Ron,
Good point! ;) I'm just worried I might be missing something wonderful because
my experience or viewpoint is too narrow.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to Represent a "Best Fit" Ancestor

2009-07-07 Thread Paula Ryburn

How neat to have this thread crop up today! We are in a similar situation with
my husband's link back from Pennsylvania 1750's to Campbeltown, Scotland (also
a very small place). We can get to James b. 1753 in PA, plus two other men
there aged to be this man's uncles, and we have C'town birth records that list
siblings that include the the two men's names plus a James (which is a name
used down through the family line here). Okay, so that may not yet be to what
you would call a "great fit" but it is the "best" we have right now. Ryburn is
not very common, and it seems almost all of them came from/through Campbeltown.
At any rate, we are going with this hypothesis as we travel over there to
visit C'town this summer!
And I am glad to read about the various ways I could better record this link in
my database. THANKS!

I have a similar situation on my paternal grandfather's line.  He was,
according to family story, sent to an orphanage by his father after his
mother died in childbirth.  I have found a family of children admitted to an
orphanage in the right time frame, with siblings with same names etc.
admitted by their father after mother died.  I will probably never prove
that this is the correct family, but I have included them as "best fit" with
a note  for both the father and mother to say that they have not been proved
to be the parents of "my" (proven) John Joseph, but that they are definitely
the parents of the children admitted to the orphanage  This note prints in
all reports so there is no confusion.

How would you represent a "Best Fit" set of parents? This concerns a direct
ancestor from a small island in Scotland (Islay). The available records have
gaps such that his parents will likely never be known; but there is one
family that stands out as a "best fit" in terms of locations, dates, names,
etc. I want to include this next generation of parents (and include research
into their other children's descent) but make it clear that this is only a
best guess. (In particular, this assumes my ancestor was born on Islay and
did not come to Islay from somewhere else.)

Do you use the Children's Settings for this and add a new setting such as
"Tentative"? This is not quite right - I want to represent that these
parent's son Donald (who is not tentative) is the best fit for "my" Donald.

[LegacyUG] Linking files in Picture Gallery

2009-07-07 Thread Ron And June Weeks
Hi,
I have created many links to census pages in the picture gallery using 'files'.
When clicking on these links, it displays the information in Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer, so far, so good. What I then did was to run msconfig to find
out why my computer was taking so long to boot up. I disabled all the startup
items that I thought was unnecessary for what I needed.
Then going back into Legacy, I found the link to my census pages were disabled,
so I re-enabled all the start-up items.
I still cannot view the census pages!!
Can knowledgeable person advise me so I can couple them back up? Please.
