[LegacyUG] OOo Base

2007-01-06 Thread Art Sedddon
Ron,
I downloaded OO and installed Base, but I haven't figured out how to open my
.fdb file. When I tell it I want to open an Access file it does not give access
to any files in the folder where I made a copy of my Legacy *.fdb Do I need to
change the extension, or what?

Thanks

Art,

I don't know if you are aware but the lastest edition of Open Office will open
Access files (including Legacy's .fdb).
I would not, however, recommend amending them and over writing the original -
or at least be very very careful as OOo Base is not entirely bug free.

Hence, in my view, is only suitable for having a look at the file.

Just went to Legacy, clicked Legacy Home, clicked check for updates and got the
instant response that I had the latest build. It also gave a couple of links
under Legacy News, which worked.

No problem.

[LegacyUG] SINGLE NAMES

2006-12-30 Thread Art Sedddon
Hi Listers;

What is the accepted way of entering the name of an individual who oly has one
name? I do not mean that the given name is unknown, but that he has only one
name. I am speaking not only of historical characters such as Moses, but
contemporary people with only one name, such as a businessman in Arizona whose
only name is Nelson. That is what is on his business card and how he
introduces his self.

Art, Have you considered uninstalling Easy CD and DVD Creator deleting all
it's files and then trying Legacy? If all is well you could then reinstall
Easy CD and DVD Creator. Although it's not unknown for a program to
commandeer a Windows dll for its own use I fail to see why this should
suddenly happen when both programs have been installed for a long time so
I doubt if that is the case here.

I figured out the problem (which may or may not be a bug. I think it is).

When you open the Name List, if the tab that is open is any of the tabs
except Edit or Notes the cursor does default correctly to the Given or
Surname fields. BUT, if you last used the Name List screen's Notes or
Edit tabs, then when you later reopen the Name List to search for a
person, that is the tab that opens and the cursor then defaults not to the
name fields but to the Notes or Edit fields.

I can see the logic behind that behavior but it can be annoying when you
are opening a Name List for the purpose of searching for a person. In my
case I just could not see why that new behavior was happening without
testing it in a variety of ways.

Are you sure you are talking about the names list. The cursor in my
Legacy defaults to the surname field not Notes, in fact there is no Notes
in the header boxes. I used the Options Customize Display and that only
affects fields in the display tab for the current individual. I could
find no way to have a Notes field in the header boxes on the Name List.

[LegacyUG] Sorting by date of birth

2006-10-30 Thread Art Sedddon

Hi;
Is there any way to tag a group in the name list, do a search of that tag
number and then sort by date of birth?

To me that would be much more useful than sorting by RIN, most of which, at
least in my file, are random numbers, since there is no way to assign them
automaticaly to follow a family group or any other logical system, except
manually, one by one.

Hi Art,
Did you click on Refresh in the Tree Finder?
The Tree Finder doesn't refresh automatically.

If you want the Tree Finder to show the tree as yours you have to make
yourself RIN = 1. You do this with Tools Renumber RINs.

First give the current RIN=1 a different unused RIN

It's nothing to do with setting Direct Line or setting relationships etc

I was wondering if there were suggestions on how to handle potential
relatives within Legacy. By this I mean individuals who might be related
but for which there has not yet been a connection made. Entering them just
as unlinked individuals would cause them to be lost within the database. I
suppose tagging would be a useful way to track them, as would entering them
in a separate database file, but how do others handle this in Legacy?

can set any email address in my address book to send in plain text only, so
I don't have to remember to do so. I choose to not use this, though would
if my memory were not up to the task (most emails I send out each day are to
lists that need to be posted to in plain text). Instead, I compose in HTML
mode because the spelling checker works properly in that mode (but not in
plain text, for some obscure reason) and when I'm satisfied with the post
change the format to plain text just before sending; this gives me the added
benefit of being able to review the appearance of the post before it's
sent, in case something hasn't turned out as I expected. It's not often I
forget that last step of changing the format to plain text. ;-)

Which just goes to show I'm not too old to learn! It just took me about
three minutes to go through all my e-list addresses and click the plain text
box.

Go to the address book, right click on the address, click properties, click
on name and in the lower right hand corner their is a box marked Plain
text. Click it and we should be off and running. If this e:mail is received
in plain test it works, I'm composing in HTML.

Re: [LegacyUG] import RTF

Why not select the text (hi-light it) copy and paste. That's how I handle
text whether it from e:mail, word processor, pdf, web page or whatever.

I want to import an RTF file into my Legacy database instead of having to
type it all in one piece of data at a time.

Dennis, What exactly are you trying to do? I ask because this information
may enable one of us to come up with a solution.

Is there a way to import an RTF file into Legacy?
