Re: [LegacyUG] Family View: * next to relationship

2007-09-12 Thread Wendy Howard

Thanks, Ron & John, for your replies. :-)

Yes, Ron, the new child is being properly verified and sourced! All I
have to go on so far is the text message I received early this morning,
which I've transcribed into the source to be printed in reports - my
aunt included the full names of both parents as well as the baby's, so
that I could include them in my database; for those who are wondering
how you source a text message, I've used a Master Source called "Private
Correspondence", and entered the name, date and time of the message in
the detail, as well as the transcription in the detail text tab. And a
photo that she emailed me is now set in the database, too. Perhaps
there will be more when the new great-grandmother and also the new great
aunt (my other first cousin who is only 35!) visit me tomorrow, but the
birth won't be registered yet, I expect.

I don't normally record that "end" of the family, ie the kids of my own
first cousins. Mostly 'cos I don't know the details, so it's good to
make a start with this one - it may encourage my aunt to sit down and
write out the various names of her line - I can't remember the names of
my cousin's six kids, let alone the four father's names, LOL!! I figure
she is making up for those of us who haven't - and aren't likely to -
have kids of our own. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

My understanding on this:
1) Yes, if you selected "show 1/2 siblings"
to choose: right click on a child in the family view > select

2 & 3) I don't know any way to do these. That doesn't mean it can't be

Related to this, I've run into a couple "weird" situations:

1) Child born to parent 1 & 2, now cared for by parent 1 & 3

If I turn on "show 1/2 siblings" on the FAMILY TAB - the child
shows up twice (same RIN) under each parent set - once as a full
sibling (but with no biological/guardian/adopted indicator), and
once as a 1/2 brother.

When I right click on CHILD SETTINGS under biological
mother/father, I have the CHILD STATUS as blank and the
RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER/MOTHER both set to BIOLOGICAL.

When I right click on CHILD SETTINGS under 1 & 3, I have the
CHILD STATUS as blank and the RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER as
BIOLOGICAL and RELATIONSHIP TO MOTHER as blank (I don't know if
the "step mother" ever adopted or even got guardianship).

I tried playing with the CHILD SETTINGS by putting GUARDIAN in
there. This shows up on the screens in Legacy 5 Deluxe, but
doesn't seem to in Legacy 6 standard. However CHILD SETTINGS
doesn't seem like the right place to put that info - it seems
like it should go under RELATION SHIP TO field.

---
2) Child born to parent 4 & 5, now raised by aunt & uncle
(person's 6 & 7) under guardianship.

Child shows up in Pedigree, Family, Descendant views as a true
"child" - no indicator that it is not a blood-line child.

When I right click on CHILD SETTINGS under the aunt/uncle, I have
the CHILD STATUS as blank and the RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER/MOTHER
both set to GUARDIAN.
When I right click on CHILD SETTINGS under biological
mother/father, I have the CHILD STATUS as blank and the
RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER/MOTHER both set to BIOLOGICAL.

Again, I tried playing with CHILD SETTINGS, but this does not
seem to be the right place to put the ADOPTED, GUARDIAN, etc
settings.

---
3) Another related question (I'm using Legacy 5 Deluxe) - is
there a way to "force" "Child Settings" to come up every time a
child is entered? (just like the Marriage Info automatically
comes up whenever a spouse is added)?
I believe this RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER/MOTHER was just added in
version 5, so I'm hoping that version 6 (or 7) improves upon this
feature (I haven't played w Version 6 Standard very much, and
don't have Version 6 Deluxe). I very much believe that it is
important to show the type of relationship between parent/child.
I think the child should show up under any "family unit" that

cared for him as that accurately shows family history - but I
also feel it is important to show blood-line vs not-blood-line
for medical research.

Thanks,
Bob

I appreciate the suggestions. I was really hoping for a "lazy man's" way
out - where I could give them access to the live file but yet not allow them
to change it. That way I wouldn't have to duplicate anything and they'd
always have access to the most recent version without any work on my side.
(no PDF exporting, no CD burning, etc).

But I also like the idea of making a copy for them that could, in a way,
serve as a backup. Luckily we have a couple computers and they RARELY ever
get on "my" computer - so it would be pretty easy to regularly dup the files
over to the other computer. (Of course I also do a Legacy backup (ie: a ZIP
file) onto a different harddrive.)

Thanks again,

Tracy,

I don't know how you can lock your file but you can easily lock your computer.

1. Right click on your desktop;
2. Select NEW > Shortcut
3. In the Text box in the Wizard that asks for the location of the item enter;

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

4. Select Next
5. Name it lock desk top (or anything you wish) and select OK.

Now give your user account a simple password (I use my initials as they are quick and easy to
enter). Now when you double click your new shortcut you will lock your desktop and the "munchkin"
will not be able to access anything (unless she crack your password and then you have bigger
problems that sss)

You may also drag the shortcut to your taskbar for a one click lock.

Before, I was working with a huge file that printed 400+ pages. So I never
paged through the whole Index. This time I tried a much smaller file and
noticed for the first time that all of my alternate names were being dumped at

for nicknames and that the nickname would be naturally associated with the

now that it's been called to my attention, I can think of an example where it
could be used -- people with hyphenated names probably want to list their
surnames more than one way.

Thanks to all who replied to my query.

My 2 cents to Legacy is to re-do the Alternate Names box to automatically
insert the last name into the surname blank like you do in the family records.

The user would still have the ability to over-write it, but 99% of the time

Why don't you password protect yourself as a (Windows) User ? You could

I did find one the other day when I did a narrative report, others
looking at it must have thought I was losing it to type in repeated

Ron, do you also check "Just leave it blank" instead of "Unknown"?

Options > Customise > Data Format > Word for Blank Records > (Just
leave it blank.)

It works well for Legacy, but add-ons like Legacy Charting Companion
put in "Unknown" if the person field is blank for MRINs.

Wonderful suggestions, pity my 4yo likes to come to my file while I'm
doing something else, like answering the phone. She likes to type her
name and see the pictures of herself and her grandparents - I can't
always easily find where she's helped me out with data entry/changes.
I did find one the other day when I did a narrative report, others
looking at it must have thought I was losing it to type in repeated
letters eg. sss. I'd love to have a lock on the file so
munchkin can't adjust anything really important. I try to backup
before I move away from the file, at least if I really can't be
certain of her changes, I can restore from the backup.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family View: * next to relationship

2007-09-12 Thread John S. Adams
The original question referred to an asterisk next to the relationship. It
designates a relative of a later, or younger generation. E.g., my first
cousin's granddaughter is my 1st cousin, twice removed. My grandfather's 1st
cousin is also my 1st cousin twice removed. The cousin's gr dau is marked with
an * to indicate a younger generation. Grandpa's cousin has no *.

Mary,

Glad to see both our football teams won tonight - nice to be able to gloat
for once!

I don't actually need an asterisk to show me my cousins' relationships
since they are my contempories. I guess though that I could make a mistake
between two people with the same relationship to the start person if I set
relationships based on a distant ancestor when I may not be as certain as to
exactly how a person fitted in. Maybe unlikely, but possible.

That is already indicated by closeness of cousinship, i.e.

How do others on the list handle the filing of a 93 page
complete pension file? I am trying to put everything in notebooks, with sheet
protectors. This is obviously not going to fit that format. Although none of
the original sheets appear to have been legal size, the person at NARA who
copied the file for me put it on legal paper. I don’t use legal-size
folders (petty prejudice on my part).

Surely no one would use 45 page protectors?

Thoughts welcomed, in spite of the fact that it is a lame
question; I think the only answer must be “file it in a legal size
folder.”

If you burn a copy of your family tree file onto a cd and give that
to the kids, they will be unable to make any changes to the file. As
part of the burning process, Legacy automatically sets a read only
attribute on the file that can only be removed by copying it to a
hard drive and resetting it there.

Consider it a backup..

Without that option, I guess I can make a duplicate of my database

[LegacyUG] Gedcom Export

2007-09-12 Thread hwatman

I just tried adding URL event to a few people with myspace pages.? After a few
failed attempts to review the results on my TNG site I discovered that the URL
event is not exported.? The customize list for the export function does not
include the URL event and several others in the options to be included on
export.? how can this be changed?

This is such a little thing you might not even notice it, but I do and
it really bugs me (pardon the pun!)

In the Assigned Sources for .." window, with the Detail open you see
headings for Detail:, Detail Comments:, Recorded Date:: and File ID.

Notice the two colons after Recorded Date? And no colon after File ID?

Like I said, such a *little* thing, but being such a little thing
perhaps will be no more than a couple of minutes of a programmer's time
to put it right.

2007-09-12 Thread ronald ferguson

Jenny,

I hadn't noticed that but you promted me to have a look at the Source Detail
for Name. The Recorded Date again has the double colon after it but on this
screen the File ID does have a single colon.
