Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestry and bfast.com

2007-06-03 Thread R G Strong Genealogy

Elaine,
You can indeed access ancestry from Legacy, but if you do not have a
subscription to ancestry, then your search results will show the free stuff
and a padalock on the not free stuff.
However to actually do the search on ancestry you have to modifiy the search
string paramater box as discussed in the other posts.

Jack,
I don't think this will work for everybody as this is a search string for
a particular person and place, it doesn't have the generic fields listed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging two family files

2007-06-03 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
This works well, but slowly.
1. How big are each separate file. I combined 3
different versions of the same people with
approximately 23000 in each, merging together into a
combined 27000.
2. For all three, I moved the RIN Numbers for each to
the AFN, or if you have something unique there, same
thing. 3. Use file A, I used as is. For file B Import
the entire file into A, starting with first RIN =
30001, For file C, start the import from RIN 60001.
Most will be lined up as below.
3. Now, each 'identical' person has the same AFN
aleady. Person 00012 from A, should match 30012 and
60012.
4. If it seems to have worked (90%), start the merge
using AFN. ALL the exact matches clean quickly, the
remaining are the only ones you need to 'fix'.
Good luck.

[LegacyUG] Question re FGS splash screen

2007-06-03 Thread Sharron Spencer
When I click on the icon to create a Family Group Sheet, Descendant
Chart, etc., there is no opportunity up front to change any of the
Report Options because the screen splashes quickly and goes straight to
the preview screen.

I vaguely recall there is/was an option, somewhere, the causes this to
occur, i.e., the screen to splash and go directly to the preview screen.
To change the Report Options, I have to close the preview screen, click
Report Options and make any changes, then click preview again.

Can anyone tell me where the option is, or what I can do to stop the
splash screen and immediate preview screen, so I can adjust the Report
Options and then click Preview when I'm ready and not have to backtrack?

I hope this is understandable, and I appreciate any help.

Sharron

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging two family files

2007-06-03 Thread Cathy

Hi Lincoln,

First make backups of both Legacy files making sure you give them a
clear filename so you know what they are backups of and when.

eg Smith family before merge with Jones family 20070603

This is so that if you make a mistake when merging, you can go back
and start again.

Then import one of the files into the other
File > Import - Legacy File

Choose the option to Add to the currently open Family file

When you get to the Import Options
Choose to Renumber the RINs and choose a start number larger than the
highest RIN in the file you are adding to.
If you choose something like 10,001, the RINs will reflect the old
RINs but just be 10,000 larger.
This is a tip so that you can easily see in the merge which person
came from which file.

After the import, if you are not taken automatically to the merge
screen, go there yourself. (whether it is automatic depends on one of
your settings)

How much actual merging of people is required depends on how many
people were in both files. If just the partners of the new marriage,
then the merge will be very quick. If nobody, even quicker as you
don't need to merge but just link the two partners in the new marriage.
However, if you haven't done a merge on your own file before, you may
be presented with lots of possible merges - like all those John
Smiths without dates.
If the people come from the same file (here's where the renumbering
the RINs on the incoming file helps) and you are reasonably confident
you don't have duplicates in the original files, you can ignore them
or mark them as not duplicates so the pairing doesn't pop up next
time you do a merge.

Lengthy, but still a summary. The best way to learn is to try it and
then read the Help file accessed from the Help button on the screens
that puzzle you.
If you have the backups you can experiment knowing that you can
always go back and start again if you really have misunderstood
something and made the wrong choice.

Enjoy
Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] CSV format

2007-06-03 Thread ronald ferguson

Luis,

I know nothing of the details of Excel or Access as I use Open Office but
the .fdb files *are* Access files. If one copies the .fdb file, rather than
use the original, it can be opened in Access. To open in OOo one has to
change the .fdb to .mdb before importing it but I do not know if this is
also the case for Access.

Good morning

I've searched all the messages for exporting to Excel and Access and
have tried the export of listings in txt format.

But, it seems that this doesn't work correctly, because when you have
somethig missing in the list (for instance the Descendants view where
you don't have some dates or locals) the text file doesn't put two
commas, refering to a empty field. So when you import to Excel, the
columns don't have always the same information.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a "feature" of the export? Can't
Legacy put a "proper" CSV format in a future version ? (and can I have a
free version for this sugestion ;-))

I can also go directly to the .FDB database but I don't know how to
produce the kind of indented list that the Descendant view gives.

This is because I don´t like the usual way of presenting information and
I prefer a more tabular aproach (I think it is easier to "see" the
information) as I have im my site at

Dennis,

I do not know if this will work as I have never had to try and reverse the
process but see tiny URL http://tinyurl.com/ytr3kz for Gen Browser. Do not

Hope it helps.

Hi there,
I was just nosing around seeing what people are doing/asking and I saw yours
and was just thinking if not RINS what about your user IDs.? I've numbered
mine 1st three letters on surname year of birth then depending how you are
adding just go 0001, 0002, and so on. then with the photo its how ever you want
to do your finling system.plus your User ID number. Just a thought. See ya Kim

Over time you will find that RINs are not constant. If you export your file
to a new Legacy file and do not check Maintain RINs, they will be renumbered.
After being bit with this several times over the years, I decided to keep the
information pertinent to the subject of the photo. In place of RIN, I use
birth year.

One of the best ways I found to organize and classify pictures and

LastName_ First_Middle_RIN_PhotoNumber (0001, 0002, etc.) for individuals,
LastName_MRIN_MarriageNumber (1, 2, etc.) for marriages,
DocumentName_LastName_First_Middle_RIN_DocumentNumber (0001, 0002, etc.)
for Documents,
Headstone_LastName_First_Middle_RIN for headstone pictures, etc.

Using this naming convention, you can easily distinguish between people of
the same name using their RIN of the database and also locate different items
such as Manifests, Census, Headstones, etc. in a flash.

I keep all the photos and documents in the Legacy folder on Drive C in
subfolder Pictures, this way when I want to share any info with relatives they
are very easily located.

Hope this helps

Saving your images as a .tiff file is the commonly accepted 'best way' to
keep digital copies of your original. This would then become your 'master
  copy'.

From that you could make .jpgs to whatever file size you deem appropriate
for use (website, email atch, Legacy image, etc).

As for where to file your digital images, opinions on this will vary. I
have one folder under my Legacy directory titled "Images". Within this
folder I have several sub-folders. My preference is to keep all
'people'
images in one sub-folder titled "Photograph". I also have digital images
of
buildings, monuments, correspondence, newspaper articles, census records,
documents, etc. These are also all filed in separate sub-folders
according
  to their subject category.

How you title your images is also a matter of personal preference. I
prefer
a simple numbering system (File ID). For example, my "Photographs" are
labeled P0001, P0002, P0003, and so on. My "Documents" are labeled
D0001,
D0002, D0003, and so on. The same applies to my other image categories.

Legacy allows you to capture details of each image by providing image
fields
such as "Caption", "Date", "Description", and "File ID". And also
permits
assigning images to specific individuals. This is where I record the
  necessary details about each image.

Unfortunately as yet Legacy only provides one report format for this
information. The report sorts by File ID. Suggestions have been
submitted
to also include an alphabetical sort and other image report options.

Until then one must use a supplemental program to report details of the
images. Many people use MS Access since Access is directly compatible
with
Legacy's data base. However, this requires a reasonable understanding of
the Access program and its interface with Legacy to generate the desired
  reports. Not a lighthearted undertaking.

Once Legacy establishes a more sophisticated report capability for
images,
the process will be simple and efficient.

If I can help further with any specific questions, feel free to email me
  directly.

  Ron,

You can change the tags that are shown on the Family View two ways:

  1. On the Menu Bar go to Options>Customize, General Tab, and click on "Tags
to Show" in the left bottom part of the window. Select the tags you want to
show.

  2. Right click on any of the 3 tag boxes shown in the Family View and you
can change the "Tags to Show:.

  Hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] CSV format

2007-06-03 Thread Luis Salreta

This is because I don´t like the usual way of presenting information and
I prefer a more tabular aproach (I think it is easier to "see" the
information) as I have im my site at
http://salretas.planetaclix.pt/Os_antigos/os_antigos.html (sorry - in
portuguese).

Thank you very much

I don't think either one will work because it is using a person's name in
the search stream. I just posted a solution and why you are getting the

I don't think this will work for everybody as this is a search string for a
particular person and place, it doesn't have the generic fields listed.

Is there someway to adjust the string so you search with Exact matches

I dislike the presentation Ancestry gives when that is not selected. The
old search from within Legacy did presented it the way I like.

I hope this can be done. Gee.don't we get spoiled to what we are

Re: [LegacyUG] [Legacy UG] Help - Searching Internet using "Search Internet for Current Person"

2007-06-03 Thread R G Strong Genealogy

To all who are getting this message when you try an ancestry.com search!
You are receiving the message because as of midnight May 31, 2007 the
ancestry.com affiliate was dropped from the bfast.com servers and it will no
longer function unless you edit your ancestry.com search stream. To see how
to edit here is the context of Jim Terry's solution which works:

Legacy Users,

Here is a work around:

In Legacy, click Internet on the menu bar and select "Search Internet for
Current Person." Next click on the "Customize Searches" button. Click on one
of the "Select" buttons (I'd select the one next to the Ancestry.com search)
to bring up the Select an Internet Search window. Scroll down to
Ancestry.com, click on Edit.

Copy the following URL and paste it in the search string field, replacing
the one that starts with http://service.bfast.com:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&=&=&=&=&=&=&=&=&=&=&gsfn=[
GivenNames]&gsln=[SurName]&=&gsby=[BirthYear]&gsb2co=1%2CAll+Countries&gsb2p
l=1%2C+&gsdy=[DeathYear]&gsd2co=1%2CAll+Countries&gsd2pl=1%2C+&=&=&=&=&=&=&=
&sbo=0&ufr=0&srchb=r&prox=1&db=&ti=0&ti.si=0&gl=allgs&gss=ansmp&so=3

This is an extremely long link, so make sure it all gets pasted into the
search string field exactly, with no breaks or spaces.

Click Save, then at the next screen click Select, then at the next screen
Close and try the Ancestry.com search again.

Good luck,

Jim Terry

you will probably have to copy and paste each line of the hyperlink into the
edit box. just add each line to the end of the previous line, when all are
pasted in then save it.
