I just tried a couple of things in my Test file.

First, with Person X as Start Person and with RIN of 1, I changed Person

Then I made Person Z (RIN 13)the Start Person and changed their RIN to

Fine if you just want to change one or two people, like just making sure
the Start Person is RIN 1, but I wouldn't want to have to renumber a
whole family one at a time like that!

Dennis,
I don't like to have lots of Master Sources, so I am like Jenny, in
that I don't necessarily fill in all the descriptive items, and I tend
to do like Richard, and use the person as the source, or in the
detail.

In addition to others, I have six basic master sources called:
Certificate/Record - Baptism
Certificate/Record - Birth
Certificate/Record - Confirmation
Certificate/Record - Death
Certificate/Record - Divorce
Certificate/Record - Marriage

I might use one of these and in the Source Detail list something like:
Email KILKENNEY from Bill Surname to Susan Daily dated Oct 31, 2006
8:35 PM.
I then place the entire body of the email into the Detail Text tab.

or instead, I will use the master source of
Person - William Bill Surname
and the detail of
Email Re: Presset St. Toledo OH - Kilkenny connection dated Dec 22,
2006 3:57 PM.
and place the email into the Detail Text tab.

For posts, I tend to use the master source of
Internet Web Site
and the detail of
Rootsweb Leitrim Message Board post Re: Parochial registers of
Cloone, 1820-1927, Diocese of Ardagh by James Surname dated 11 Feb
2006 7:39 PM GMT (Posted at
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YWC.2ACI/5298...)
and I copy the entire post into the Detail Text tab.

You might think about using this last option, but changing the master
source from Internet Web Site to more specific ones like Rootsweb.com
Message Board Post.

I have been more specific in my Master Source naming when I downloaded
a GEDCOM from Rootsweb's WorldConnect and exchanged correspondance
with the owner who told me where she obtained her information. In that
case I used the Master Source title of GEDCOM - McGovernNY by
Patricia Surname, her name as the author, the title of the GEDCOM as
the title, the type as GEDCOM, and under publication noted the last
update date, and the URL location of the tree.

My philosophy is a more easily managed (i.e. shorter) Master Source
List.

Re: [LegacyUG] Deleting RINs and starting over

2007-02-13 Thread ronald ferguson

Thanks Jenny - now I know!

Michele, I do agree with the others. Frankly your best bet, if you don't
like the gaps in the RINS, is simply to renumber and forget about their
order as in the long term you cannot reasonably control this. If you wish to
have a reference to suit your taste I suggest that you use the USER ID which
you can display in the Event box on the Family Display should you wish and
include in rports etc.

[LegacyUG] Photo Question

2007-02-13 Thread leo macdonald
I responded earlier that I could transferr pictures by using the Rich Text
File (TGF) this was incorrect information and for this I apologize. I should
have referred to the PDF File instead, by using the PDF file you can send
pictures by e-mail (if it is not too large) or you can transfer the file to
another computer by using a USB drive. Thanks to Cathy for bringing this to
my attention. Leo

Seems like the easiest way to renumber within a file would be to renumber
starting with something high (10001 for instance) ... when that is
completed, renumber again starting with 1 ... of course, I'm ignoring any
need/attempt to get any specific numbers assigned to individuals. Try it
first on a test file copied from your live file.

Reading the help section it says that I can import a Gedcom or PAF files. I
try both but it does not work ?
May be you can tell me how to a make a GEDCOM from my info ?...
Or is there a way to transfer my files into legacy without having to do it

Jude,

Other than saying that your info is stored in My Documents you do not say
how it is stored. Unless it is stored in a database which can generate a
Gedcom your only way would seem to be on an individual basis. We may be able
to make suggestions if you tell us exactly how it is stored.

Even so you will find the transfer well worth your while.

In what format is your data currently stored? Is it wordprocessing
documents, database, spreadsheet, several different formats?

If you have it in another genealogy program, (such as Family Tree Maker,
for example) you can export it as a GEDCOM (which is a specialised type
of text file which is fairly standardised so it is readable by all
genealogy programs) and import the GEDCOM into Legacy.

Otherwise, you will need to type it into Legacy. Think carefully before
you start about how you want to enter Events (how you will enter Census
information, for example) and how you will enter Source information. It
is so much easier if you get this right before you start, rather than
change your mind when you have a few hundred people in your Family File.

My thanx to all who responded. This is a great group!

William - Special thanx because your suggestion will meet my needs
perfectly. And, as you mentioned, will be easy to deal with re: reports,

Patricia - I use tags as you mentioned, but for more transient or temporary
items. I don't want to tie up one of the three as shown since I use tags
frequently. Thanx for the idea thoughas it was on target and may help
others.

Susan - You made some good points that I need to ponder before I move

[LegacyUG] Publishing Center suggestion ...

2007-02-13 Thread Bob Bashford

The Publishing Center is terrific ... but I have a suggestion that would
make it even better.

When outputting to/for a black/white printer, Legacy suggests converting
photos to grayscale.

I agree, but it can be an arduous task ... I copy all the photos in
C:/Legacy/Pictures to C:/Legacy/Pictures_GS. Then I use Irfanview (free
and good) to batch convert the entire folder to grayscale. Next, I set the
Publishing Center path to the new folder and have it find all pictures ...
since the names are the same, it's quick and easy from that point.

But wouldn't it be nice to have a tick box in the Publishing Center for
Convert all pictures to grayscale? Legacy could then convert each
picture as it is queued up for printing ... leaving the original pictures
in place and unchanged ... with no need for another folder or changing
folder paths.

Any comments?

	Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Deleting RINs and starting over

2007-02-13 Thread Carl Cox
Another way to change RINs, if you are insistent, would be to use the
side-by-side view, create a new database, and drag and drop the close
relatives into the new file, then arrange the RIN numbers to suit yourself
in that small database. After you get the few correct, then import the rest
of the data into higher numbers that you don't care about. Legacy has so
many ways to do things that you just have to look around.

RE: [LegacyUG] New user

2007-02-13 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Hello Jude:

Your son must be a smart guy to make such a good choice of genealogy
programs.

I assume that your genealogy data is in some sort of file like Word or
perhaps Excel. If that's the case, it's not possible to create a GEDCOM.
You can only make a GEDCOM from a genealogy software program. I'm afraid
you will have to manually re-enter your data into Legacy. That's not really
as terrible as it seems because in the process you will be doing a good
review of your data and probably finding things to clean up, clarify or
correct. And I'm sure you will be very pleased with the results once the
transfer is done. Good luck with your project!

By the way, many people on this mailing list have dial-up connections to the
Internet and receiving messages in HTML, especially with images included,
causes them major problems. Others are very concerned about viruses and
other nasties that can be included with HTML messages. It would be best if
you could send your messages to the list in plain text.

Bob,

Please think about the programming time this would take and the increase in
size of Legacy and have pity on those who still download by dial-up. It is a
specialist job to correctly convert from colour to grey scale and best

Not exactly. The program cannot sort on some fields,
but you can create a report in the search list and
find the category, Date Added to File, and Date

frequently, save the report, or buy Access. If you
need help with this, I will be leaving soon, and back

Re: [LegacyUG] MRIN

2007-02-13 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Each husband and wife MUST have a different RINs. I do
not understand 'who are both the same'. They should
not be! Please revise your question, or check if you
have made the one person as an AKA using the other
person. Why would you merge two people into one? We
will help you, but help us.

Re: [LegacyUG] Readily visible Link Proof

2007-02-13 Thread Bob Bashford

John

This is a bit unorthodox, but if you're not using the Record ID for
anything else, you could enter something there to show your level of Link
Proof. The Record ID can be added to the ends of displayed names and would
show up pretty much anywhere. See the View tab under the Options/Customize
section.

Give it a try and report back ...

Bob

In Family View - I'm seeking help as to how to see/show which
child/children have a Link Proof. I know I can check birth notes, events,
notes (general or research), etc to find the info. That can be very time
consuming. I'm seeking a readily visible or one click way to see this as
I move thru the screens. Any suggestions?

Regards, John

[LegacyUG] Indiviual Report and Marriage Events

2007-02-13 Thread Olds-Wills-Anderson-Simonson Hodges-Harris-Liikala-Jukkara
In a previous email, sorry at the time it wasn't an issue so didn't save it,
it was mentioned marriage events will not appear on individual reports. I
shrugged it off.

After a little more thought it occurred to me I've been putting addresses in
marriage events when the addresses applied to both husband and wife.

I realize an Individual Report is an 'Individual' Report. However, doesn't
marriage information also apply to each 'Individual'?? It would seem
appropriate to include marriage information to have a complete record of
events affecting each individual on the Individual Report.

I suppose the consequence is then having duplicate information on the
Individual Reports for both husband and wife. But I'd rather that than not
have the information on either.

Thoughts? Work arounds (other than not using marriage events for
information I'd like appearing on Individual Reports)??
Thanks
Gary

Re: [LegacyUG] MRIN

2007-02-13 Thread Mary Young

Hi, John
If husband and wife are both the same - are they truly identical,
i.e. do they have same RINs?
If so, it's the same couple, but they have been linked/married twice.
Look at the couple in the family view. Does the spouse icon under
each person show 2?
Click on the husband's icon to open the Spouse List.
If you see the same wife listed twice, select the unwanted marriage
and Unlink to remove the unwanted MRIN.
I see you are wise and always have your backup to hand g

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting Data By Date Entered?

2007-02-13 Thread Heather Stovold

Hm - good question! I did a bit of playing and couldn't find it - you seem
to be limited by what you can sort on and I didn't see a good report
either to do it that way. But thanks, I hadn't realized that was one of the
items I could add to the index - but I agree it would be more useful if you
could sort by it!

Re: [LegacyUG] Indiviual Report and Marriage Events

2007-02-13 Thread Dennis Davenport
That's a very interesting point, Gary. I'm a new user and was somewhat
surprised about how the marriage information was so segregated from
everything else. It surprised me that marriage events are not included
in the Events/Facts portion of the Individual's Information screen. I
guess one can go to the Chronology View to see all the events for a
person. But it is still kind of odd. Marriage and divorce should
probably be just another event like occupation and graduation.

This doesn't speak to your exact report issue but it is related I think.

[LegacyUG] Intellishare ID

2007-02-13 Thread kb
Hello

I migrated to Legacy from inferior programs, tested the free version for
a year and switched to de luxe a couple of years back, now running
6.0.0.110. I'm still learning about Legacy and need to know more about
Intellishare.

According to the Help documentation, Legacy automatically marks all the
records in the Master Family File with a serial number that uniquely
identifies each individual. The wording suggests that it's a separate
identifier than the RIN. If so, how does it behave in a merge if the
Intellishare IDs are different? How is uniqueness guaranteed?

On this same subject, how does intellishare work? I have seen the

implement a merge? Does it automatically happen when you import an

If the couple are joined by two marriages, then unlink is the proper procedure.
If you delete one person, both will be gone. (I just deleted by mistake, and
have not been able to find who I deleted.) Unlinking will lose the marriage
information, so if one marriage has good information and the other is sketchy,
unlink the sketchy one.

[LegacyUG] Filling in the gaps in RINs

2007-02-13 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova

There is a very easy way to fill in gaps in RIN #s.

The Legacy Home Statistics will give you the total Individuals in your db.
If you look in Name List sorted by RIN # and click Last to find highest
RIN used and it is much higher than total Individuals just tag all with
higher RIN than total Individuals, export to temp db, reimport the temps
they will fill in all the gaps. Then a simple automatic Intellimerge will
remove the higher RINs. Be sure to do a check / repair afterward to clear
the orphaned source citations.

Re: [LegacyUG] Intellishare ID

2007-02-13 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
The Intellishare # is 32 characters long, each character has 36 alphanumeric
possibilities. It is randomly generated when you create a new record.

Intellishare works it's miracle merge if you give your database to a cousin
or any other relative and when the other person has modified or added to
your data he returns it to you to remerge. When you Intellimerge his file
back into yours any individuals unchanged by either of you can be
automatically merged with no intervention. If he (or yourself) corrected or
altered any fields they will all show up side by side, you decide which
version to accept.

If your cousin were to overwrite his name over yours he and you would have
same Intellishare # but the merge would only offer the chance to merge which
you would refuse.
