[LegacyUG] Need help: duplicated parents!

2009-06-20 Thread Paula Ryburn

I have got myself into a pickle.

I was adding two generations onto my husband's paternal line, when really I
needed to be adding three. Because the name James is used so many times, I
messed up.

Okay, I cannot tell you exactly what I did, but I discovered I had left out a
generation. So, I unlinked the (previously) oldest ancestor from the
newly-entered parents & siblings. Then I entered in the missing father, except
that he needed to be part of that list of siblings, so when I added HIS father
& mother I clickec on "link to existing" to get him inserted.

Well, NOW I have two sets of identically named parents for those siblings. One
set are the parents of the James I forgot to enter, and the other set are the
parents of the rest of his siblings. They show up as "(1/2)" with their
mother's name and everything!

Is there some "combine duplicates" thing I could run? Or should I just delete
and start entering again?

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Questionnaires

2009-06-20 Thread Paula Ryburn

Just today I was pondering a similar question. I have been using sources that
I title "Personal Knowledge - ", because they really are the
source of the information. In the detail citation I had been putting things
like "email dated..." or "interview " or "phone call ".
This way, the source that prints is the person's name (these are exclusively
close relatives of mine or my husband's).

I had been defaulting to have the detail citation print; however, today I
decided to NOT check that box on this type of source. On reports it will just
show the name of the person who gave me the information. If I really need to
know when & where, I can look it up in the database.

All my "Personal Knowledge" sources are Basic, but I'm pretty sure you could do
it in SW, too.

After reading some comments here, I have been taking a second look at how far
my detail-oriented self has taken me in this sourcing exercise! And I've
decided to simplify my approach, knowing that my database is mainly for me and
my descendents.. not publication.

Hope this helps.

All Ron can suggest is that I delete the files and create new ones!

Re: [LegacyUG] Saved searches

2009-06-20 Thread Dennis M . Kowallek
I am replying to Ron because the OP did not post in plain text per the
LUG guidelines...

If you look at line 38 of the .sc0 file you will see a number. This
number apparently corresponds to the index of the selected item in the
"Where to look" combo box. Because several new items were inserted near
the top of the combo box for V7, the number in the V6 .sc0 file points
to the incorrect item when used in V7.

Probably not a "bug", just poor design. It should be reported to support
for them to consider fixing before more items get added to the combo box
in a future release. In the short term, I think you are stuck rebuilding
your saved searches. Keep in mind that these saved searches could get
broken again the next time Millennia inserts a new item in the combo box
unless they do something to fix the underlying cause.
