[LegacyUG] Omitting general & research notes

2009-07-31 Thread Kathy Westlake
I would like to export a Legacy file for another researcher, but I don't
want to include my general and research notes. I can't seem to find in the
HELP how to exclude them. Anyone help please?

Have a good day,

Re: [LegacyUG] Omitting general & research notes

2009-07-31 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

The easiest (and most time consuming) is to place [[ ]] around the parts not to
be sent. An alternate choice is to gedcom the data to yourself (new name), and
remove the stuff you won't send, then take and send the 'second' gedcom. Then
you KNOW nothing extra went out.

[LegacyUG] Step Children Plus a Printing Question

2009-07-31 Thread SgtBob
I have a couple of questions on which I need some help:
(1) I adopted my step-daughter and would like to show her as such in my family.
How do I do that? I only seem to be able to add her as my daughter but I
would like for her to show as the daughter of her biological Father for the
genealogy line?

(2) How do I save the report output to Open Office? I like some of their
covers, etc.

Tagging is simply marking certain records so that you can easily find
them again. There are 9 tags available and you can use as many tags as
you like for any one person, but only 3 of them will actually appear on
Family View and some other screens.

I mainly use tags to distinguish different lines of my family so any
time I want to work with people who belong to one particular line I just
include that tag in my search criteria.

When you search, you can only select 3 criteria at a time, but if you
select on 3 criteria and then tag everyone in the search result, you can
then search all the tagged people with up to 3 more criteria which makes
for a very powerful search capability.

Re: [LegacyUG] Omitting general & research notes

2009-07-31 Thread TomK
Kathy
You can create your own custom Export List and exclude the sections you
don't want to have in the GEDCOM.On the General Export Option Screen you
will see on the bottom right area a "Customize" button. When you select
Customize, you will come up with the default Items that will be exported.

You can go through the right Column list and select the NOTES item and click
the Remove button between the Items Available and Export these Items
columns. This will remove both the General Notes and Research Notes from
your GEDCOM. You can also remove MNOTE to remove the Medical Notes. If
you have Events with Notes, you can also remove EVENTS from the
Export, etc.

When you have removed all of the items, then you can use the Save List
button to save the Export List with an appropriate name. After you run the
export, you can check the GEDCOM to see if you have removed everything that
you wanted to. If not, then click Customize, Load List selecting your
custom list, make the changes and save again.

I use this all of the time to separate public from private information on my
two websites. What Richard said is true, and I often will use [[ ]] to
mark a section of Notes as private so they don't get exported/printed. And
generally, my entire Research sections are prefaced with [[ so they don't
get exported, or show up on reports.

Note, I also use the Record Selection button on the GEDCOM Export Options
screen to limit the export to a specific list of individuals that I have
Tagged using Advanced Tagging. So if I'm exporting the 'John Smith' family,
I first select the starting individual, and tag all ancestors, and then
export only those tagged individuals (unchecking the appropriate boxes).

Hope that helps.

RE: [LegacyUG] Step Children Plus a Printing Question

2009-07-31 Thread ronald ferguson

Bob,

1) Set yourself as father in Family view with your daughter in the children's
section right click on her name and select Childrens Settings and then adopted
for the relationship. There is no problem with a child having 2 (or more) sets
of parents.

2) You cannot "save" to OpenOffice. You need to save as an RTF and "import"
into OOo. See my tutorial at http://www.fergys.co.uk/Blogs/AncBk.php which
details how to create an Ancestor Report. I'm afraid that I have not done a
video for it yet, but will when I have got rid of hayfever and have a voice
which doesn't sound as if I've got swine flu :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Step Children Plus a Printing Question

2009-07-31 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES

What you need to know is, you can add the same person to multiple combinations
of families and they will show as expected. The problems are that the 1/2
families may LOOK weird on screen, but the prints are a little better. I have
adopted some of parts of 12 siblings, and am in contact with the others (now
adults). I use AKAs and swap which one to use as needed in Family Group Sheets.
Trick question. are you married to that father. (I guessed yes, but!) Do you
want to show/record ever the biological mother?
I know nothing about Open Office, so I stay away from that.

Bob,

Yes, but only on the screens such as Family View the 1/2 will not be shown in
reports, webpages etc.

If you wish you can switch this off by right clicking on the child, slect
"View" and uncheck "show 1/2 kids". Personally I prefer to have it set, but it
is a matter of personal choice.

RE: [LegacyUG] Step Children Plus a Printing Question

2009-07-31 Thread CE Wood
If you enter her as a child of you and your wife, she will not have the 1/2.
If you also enter her as a child of your wife and her father, she will be
listed both as 1/2 and regular under each family.

You can enter her as a child of you and your wife. Then right click the
list of children, and click on "Children's Settings..." Highlight her name
and specify Relationship to Father: Adopted, and Relationship to Mother:
Biological.

You can also enter her as a child of your wife and her father. In
Children's Settings, specify Biological and Biological, respectively.

She now shows up twice under each family, once as 1/2 and once as regular.

Hope this is clear.

RE: [LegacyUG] Names in Notes: Index them?

Why not create an 'unlinked individual' ?
Cross reference them to the person concerned in that individuals general
notes. (E.g. A witness to a wedding that is not family). Then you will have
the individual in the file always.
You never know, you might find a relationship later on!!

Possibly this has been 'addressed' before, if so, sorry too repeat it.

I find the Event Address list very difficult to use.
If I just put in the address without a name Legacy adds 'n/a ' to the name
and I have dozens of addresses listed as n/a When I look at the list as to
who is using it, the people are there but I cannot seem to find where the
actual address is listed. The house is greyed out in all the different views
and events I can see

If I add a name to the address I need to add variations to all concerning
every individual since, e.g., there might be 6 or more addresses from the
census' for the same person. (JoeBloggs1841, JoeBloggs1851 etc) This looks
very scrappy and unprofessional (double box brackets stops the name being
seen in reports, but it still doesn't look very good in the address list and
cannot be sorted since all the sorting is done via the first bracket.) Is
there a way to clean up the list so it has meaning and yet looks
