RE: [LegacyUG] what does "of (a place)" mean?

2007-01-01 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Tamara:

As it's used today, it would mean that your grandfather had some clue
(either a record or a verbal history) that Valentine McHenry at some time
lived in or near Cuba, Kansas. The term is used to narrow down the search
area.

How lucky you are to have your grandfather's records, and how happy he would
be to know that someone is carrying on his work! Good luck with your
research.

Subject: [LegacyUG] what does "of (a place)" mean?

Hello,

I've fairly recently gotten into researching family history after
inheriting some files that my grandfather started about 25 years ago.
I've found several instances where he's written things like:
   Valentine McHenry
   of Cuba, Kansas
   1853-1926

What does "of" mean? Is it where Valentine was born? Where he was
known to have lived as an adult? Something else? Does "of (a place)"
have a specific meaning that everyone uses the same way??

Thanks for any help!

In all the genealogical books I have read, the "Of" before a place means it
is a guess or estimate. Abt in front of the date is the same thing.

Re: [LegacyUG] what does "of (a place)" mean?

2007-01-01 Thread Dawn Crowley
When I first input a person, I do my best to identify him/her with what
I know at that point (name, age/date, location, relationships,
occupation, etc.). Therefore, in my records, this frequently means "at
one point of time in this person's life, he lived at that location". I
generally clarify that in the notes. This separates Charles Nofftz from
his father, Charles Nofftz, his uncle Charles Nofftz, etc., even if it
includes estimates that I may later prove wildly incorrect.

Also, Charles Nofftz was a farmer. In some areas, he would simply be in
a particular county because his home and farm lie outside a city or
village, but other areas have more detailed jurisdictions, such as
townships. Folks like Charles may be recorded as being "of" the nearest
town, as opposed to living within town boundaries. Farmers, loggers,
miners, and some fishermen may be identified as living in a "precinct"
for census record keeping purposes, but they would have never known that
they resided in Precinct J or Precinct 12. They'd be "of" an area.

RE: [LegacyUG] Delete Address Box info

2007-01-01 Thread Sherry/Support
Ron & Cynthia,

The option is now "Unlink" rather than "Delete". The address is not removed
from the Master Address List (and never was) and the change was made to
correctly identify the process as unlinking from the Master Address List
rather than deleting.

If you wish to delete the address completely, that needs to be done in the
Master Address List under Tools > Master Lists or by clicking on the
"Address List" button in the "Address for..." window to bring up the Master
Mailing Address List.

Thanks for using Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Delete Address Box info

2007-01-01 Thread Cynthia Russell
I am not sure if the new version of Legacy 6.0 and the updates have made a
change for the Address Box or not.

I apologize for the Subject, as it is not correct. I do know how to delete
the information, line by line. However, I used to be able to go into the
Address Box and hit 'Delete' when I no longer had a valid address, or
someone died. I am not finding that option now, and I do not know how to
delete address box information so that it goes from a colored icon to a
greyed icon, which is what I want.

Will someone please reply?

Brian,
Thanks That is what happened. BUT - why? Is there any way
to set it so it is automatically checked to show all events? Was
that a change in this version (because it has never happened
until this week). Seems like it would be defaulted to show unless
you do NOT want it then you would turn it off.

Check your setting for the Show All Events. If that has NO check mark

Subject: [LegacyUG] problem with source screen

Happy New Year Listers,
While trying to add a source & detail for a new spouse I ran
across a problem. The screen is BLANK! I clicked on the persons
name to bring them up; then clicked on the books (add or edit
source citations) and the screen comes up with NO lines, NO
labels. What have I done, please
I have WinXP (updated), and deluxe 6.0.0.118. This happened
yesterday also so I closed all my open files/websites, etc. and
that did not help. So, I did a cold start. It helped but now it
is happening again today. I really hate to have to keep doing a
cold start each time this happens. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Myrna

Re: [LegacyUG] Filing methods and family group sheets

2007-01-01 Thread WALT ALICE DE*WAELE
Hi Anne,

I have all of my family lines in one file and I have my wife's family lines
in another file. As for printing family group sheets, I have so far printed
them individually. I hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] SINGLE NAMES

2007-01-01 Thread Mary Young

Could you also add AKA "Nelson" in the Given Name and leave Surname blank?

In addition to Leon's response, you could add a note in privacy
brackets in the Given Name field such as "[[Only goes by one name]]" -
when you print reports and omit private notes, that info won't print
out, but you will still have it as a reminder in your database.
