The word "bug" is usually used to mean something which the programmers did
not intend and would not wish to happen - in other words, a mistake.

Although I can see an argument in favour of not displaying this RIN 0 line
in the Name List, it is not a bug as these blank lines which are used by
Legacy and cannot be deleted appear at the head of most or all lists in
the program - Sources, Locations, etc.

In this case, I would call it a (apparently cosmetic) bug. I am a
retired developer so I know what a bug is. If a user came to me with
this problem and I had to classify it as either a bug or a feature
request, I would classify it as a bug. And besides, how do you know what
the programmers intended? Did you ask? Perhaps you read minds?

That being said, if one of the developers can explain to me why
displaying RIN 0 in the Index tab (and Name List) is desired behavior, I
am more than willing to change my opinion. Maybe they have a good
reason. But at this point in time I don't see any benefit in displaying
it.

The Master Source List does not display a blank line in V6.

The blank lines at the beginning of most of the other lists have a
different purpose. I'll leave it to you to figure out what that purpose
is.

Re: [LegacyUG] set relationships

2008-09-24 Thread Elsie Saar
When I enter a person, I have a field I call "relationship" that I
complete when I enter a person. I set this field to show on the Family
view. That way I don't spend time researching people who are not
related; and I can tell at a glance who/how the person is related to
either myself, my husband, or our granddaughter. Don't mean to
complain, but I do miss the v6 method. I have to use the Relationship
Calculator for my husband's and granddaughter's relatives anyway so
now I'll have to use it to do mine. Thanks for the help everyone.

Elsie, you make my point: "having to reset relationships or opening
the relationship

calculator every time I add a new related person is very time
consuming." Imagine the program automatically doing that every time
you added a new name.

I do not reset after adding every name, even if in a direct line, just
every now and again when I either need to do it or just want to look
at something. In fact, at the moment I think it's still set to my
sister's husbands family for whom I've been doing some work rather
than mine, which I have been working on for the past 3-4 days.

But, Ron, having to reset relationships or opening the relationship
calculator every time I add a new related person is very time
consuming. I really miss the automatic calculation of relationships,
it was a really neat feature. Seems some features could have had an
option, use either v6 or v7 method, like with Sources.

No, Mary, you haven't misunderstood the question. I too remember V6
setting relationships for new persons, but if it can be done that
way

in V7 I haven't found it.

One reason for this maybe the addition of all the non-direct
relationships (which I seem to remember were requested by users), I
can well imagine that if Legacy had to recalulate every relationship
whenever a new person was added waiting for our next entry would be
like waiting for Christmas.

A non-direct relationship is like "husband of the second cousin, six

Personally, I add in my Relationship event, event name "Relationship",
event desc "[[none]]" for non-direct relationships as we don't share
blood.
Perhaps we could have an option to use v6 or v7 as with the Source

I have not had that problem. I just added a test person in v6 whose
relationship calculated immediately to 5th cousin, 5 times removed.

Elsie

Version 6 will set the immediate family but to get relationships
farther out, you do need to recalculate.

It seems to me that it automatically sets husband, wife, and
children and siblings and anything going up the direct line. Beyond
that I think I need to recalculate.

Re: [LegacyUG] Norwegian Names and Locations

2008-09-24 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
Since I have family in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, I have had to fight
with patronymics. In Norway birth records are written Name Kristoffer (note no
surname), parents Nils Olsen and Gunhild Kristoffersdotter, farm they are
living on Selbekk. In the bygdeboks the names are given using Kristoffer Nilsen
Selbekk, until he moved to a new farm, then the book calls him Kristoffer
Nilsen Ølstøren. Because of this naming system, on the first name I include
Kristoffer Nilsen and Surname Selbekk (farm born on). I put alternate farm
names in the AKA (Ølstøren). The women use the same system, taking the farm
name. In the other countries, they don't use the farm names as surnames as
often.
By the online reference, do you mean the transcripts of the census records, or
the LDS transcripts of the BMD on the IGI. These are helpful. I found that the
IGI on microfiche were useful (bought before my first computer) but with no
surname in the baptism records, the IGI was hard to search.
Good luck.

Jim,

You may not wish to do this, but since a tombstone is a source that is where I
attach them, rather than creating an Event.

You can use the Sentence overide to put what you wish in your nw Burial Event -
see the Help Files.

2008-09-24 Thread Marilyn Potthast
No that isn't what I am talking about. I have the name Green Ridge Cemetery
by the person who died and everytime I get out of that particular person it
says the cemetery does not exist. This cemetery is very large in downtown
Kenosha, WI. It should be in your program. What you told me did not make
any sense to me. I have gone into the name and put in decendent. Then I
don't know where to go from there.

Ron,

For some reason Legacy does not have the cemetery in Kenosha, WI. When I
put in the name and where they are buried it keeps telling me that there is
no such cemetery. The name of the cemetery is Green Ridge and it is in
downtown Kenosha, WI. It should be fixed in your program.

And I've only just got up so my brain is not yet in gear, but I think the
answer to your question is "yes", at least to some extent.

I think the default sentence for the description field is "at [Desc]". Take
the Residence Event as an example, it reads "[He/She] at [Desc]". Without
changing the default, only the contents of the Description field, it can be
made to read eg. "He resided at 'birth' ", "He resided at 'birth in London
Hospital' ", He resided at 'census' ", where the bit in single quotes is
what is included in the description field. These are not particularly good
examples but, I think, make the point.

If this is not what you meant please come back to us.

I've had a long day and perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but you CAN
design the sentence to read differently if the description field is filled
than when it isn't.

2008-09-24 Thread Toni Allen
Jim,
I made up a new event called Cemetery Headstone and attached the photo of
the cemetery headstone to the event.
With a new event, it will print what ever you want it to print.
Just make sure that the report options have the print event photos checked
Off ...
I get a picture of the person at the beginning of his section and the photo
of the headstone next to the event.

Re: [LegacyUG] Events/Facts on Pedigree Web Pages

2008-09-24 Thread Art Seddon
Ron,

Since both my parent's lines go back to England, Ive found Google to be a
great help there also. And I do not limit myself on how many different
segments of the location entry are used. If I ever have use for nine, I'll
use nine!

That was my reaction as well - in fact, although I'm on a different

It is this that makes me think I am missing the point which Marilyn is

Sherry,

Thanks for the response, but I am aware of Win4Lin and VMWare. However,
my point is that I am moving away from Windows and with Win4Lin and
VMWare, I still have to install Windows on my computer. So it sort of
defeats the purpose of going to Linux to get away from Windows. I'll
just keep trying to get Wine to work since Legacy is the only program
keeping me from doing away with Windows.

Thanks for your help,

Re: [LegacyUG] Focus Groups

2008-09-24 Thread Ron Taylor
Focus groups are very powerful for various purposes.  Keep in mind that a focus
group does not consist of a set of records in the database but instead is a
list of criteria that can be used to select records dynamically from the
database.

You can "save" up to 9 focus groups and "load" them for use when needed.
Because I keep all my info in one database, using focus groups makes it easy to
extract certain parts for collaboration with a given relative while another
focus might be used to quickly find those who need to be worked on in some
way.  I might even export a focus group to a new Legacy database so it can be
used separately from the main file and then later it can be re-merged with
intellishare.

The miscellaneous search has a convenient way to find everyone in a focus group
and then you could "tag" them or work with them, etc.

One minor problem with the focus group is the ability to include individuals in
the current search results list.  This criteria works well as long as you
realize that the "current search results" change quite frequently and may not
be related to the other criteria in a given focus group.

Happy slicing and dicing of the info.  It is great to use Legacy as it
manipulates a Microsoft Access database and also for those adventurous types
that want to reach even deeper into the data structures when they can't find
what they want in the current programs.

I haven't bothered with the 4 field convention since my baby days, after which
I realised, as you have, that it aint no good over here, and in a lot of
Europe. I haven't managed to use all 9 fields yet but. :-).

Well, if you have Green Ridge Cemetery where Legacy thinks the county should
be, I'll bet dollars to donuts it will tell you it doesn't exist. That's

Works just as well adding the county, which makes it:
Green Ridge Cemetery, 6604 7th Ave, Kenosha, Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA
4 commas don't hurt a thing.

If one creates a location entry of:
Green Ridge Cemetery, 6604 7th Ave, Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA
Virtual Earth went directly to the cemetery at:
Lat 423416.294 N, 0874913.859 W
I did not have to enter the Lat and Long numbers, the program found it
instantly.
I found the address by Google

I think the default sentence for the description field is
"at [Desc]". Take
the Residence Event as an example, it reads "[He/She]

changing the default, only the contents of the Description
field, it can be
made to read eg. "He resided at 'birth'

what is included in the description field. These are not
particularly good
examples but, I think, make the point.

Re: [LegacyUG] combining addresses

2008-09-24 Thread Terri Brown
Elsie,

I played a little bit. Let's see if I am on the same page as you.

I went to Locations, highlighted (clicked on) one, clicked Combine, then used
the arrow keys to navigate up and down the list. No additional clicking
necessary until you get to the entry to Combine With. Hitting the enter key
will also finish the Combine function.

Next I went to View/Master Lists/Address Lists/Events (or Mailing or
Repository). I highlight (click on) an entry, then clicked on Combine the
highlighted event address with another on in the list. At this point the arrow
keys will not move the cursor up or down. However, when I click on the list
***again*** the arrow keys now move the cursor up and down so I can navigate to
the appropriate entry and click on Highlight the Destination or hit the enter
key.

Are you clicking on the address list a ***second time***? That was the only way
I could get my arrow keys to work in the address lists. If you are not, try it
and see if the arrow keys then work. If you are, then there is something
different with your keyboard or computer or something. I don't believe there is
any setting in Legacy to control how the arrow keys work in the various lists.

I never noticed the different behavior until I started playing around after
your post. Possibly another little bug.

Terri

I tried, Terry but my arrow keys don't work for the address list, only
the location list. Perhaps I have something set wrong.

Elsie,

Click on a line in the address list then use your arrow keys to
navigate. I know it sounds silly but that is what I had to do.

Subject: [LegacyUG] combining addresses

Here i am with another question. Hope I'm not being a pain.

When I'm working on my Location list, merging doubles, I can click on
a location, click on Combine With, use the down arrow, and click on
the one I want to combine the first one to. However, when I try to do
this with the address list, I can't use the down arrow. Am I correct
with this?

Elsie

According to AnyWho online telephone directory,
Google search,
Microsoft Virtual Earth, which Legacy uses for mapping locations
and also the Microsoft Streets and Trips mapping program the name is
"Green Ridge Cemetery".
AnyWho and Google shows the address as
6604 7th Ave, Kenosha, Wisconsin phone (262) 652-1738

Actually, I believe Greenridge is correct. I posted that several days ago.
Legacy doesn't actually know the name of every cemetery in the country, does
it? I'm not sure this is pertinent to Marilyn's problem.

RE: [LegacyUG] Events/Facts on Pedigree Web Pages

2008-09-24 Thread Marilyn Potthast
The cemetery is Green Ridge two separate words. I realize that legacy does
not have every cemetery but this is a big one and all of my ancestors this
problem does not occur and those cemeteries are very small. Doesn't make
sense.
