format. I believe the way Legacy works now is the correct methodology and is properly explained in the Help File for the GEDCOM Export. Now that you understand how and why Legacy works the way it does I trust you will see why I do not intend to submit a bug report to the programmers on this issue. I am only suggesting that the Legacy programmers *not* force a reset when changing the default "Produce File For" option. I belive this can be done easily. I see no reason that Legacy users should be blind sided by an unannounced forced reset only to see, in my case, all the excluded notes appear on the Internet. There is no similar forced reset when the Character Set is changed. In some cases, things that you've selected to exclude are already excluded by the main option. Thanks for using Legacy. RE: [LegacyUG] Deleting whole brances of tree
Thanks, Ron ... I sort of did a round about way of doing my deletions. I particularly liked the way it asked for confirmation before deleting family groups. I feel quite good about my results. I have an elderly uncle (b. 1918) on my father's side who is still alive and kicking, and sharp as a tack. He did quite a bit of genealogy on that side of the family years ago, but stopped about 20 years ago. I just sent him a cascade pedigree chart of that side of the family, which included all of the Kings and Queens dubiously related to our family. I cannot wait to hear his reaction. BTW, I saved a copy of the full database, with all of the pre 1500 people. Once in the Advanced Deleting tool, you can remove groups on a specified tag or those included in the last search results. You will also have the option to "Confirm Each Deletion". If you have many to "prune" from your database, it would be well to prepare a Focus Group of those that need to be removed. Then you can use the "Miscellaneous Searches" tab and click the "Focus Group" radio button to have everyone in that group located. Be sure to also click the button labeled "Clear List before this search" so that other search results will not be part of this selection. With the Focus Group selected, use Advanced Deleting to "Delete all individuals in the current Search List". = By the way...I completely agree with your assessment of data prior to 1500.
You will see it under Tools and also in the Name List under Options. The Name List is also used to display results of a search. Re: [LegacyUG] Re: [LEGACY] Got bumped off LegacyUserGroup
Hello Lloyd, What is you are asking for? I read your e-mail yesterday that was written in very large bold letters saying you were receiving too much mail and wanted off the list. You cannot be on the list and off the list at the same time. Perhaps you need to be more specific about your request. Do you want to be on the list, but know how to unsubscribe, yet stay subscribed? I have been on the LUG list for a long time. Sometimes I subscribe for a bit, receive too many posts, then I unsubscribe. And, of course, I then miss all the wonderful suggestions and I resubscribe. Now I have been subscribed for perhaps 6 months or longer. I do not have time to read each post, so, I read only the messages that have a subject line of interest to me. I delete the rest. On a few ocassions I have posted a query, a how do I do this - and, I do not receive a reply when I think I should have one. I just wait a week or so an repost, noting that I have not yet received a reply. It just depends on who is reading the messages. I suspect that a lot of the subscribers will have just deleted your subject line since we all saw your post yesterday. I read it that you did NOT wish to be on the mailing list. What is it you want? On? Off? There is no middle road. There is no reason at all to threaten to remove the very BEST user friendly genealogy program with a user friendly mailing list. But, please be exact in what you are asking. It appeared to me that you certainly did want OFF the list. This morning I was so surprised to see your complaining post. Yes, it is difficult sometimes to communicate via the written word on the Internet, but give us another try. Just another LUG subscriber, C.N. Lloyd, It sounds as though you wanted to unsubscribe ("...to stop getting mail from LUG" ) and someone has done this for you. I don't think there would have been any ulterior motive! If you don't want to receive mail from LUG, you can only unsubscribe.
