[LegacyUG] Specific search of data

2007-06-08 Thread Phil Hawkins

Hi All
Is there a way that I can create a list from the family file of qiute
specific details?
I particularly want (at the moment) to find all those who have died
under the age of 3 years.

Is there a way of putting in a search string to do this?
What about other specific strings? Can they be written?
Thank you
Phil

Re: [LegacyUG] Living persons on Descendancy chart

2007-06-08 Thread Cathy

Hi Leona,

Yes it is important.
In the Report Options
Top right of Format Tab you'll find: Suppress details for living
people and the option to change the names to Living.

This feature is available in all reports on the Format Tab.

Also you can exclude lots of living people by choosing to only chart
generations where the majority are dead - see on the main Descendant
Chart screen buttons with 5, 10 etc. or you can enter any number from
1 to 250 in the box.

Cheers,
Cathy

Not to my knowledge (though th eprogrammers may), it just seems not to like
a 4 letter extension.

RE: [LegacyUG] What size pictures are too big, when I need to think about space

2007-06-08 Thread ronald ferguson

Kim,

There is not a staightforward answer to this. However starting from your
original. You say that you have scanned some in which suggests that you are
not using a digital camera in which case the format to use is not terribly
important as you can always scan it in again. JPEG is normally fine but
caution as Legacy is not too happy with .jpeg and one should use .jpg ( they
are both the same).

With digital cameras there is a difference in that one cannot normally
recover the original picture once one has played with it. Hence the use of
the tiff format to preserve its resolution etc. Personally, I don't use tiff
but I always keep the original in a separate file and only manipulate
copies. Because of your limited memory you may wish to save the originals to
disk thus freeing up your HD. (one should do this anyhow as a backup).

The thing to remember is that the more one manipulates a picture the more
the loss of quality, with a .jpg after about 4 separate changes the loss is
becoming noticeable and with a .gif only a couple of changes has an effect.
Another format which is reasonable in both memory use and preservation of
quality is PNG. Both BMP and TIFF are high in memory use but excellent
quality.

Generally I use a maximum of 400px for the longest side for both reports and
web pages. In the case of web pages 400px is really the maximum as larger
than that they take far too long to download on dial-up and where possible I
use the gif as these are the least memory intensive (excellent when only 2
or 3 colours are used) but for photos .png or .jpg. One other thing to
remember is that it is always possible to reduce the size of a picture
without loss of quality but if it is reduced and then enlarged back to the
original size quality is lost

I hope this helps.

He there to all,
I am starting to put some pictures with my people now. I have gone thru all
archives and have finally decided what sort of filing system I am going to
use but because my computer is very, very small only 3.1GB I want to find
out what is the best or smallest conversion I can do to try and keep
everything to a minimum (well untill I get a new computer in July). I have
scanned a few in jpeg, but I did read in one archive that tiff is the best
if I wanted to copy and send photos to people. Can someone please shed a
bit

of light since I really dont know which way to go. Thanks to all Kim

Re: [LegacyUG] Prefered Mother-in Law Problem

I think you are confused on what the "prefered spouse" means. That
means that if you were to open the name list and then pick your

I've just learned something - thank you!

I hadn't noticed that you could set a spouse as preferred (I've used it
for the children). I'll go through my file now and change the
preference for quite a few spouses.
